Max settings 3hrs. Low/average 5-6hrs. DS games up to 8. Pretty damn good for me. Up to 3.5 hours is a completely drained and dead battery. Not just something on low or that just died.
Ehhhhh. What about if 3D is turned off? He says 3D requires a lot energy, but I don't see him mentioning how much longer the battery is with 3D turned off.

This changes nothing for me. The whole reason I'm holding off is because of the size of the thing. I can't go back to using something that small after having my dsi xl.

@eskimo bob - pretty much what a lot of rational people were saying. People still want to look at it as a weaker thing, though, so it should use less battery life even though its running so much more than past devices have. Both this and PSP2 are pretty much beasts.
I hope 3th party battery's with a higher capacity will be released for the 3ds otherwise I would need a portable power source
Thank the gaming Gods that at least one portable system the 3DS will have a decent battery life of 3-5 hours. Not like Sony's new pile of junk. It's only expected to have a battery life of just 3-5 hours. What a piece of Sofik.

Y'alls just spoiled on the better battery life afforded by improvements on a technology that's more than six years old.
The good news is it's inevitable that another model of the 3DS, with improved battery life, will be released.

@Lenigod lol read his post a couple comments up. He just inventing new ways to shit on sony. Here someof what he said: so about 3.5 hours with full volume up and power save feature and +8 hours with 3D turned off. He then goes on to praise it over the NGP. I think both battery lifes are average to be honest.

The 3DS is taking tons of criticism for this terrible battery life, I have no idea what you guys are flapping about. Also, if the NGP has comparable battery life, then that is bad too, not because people are prejudiced against Sony but because then both devices would have crap battery life. Sony earned their reputation with the PSP just as Nintendo's changing theirs with the 3DS.

While this is anoying it's been a while since I have been on a really long car trip so the only problem will be remembering to put it in the charger when I'm not using it.

5 hours on the lowest brightness setting? Fuck, it looks like I need to get a third party battery with it.
Disappointing, but then again, I know I can always pick up a launch 3DS and just eBay it for a few bucks less when the newer, better models hit, so it's not really much of a financial risk.
With the battery life as it is, I might wait until the upgraded version, assuming DS games continue to come out enough to support my interest.
I'm actually more okay with this now from when I first heard about it. I don't think there would be many times where I'd be playing the system away from a charger for more than the battery life allows anyways.

The only time this will actually be a problem for anyone is for anyone who does annual/semi-annual/frequent 5 Hour plus flights and doesn't have the money to (somehow despite the freakish cost of airflights) to purchase an external charger.

Five hours isn't actually that bad. Think of it this way: Are you really going to be outside of your house, playing a 3DS for more than five hours? For the most part, the only time you'll actually be playing your 3DS outside of your house is on the bus (or some other public transit.)
You'll just need to form a habit of recharging your 3DS every day before you go to school/work.
