Everyone always says gardening was Shigeru Miyamoto's inspiration for Pikmin. Yeah, we get it. His personal interests often relate to what his videogames are about. Enough already! Way more interesting than that bit of insight is who Miyamoto was targeting with the game:
"Every once in a while, you want to make something that high school girls can get into."
So Pikmin, one of the best original Nintendo series in recent memory, was aimed at high school girls? If the result of Nintendo making a game for that audience is something as incredible as Pikmin, the company needs to do so more often.
Essentially, that is Nintendo's design philosophy these days. With the Wii, everyone's the target audience, including the beloved high school girl crowd. Too bad the best we've seen come out of this initiative is (arguably) Wii Sports. How about you guys start talking Pikmin 3?

Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Around here the only videogames are Call of Duty and Halo. That's it.
Grrr... Too many negatives in that sentence. The point is, you don't have to be a high school girl to enjoy Pikmin, even if Pikmin is targeted at high school girls.
I AM a high school girl. Everyone in England is boring.
oh yeah, get on with pikmin 3 already
Carry on.
No we're not! I've already bought both Pikmins twice (damn Wii releases, wish I never bothered!)
They need to stop targeting audiences and start making games. Not that pretencious mentality of :"I can make games for High-School girls and my name is Hideo Kojima" durp durp durp.
Also uhh Highschool girl? If I liked it does that mean I am a highschool girl? I need to evaluate where I am right now...
Eh, on a more serious note that is interesting news. I guess it doesn't change the fact it ended up being a rad game that reached further than the "targeted demographic".
That sounded so wrong in many ways. Actually, just one.
Oh well, if Miyamoto thinks he's targeting school girls, then so be it.
Geezus. He meant to make something for a demographic and you blame him that the demographic didn't catch onto it? That seems incredibly harsh. Is there a chance it just didn't have the marketing power of those titles? No need to be so rash.
Anyways Pikmin is a lil' too complex (with all due respect) to be picked up by that crowd. It needs to be something that can be instantly grasped, recognized, and addicted to.
The games I remember girls playing in high school (ya know, last year) were Cooking Mama, the aforementioned Wii Sports, Guitar Hero, and the "cool but not really" girls played Halo. Those were the non-gamer types. Even the gamers who were chicks weren't too cool. Zelda, Pokemon, Fable, Mass Effect. Standard fare. I doubt any of them played Pikmin. They'd probably heard about it and tried it but none of them really played it or owned it.
I think Pikmin was just one of those marketing gaffes.
@Pudge - I loved 1, and 2 was solid.
Also I loved Pikmin to death. I am also a girl who has the mental age of like a 15 yr old. So I guess this is fitting - it worked.
Pikmin 3 pleeeez
I thought it was Super Mario Galaxy? Or maybe New Super Mario Bros. Wii?
Of course Nintendo's goal of broadening the number of people that call themselves gamers is going to look bad when you refuse to look past the games you consider to be of low quality.
(Although to be perfectly honest, the only expanded audience game I haven't gotten a kick out of yet is Wii Music, and that had more to do with the price point vs. the amount of value I perceive I would get out of it. Wii Sports and Wii Fit have been a blast -- I don't mind the occasional "casual" game if it's done well and in moderation.)
=P
Suddenly this all makes sense.
One Pikmin.
They said that they couldn't go on, that they felt like a bad person, hearing that pathetic little death moan. That showed that they connected with the game alright, they just couldn't deal with the responsibility that came with it.
YOU FAILED, MIYAMOTO.
I wasn't blaming anything. I'm more butthurt at the fact that no one where I live seems to play anything other than Wii Fit or Halo. Sorry if I came across a bit wrong. ^-^

It's a quote from Lilo and Stitch.
