Nintendo DLC: Animal Crossing apps, penguins, toppled towers photo

Nintendo continues its first-party DSiWare streak this week with two non-games -- Animal Crossing Calculator (1 player, 200 DSi Points) and Animal Crossing Clock (1 player, 200 DSiPoints). As you'd expect, the calculator is just that, complete with a unit converter and the ability to listen to the "Animalese" pronunciation of numbers which will come in handy for absolutely nothing. The clock is a full featured analog or digital clock, complete with an alarm; you know how much we love clock apps here at Destructoid.

WiiWare gets Penguin & Friends - Hey! That's My Fish (Gammick Entertainment, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points), which likely has the "core" gamer perking up its ears at the very name. The title is a puzzle strategy affair in which penguins (that's you!) attempt to catch fish on a gameboard of ice blocks.

Virtual Console gets an 80s classic, Tower Toppler (Commodore 64, 1 player, 500 Wii Points), an underwater platformer. You control a weird little green frog-like creature, taking down towers, which obviously pose a threat to... sealife. Go get 'em.

Do the Math: Animal Apps, Toppling Towers and Hungry Penguins

Fans of the popular Animal Crossing™ series can enjoy a pair of downloadable—and practical—debuts this week via the Nintendo DSiWare™ service. Whether you’re telling time or doing arithmetic, these handy applications will give your daily number-crunching a critter-friendly boost. A new WiiWare™ game also takes a fun peek into the animal kingdom, while the latest Virtual Console™ release sends players underwater for classic Commodore 64 action.

Nintendo DSiWare

Animal Crossing Calculator (Nintendo, 1 player, 200 Nintendo DSi Points™): Need to figure out what you owe Tom Nook or the amount in your savings account? Animal Crossing Calculator features the full functionality of a traditional calculator, including a Memory key and the ability to display up to 13 digits, adding a layer of atmosphere unique to Animal Crossing. Use the Unit Converter to turn one unit of measure into another (such as length, weight, volume and age), or track the history of calculations you’ve performed. Listen to the Animalese pronunciation of numbers when you press them, and watch for a favorite Animal Crossing character to appear when your result meets certain criteria. Get ready for an inventive and practical way to experience the charm of Animal Crossing.

Animal Crossing Clock (Nintendo, 1 player, 200 Nintendo DSi Points): Enjoy the atmosphere of Animal Crossing in a whole new way with Animal Crossing Clock. Select from either an analog or digital clock and set up to three alarms (with snooze functionality for those who need it). Make your own Town Tune or use sounds created in Nintendo DSi™ Sound, then assign them to the alarms you’ve set. Use the system’s internal clock or offset the time however you like. Then sit back and watch as different characters from Animal Crossing appear and the color of the sky changes as time passes. You’ll never miss an important appointment with one of your Animal Crossing friends again.

WiiWare

Penguins & Friends – Hey! That’s My Fish! (Gammick Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points™): The penguins are hungry and need your help. Catch all the fish you can before someone steals them from you. Strategy is fundamental in this exciting game. Keep moving ahead of the other penguins so you don’t get trapped, and try to get to the ice floes that hold more fish. One to four players can play Penguins & Friends at the same time, provided they can handle the polar cold. The board is made up of ice blocks with a set number of fish under them. The ice blocks are hexagonal and form a structure like a beehive. The starting position of the ice blocks can change, creating different game boards.

Virtual Console

Tower Toppler™ (Commodore 64, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Weird things are happening on Planet Nebulus. Someone or something has begun building huge towers on the sea floor without a construction license. Your mission is to ascend each of the eight cylindrical towers, passing various obstacles along the way, and to trigger the tower’s destruction mechanism to demolish the evil threat. Praised upon its original 1987 release for its graphical innovation, this is considered to be the most outstanding game from Hewson. Don’t miss out on this classic favorite.

Nintendo adds new titles to the Nintendo DSi Shop and the Wii™ Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Mondays. Users with broadband Internet access can redeem Wii Points or Nintendo DSi Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel. Nintendo DSi Points can be purchased in the Nintendo DSi Shop. A Nintendo Points Card™ can be purchased at retail locations. All points from one Nintendo Points Card must be redeemed in either the Nintendo DSi Shop or the Wii Shop Channel. They are not transferable and cannot be divided between the two systems.

