Nintendo finally does the smart thing: Improving release dates outside Japan

Nintendo finally does the smart thing: Improving release dates outside Japan photo
     Nintendo

I've made no secret of my bitter distaste when it comes to the ridiculous, insulting and totally unnecessary release dates that we have to put up with from Nintendo in Europe. Having to wait over six months for Super Paper Mario was little more than a slap in the face, and a company that claims to be serious about its online market simply can't pull such rotten stunts with today's global gaming audience.

Finally, however, it seems that the Big N is finally seeing the light and realizing that gamers outside of Japan are increasingly growing frustrated with their shoddy treatment. After complaints forwarded by equally downtrodden Australian gamers, the legendary corporation went ahead and promised that it was working on releasing games in other territories no more than two weeks after the Japanese street date. Now that's more like it, Nintendo!

"Our fans are very passionate and want games straight away," Nintendo stated. "We are working on that as a priority and trying to get [the release schedule] to be more global." That sounds just about dandy to me. Microsoft and Sony can manage less than a week, but I'll let you off if you actually come through on this.

Nintendo has been one of the worst offenders when it comes to screwing other markets over, so this promise of a more global release date is very encouraging. Of course, it was said that Nintendo was going to make the Wii a global launch too, and that never happened. Fingers are crossed, though. The last thing Nintendo needs is to draw heat on The Podcastle, am I right?

I never really understood why they did that. It just makes them look really lazy and pisses people off.

This just means that the Japanese release dates will be pushed back to wait for the games to be translated for other territories.

Now if only they'd do away with Friend Codes and make an online system worth using, they'd be all set.

Nothin' like entering a 16-digit alpha-numeric code just to play online with a friend. That gives me the warm fuzzies.

@Oni,

I would even be okay with the 16 digit code if it was one code per account, instead of having a Wii number and then friend codes on top of that.

Seriously, what the fuck is the point to the Wii number then?

I'm with king3vbo. I'll believe this when I see it.

Don't forget that you can't talk to anyone either, not everyone uses voice chat to call each other fag, some families use it communicate and play a game at the same.

Sounds on paper but I'll believe it when I see it.

Europe has video games?

I've NEVER understood this. What is the purpose of releasing only in one area of the globe anyway? Is it because of the different displays types (NTSC vs PAL) or is it just to be a dick? There are CD/DVD manufacturing plants all over. It's ridiculous that any software had to be delayed to various regions of the world. All that it does is encourage modding/importing.

Mario looks so peeved in that pic, especially with the caption.

Yeah, maybe aside from localization issues, I don't get why the release dates can't be closer together.

So instead of a year we will have to wait 11 months....oh JOY!!!!!

When the WII starts releasing things with in no more than a month between American and European then we can talk and then i will only be slightly miffed.

I'll believe this when I see it, Nintendo has never treated Europe with anything but disdain. Seeing as you're allegedly sorting things out though boys how 'bout giving us non gimped versions of virtual console games while you are at it. I love Mario Bros 3 but I want to cry every time I play that fucking mess of the game that you put up on the VC. It's like watching your beautiful girlfriend smear make up all over her face and making herself look like a 20 quid hooker.

Please note: I have only a hypothetical beautiful girlfriend.

In other completely unrelated news, nintendo notices japanese people aren't buying console games anymore. Let's hope they're not just bullshitting us, but to protect my fragile hopes and dreams, I'm going to assume they are.
