NIntendo DSi and DSi XL prices dropping next month photo

Gaming on Nintendo's portable systems is about to get cheaper. Starting on September 12, the Nintendo DSi will now cost $149.99, with the larger Nintendo DSi XL dropping to $169.99. The "why is this thing still available?" model, the Nintendo DS Lite, will cost $129.99.

Along with the press release announcing the price drops, Nintendo's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing Cammie Dunaway is quoted as saying something about shoppers wanting "to get the maximum value out of every dollar they spend." Translated, this basically means "With the Nintendo 3DS out early next year, we're really worried it's going to put people off from purchasing new handhelds this holiday." Smart.

Nintendo also reaffirmed its first-party DS line-up for the coming months: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future on September 12; Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs on October 4; Art Academy on October 25; Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!; and Golden Sun: Dark Dawn on November 29.

Does now seem like a good time to pick up that Nintendo handheld you've been holding out on, or will you just wait for the Nintendo 3DS?

I was personally expecting a $99 DS Lite, but whatever.

As it is, I imagine that this will not be the DS's best holiday, between the mediocre list of upcoming titles and the anticipation for the 3DS. Ironically, it will probably become the best selling game system of all time around this period.

I'm actually buying two of these next month (DSi XL) for birthday gifts! Score, now I can save a couple bucks.

No thanks. I'll wait for the 3DS, the first handheld platform I purchase in the last 5-6 years.

Wake me up when the 3DS's inevitable revision drives down prices of the first model.

"The "why is this thing still available?" model, the Nintendo DS Lite"

I'd rather buy a DS Lite than a DSi. A GBA Slot is more useful to me than a crap camera and digital downloads. That being said, I've been perfectly happy with my DS Phat since it came out.

Wait. I was thinking about picking up an XL when it was announced but then they announced the 3DS.

Booo. My hinge just went and I was hoping to pick up a new one a little cheaper. I have no need for anything new and fancy just yet.

Crock: just the hinge? because you can buy replacement cases on ebay or other seedy places.

Already have a DS Lite and a DSi. I'm waiting until the 3DS arrives, of course but these prices look so attractive

I wish they would drop the DS Lite price a little more.

I'd rather have a GBA slot than a worthless camera.

They better lower the price with the 3ds coming out. I almost feel sad for people who bought a dsi before 3ds was announced. Did those cameras really make it worth it.

The DS Lite will cost $129.99? Hasn't it ALWAYS been priced $129.99??? That's the one I'm trying to buy after all these years.

I already have a trusty Lite and for everything else i'll wait for the 3DS, speaking of which there's rumors of a 300$ price tag, a bit steep if you ask me.

This is actually pretty good news! This means they are bringing the 3DS in line to be priced at the most expensive of them all at... $199! Woot!

Also, GBA? Really? I think the last time I played a GBA game was in 2006. Evolve or die(tm)

"The "why is this thing still available?" model..."

It's available so you can actually play your old games. And Pokemon on the DS. And Guitar Hero on the DS. And everything that the DSs after it should have been.

Of course I literally bought a DSi XL a few days ago, but still not regrets. Really enjoying it.

BTW, if I wanna play GBA games I've still got my SP in a drawer or I can just use my DS Lite. Though I guess I understand how some people would prefer an all-in-one solution so they can pawn off old hardware.

I WAS going to get the DSiXL, but when 3DS was rumored, I held off.

GBA compatibility is why. 80 million custmers is not something to ignore with that.