Remember that both Wii and Nintendo DSi feature parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit Wii.com or NintendoDSi.com.

The list of downloadable games is updated weekly on Nintendo’s Online Press Room at press.nintendo.com. For more information, please contact:

Alright, c'mon. How can there be people out there that still say Nintendo hasn't turned its back on its long-time supporters? Did any of them buy the DSi for a calculator and clock app? Or their Wii for a game about penguins?

My Wii is collecting dust. I can't remember the last time I bought anything off of the WiiWare service...maybe it was the second Strong Bad game.

My DS Lite is anxiously awaiting the arrival of Super Robot Taisen in the mail, followed by Steal Princess, Devil Survivor, and Knights in the Nightmare...none of them published by Nintendo.

Maybe when the "casual" gamers abandon Nintendo, they'll finally refocus their aim on the rest of us. Unfortunately, we'll all be too busy playing our PS3's and 360's...

Oh, I'm sure Nintendo will throw us a bone at E3 by announcing a single new IP. Probably Pikmin.

I liked Pikmin, but it's not all that great compared to the likes of Zelda, Mario, or Metroid.

I think if Nintendo wanted to pique my interest, the oft-rumored WiiHD would show up in a few weeks at E3.

Wow its just a couple of apps dude, so no need to freak out about it. I don't think Nintendo releasing a couple a apps on the DSiWare means that they have turn their back on the people who supposed them for years now.

If that's all it takes to turn you against them, then obviously you weren't much a Nintnedo fan to start with. Microsoft releases shit on XBLA, and the community games all the time, but most people don't freak out about that!

How different is Penguin and friends from the mini-game in Wii Fit?

Not that I have a Wii Fit or anything, but I know a guy who knows a guy...

yeah.

I wish the DSiWare had something interesting like a Virtual Console style collection of NES, SNES and Gameboy games. Who really wants to pay for clocks and calculators when most phones already have those built in?

An abysmal week for DSiWare. Please give us some GAMES, Nintendo. You could do so much with a digital distribution service and you've pretty much squandered your first month.

@PEICanada7

I usually don't like to read when people say "I've been a fan since...", but...yeah. I've been a fan since the NES came out many, many years ago. I've owned the NES, SNES, multiple versions of the Gameboy, a DS Lite, a Gamecube, and a Wii. I've purchased Nintendo toys, t-shirts, and other miscellaneous junk. I've had subscriptions to Nintendo Power. I joined that Nintendo Club and grabbed the Game & Watch DS collection.

...so, there's my quick back-history with Nintendo.

It's not the release of a clock and calculator that turned me...and I'll go so far as to say I'm not entirely giving up hope. Probably should have mentioned that earlier.

It's that here we are, a few weeks after the DSi was released, and instead of releasing DLC that would sway some of the long-time supporters, they drop a clock and a calculator.

Whee?

And, in my opinion, WiiWare has really been lacking.

I'm not a blind supporter of Microsoft or Sony. There is indeed crap out there on XBLA, with tons more shoveled into the Community Games. I've purchased a few games that, afterwards, I've regretted buying. And while my PS1 and PS2 collection combined is nearing 200 games, I've purchased my fair share of shitty games.

But, this is a news post about Nintendo's offering this week. So I didn't mention them.

I eagerly await E3 and Nintendo' presentation, but I am still reminded of the horror that occurred last year.

And this is why I've yet to buy a DSi. Crappy app supports and not enough games. It's going to be like the Apple iPod Touch; filled to the brim with abysmal applications and garbage games flooding the online marketplace.

@Spectral.

Precisely. Except at a rate of about 2 a week instead of thousands

My Wii has literally not been turned off for months now. My mom may have turned it on maybe about a month or two ago to play Resident Evil 4, but I have not turned my Wii on in about 3 or 4 months. Last Game I can remember playing is Animal Crossing: City Folk and that was back in January.

I have lost my interest in the Wii, and pretty much I don't see anything that would motivate me to turn it on, wipe the dust off, and find/buy new batteries for the Wii Remote. The Wii is already messed up, with the automated CD disc drive. I'd rather put my game in by myself, and not have to worry about scratches, or it spitting my game out.

Also, don't complain about the DLC for the DSi. At least be glad you have a DSi, and actually can go and get DLC for the DSi.
