Nintendo getting downloadable films. Paying for SD TV is fun! photo

Why should the Xbox 360 have all the fun with Netflix? Now the Wii is getting its own entertainment channel, with the totally not gay name of Everybody's Wii Theater! Yaaaay! It's for everybody!

Due to launch in Japan from January 27 (so not quote for everybody), this online video rental service will contain around 3,000 titles, including Astro Boy, Transformers, Hajime no Ippo, and Dogtanian. It's mostly anime, with a few movies, educational programs, and drama shows thrown in. The rental options are as follows:

  • A single title for two days: 300 Wii Points
  • Two titles for three days: 600 Wii Points
  • Three titles for five days: 800 Wii Points

The main question of course is: How is Nintendo expecting to deliver the content? With the Wii's tiny hard drive, it's not like it can store much of anything. Are people meant to pay to stream it? On the Wii? Well, it's unlikely to matter to us anyway. I doubt "everybody" will get a chance to experience Everybody's Wii Theater, as there's no talk of it ever coming across to the West.

Probably a good thing too, since the promise of paid film content that's being hyped as "close" to DVD quality would quite rightly get laughed at by most people who know better.

Brulesrules: What?

I think this is stupid. I'm not paying $3 to rent a sub-DVD quality movie for 3 days. I'm glad the Wii isn't popular in North America.

God I hate Nintendo now. Storage issues are still a major problem for the Wii and they try and compete with the Microsoft / Sony video services? *facepalm*

As mentally retarded as the concept is, watching Astro Boy or Ippo on my Wii sounds almost kinda cool.

If I had a high speed internet connection. In Japan.

THIS is what these fucking cunts are wasting time with instead of putting out real fucking firmware updates that benefit the console.

Fucking stupid pricks are lucky No More Heroes 2 was announced.

not actually such a bad idea, if renting means opening a stream channel for however many days. BBC iPlayer works great on the Wii and is actually how I watch most of their shows (i have very poor reception in my area). It's just a pity it seems to be mostly kiddie anime, but then again if you;re going to buy a wii, what do you expect...

Considering Nintendo's inability to handle low-quality streaming video in the Nintendo channel, I somehow find myself feeling concerned about the quality of this experience. And the pricing blows.

First of all Nintendo's not doing this, its Fugi Soft, and second if Jim ever checked a fact he might of not been so mocking about this, considering Fugi Soft also wants to do this service on the 360, PS3, and Cell phones in Japan. My god Jim, you can take any piece of news related to Nintendo, and put a negative slant on it, can't you? Cheer the fuck up its almost Christmas.

Oh, and by the way Merry Christmas Jim!

@PEICanada7

The FugiSoft aspect wasn't mentioned, but I don't think there was a part in the article where Nintendo were directly referenced as the company doing putting this up. But the facts Jim mentioned stay the same: the Wii is getting a video service in Japan, the pricing is absolutely insane! and the console still has hardware issues that will pretty much hinder this new channel from doing what it want's to properly.

Plus, news is more entertaining when its negative! :)

Merry christmas!

What's not to mock? The service is a joke.

It can stream just fine considering Japan's average broadband speed is at 100Mbps. If they hardwired their Wii connection, it would stream perfectly. It would just look like shit because its SD.
