Nintendo DLC Update: Star Wars, Contra, and stuff photo

It’s yet another thrilling week on the Nintendo Downloads front, people.

Look forward to going backward again this afternoon as Super Return of the Jedi hits Virtual Console. Priced at 800 Wii Pretend Bones, this downloadable is sure to impress even the nastiest Ninja Gaiden players with its ridiculous difficulty and off-screen-attacking action. Prepare to Jedi up and cry yourself to sleep.

Konami’s Contra Rebirth and Exkee’s ColorZ are the two games hitting the WiiWare platform for the week. Rebirth -- priced at 1,000 Wii Points -- is a 16-bit Contra title that features the same kind of side-scrolling action that the previous twelve releases have. There’s no sense in fixing something that isn’t broken, eh? ColorZ, on the other hand, is a different title. Players control a space ship that can absorb colors. (Feel free to hit the break to read the full explanation of this thing.)

Clubhouse Games: Express: Family Favorites is the DSiWare title this week. It’s a conglomeration game that offers several classic card games -- Hearts, Bridge, etc. It is available because people have yet to figure out the Internet.

And that’s it. What the hell are you playing this week?

WiiWare

Contra Rebirth
Publisher: Konami

ESRB Rating: E10+ (Everyone 10 and Older) – Fantasy Violence

The Galactic President calls on Lance Bean, a member of the elite “Contra” warriors, to save the day, but his sudden disappearance jeopardizes the safety of the planet. Now, Bill Rizer and samurai Genbei Yagyu are the last hope for Earth. They must pick up their weapons and defeat the evil Neo-Salamander Army before all is lost. Experience the fast-paced, action-packed, side-scrolling adventure that pioneered the run-and-gun genre.

I know Super Star Wars was pretty nifty, if a bit of a novelty in those days. Not sure how well SROTJ will stand up. One thing it will have, though, is awesome sound effects and music, straight outta the film :)

Super Return of the Jedi! I definitely still have the cartridge for that but man do I have some memories with it. I am definitely interested in picking up Contra but I will wait until I read some more impressions on the title.

Why the hell are these games so expensive. $10 for a 16-bit game? Even asking $8 is too much, ps1 games are usually $5. I know they take time and money to make available, but I still think that isn't the equilibrium price. Nor is it the price I want to pay.

Contra Rebirth is amazingly hard, and has some beautiful sprite work. If you're a retro fan, get it!

@dwolfwood Contra Rebirth is a brand new game for Wiiware that has a 16-bit style.

@dwolfwood

It's not 16-bit because it HAS to be. It's that way as a style choice.

SRotJ was my least favorite of the Super Star Wars trilogy. But I might give Contra a shot.

@ dwolfwood

If you're a fan, its really worth it. There's A LOT of gameplay (approx. 25 hours total) and the story is a compelling and original extension of the core game. I particularly enjoy the method of storytelling. It follows a similar "network narrative" formula found in the films Amorres Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel. Great stuff.
