Nintendo France: Last Story is not NOT coming to the West photo

When Nintendo of America said it had "no plans" to localize The Last Story, everybody got depressed and decided it was never happening. I remained more hopeful, and it seems that I'm not alone, with Nintendo France clarifying that "no plans" doesn't mean "not happening."

"Unfortunately, the vocabulary used by this announcement was misconstrued by the British journalists: “No plans at the moment” does not mean that the output is canceled, just that it is not yet scheduled in the calendar," says a Nintendo France rep. "The adaptation of this game could be very long (12,000 dialogues, a record!) and our translation teams are overstretched in the short term."

Nintendo and Mistwalker alike are playing coy, but I am still confident we will see this game in the West, next year if not this year. Otherwise I'll cut myself.

Yet you know someone, somewhere, is going to release a complete text translation patch.

And when that day comes, I will import The Last Story.

I'm tired of the uncertainty, I'm just going to forget about the game until if and when a western release is announced.

Yeah, hopefully someone will translate the game, but I don't know, I'm still waiting for that Captain Rainbow fan translation...

Sounds like it's a done deal. There wouldn't be so much hemming and hawing if there wasn't a plan in place; they probably want to wait until the game is done and the 3DS' initial rush is done to schedule the work.

that's alot O_O

but still with nintendo making money with the Wii and DS(soon to be 3DS) i still can't see why they can't localize this, Xenoblade, Fatal Frame 4, and Earth Seeker.

if they can localize games like nintendogs, i don't see why this game can't

hell even Tatsunoko made it here(you do not know how hard it is to localize this game due to multiple licenses from different companies, not to mention not everyone is familiar with the cast so it's still a gamble. and all without the help of nintendo)

It will come, we just have to wait til E3 to hear anything, most likely.

Probably that and Skyward Sword as well. And what all else Nintendo has up their sleeves.

If they think it isnt worth localising for the US there never was any chance of us in Europe getting it considering all the different languages theyld have to localise for here.

Its a shame the video game industry doesnt abandon US, Europe, Auz and Japan regoining, into grouping countries together based on their main languages. It would put English speaking countries into a massive block making sure that we have a better chance of seeing japanese localisations. It would be a boon for us english speakers outside NA who are left out of the cold when it comes to many japanese games.

ahwell enough wishfull thinking

See? NoE has absolutely no idea what it's talking about. They aren't kept in the loop by either NoJ or NoA and have often said contradicting things compared to the other two.

This is coming here.

If it doesn't get an official release we'll need to wait 12 years to get a fan translation with subtitles and 20 for one with voice acting. However I think it will get an American release only if it sells 1.5 million or higher in Japan. Also can't they just hire another translation team to translate the game if their team is too busy?

They're right. It's not coming to the West.
In the same way they have no plans to release it in the West.

Their representatives have to be very careful not to release anything that would let the cat out of the bag or it's their heads that roll.
They're probably not lying flat out, but they're not letting things out that would raise hopes and create a huge expectation.

They very likely intend to release this in the West, but why commit, the games not even finished in Japanese and who knows? It might be terrible and bomb.

Let them finish the game first.

Basically, it's not up to John Smith or Jacques Smíthé to announce this, or anything like that. It's up to people higher up the food chain, and as such, you're going to get jack shit to pass their lips.

I still think it would be hilarious to release a lot of data in English only to say that the game itself won't be.

Again, not to be the US-centric asshole here, but why not release it in English for now, at least so the entirety of North America (a pretty big continent) can enjoy it, plus the UK? It may not be ideal, but most of Europe knows some level of English (and several other languages) since their education is so much stronger.

US most likely will get its Last Story fix sooner or later. It's Europe that, as usual, should be getting a little worried by now and because of that, I'd first like to address the guilty parties...

Merci, France :(
Gracias, Italia :(
Danke, Deutschland :(
Gracias, España :(

...and add my two cents as a Finn...

On se ny perkele ettei aikuiset ihmiset englantia viitsi sen vertaa opetella, että edes pelaaminen onnistuisi.

Thank you and apologies. Just finding it increasingly irritating that companies still consider a PAL release to be an option only if it sports five languages on one disc. Is English really that evil an option?

That ssems to suggest the Japanese version is completed to me.

They probably need something for E3, so chances are it'll come to the West and they'll announce in at E3, maybe including Xenoblade (unless of course TLS bombs horribly).

At least that's the most plausible hope I can come up with. :D

@TSP

I actually recall the review now you mentioned it. That being said, it's not out in the open and while the game is *gold* and in transit for delivery, I doubt they consider it finished until they know it's working properly and no game killing bugs. Until they can "wash their hands" of it so to speak.

Either way, I doubt they're ready to make a public decision on what's happening on the western front.

Also, a 10/10/8/8 (not 39, it's 4 different reviewers) from Famitsu for a Sakaguchi game doesn't mean alot.

He could vomit in a bag and Famitsu would give it a great score.
They gave Blue Dragon a 9/9/9/8 for a start...

@The Silent Protagonist: IMO Nintendo wants to see sales and public reaction in Japan first, after all Famitsu scored FF13 with a 39/40 right? and we all saw how it didn't matter when sales crumbled to the point it was selling for 500 (more or less 4$ i think) Yen last time i checked.

That said, i want this game more than i want Skyward Sword, yes i actually said that.

Lost Odyssey is already a perfect example of what a good JRPG this gen would look and play like. I hope The Last Story accompanies LO in that example.

What a silly industry this is.

Popular demand? Blehh. We don't have the resources being the #1 company in the business collaborating with one of the most beloved creators in the business and whatnot. Leave us alone!

What a shame.

Yeah, Blue Dragon was actually really good. Fantastic soundtrack, fun characters and the stories you went through were honestly either heartwarming or almost creepy at times. The tree that keeps the village captive by eating people? The whole robot village and the question of whether a robot could develop a heart and soul and understand friendship? It had undertones that a lot of people overlooked due to just how shallow they are.

Jim that's an awful bet to take as when Nintendo says no they tend to really mean it. I mean look at Namco and how their not localising games much. Or the fact that Sin and Punishment 2 kinda flopped there. Bringing non-HD Japanese IPs is risky business.
