Nintendo denies Metroid Dread poppycock photo

Despite rumors and speculation surrounding a possible 2D bounty-hunter adventure called Metroid Dread, Nintendo has other plans. Take not making a 2D Metroid game, for instance. How's that for a good plan?

Straight and to the point, from Computer and Video Games:

"Nintendo is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time," Nintendo told CVG.

Oh, good. That's great. Well, at least that'll free up Nintendo's devs to spend some quality time making the games gamers want to play. Like crossword puzzle titles and fourteen Brain Age spin-offs. Because, you know, the readers of Martha Stewart Living would never be able to wrap their heads around a 2D Metroid title, so what's the point?

Maybe Nintendo will hear our exassperated sighs and change its mind. Or hey, I hear online petitions work.

Sigh...guess we have to go give Reggie blow-jobs en masse if we want this game to be produced. And I know I certainly want it to come out.

How much is this worth to you?

If it means no more crappy first-person Metroid games (yeah, I went there) I may have to take one for the team.

Unless this is code for "licensing it to be developed 3rd party," this pretty much sucks.

Then again, we can't even get Nintendo to release us games that already exist. Mother 3 says "Hi."

Metroid is one franchise that doesn't deserve to be milked by Nintendo.

Hey Nick! Stop right now! My granny wants to play more brain age!!

Really, i mean, is ok to attack the no hardcore of the gaming, but, at the end of the day is the hardcore audience that spends more money in the industry.
Nintendo is making a mistake with this hardcore non-hardcore approach.

I remember when I had to buy EGM to get this kind of news because Nintendo Power would be late with it by 6 months. Now both magazines are on the threat of being killed because of blogs like ours. HA

Ok, I bought Resident Evil 4 and Metroid on my new Wii.

Somone please tell me there's another game I can get.

And don't mention the words Mario and Strikers together.

Seriously Nintendo. A 2-d Metroid would kick so much ass. I've been playing the hell out of Super Metroid via VC.

I say give Metroid a rest for a while, leave it whilst it's still on form, then come back to the series once they can deliver something great.

There are plenty of other characters Nintendo could breathe life into, Kid Icarus on the Wii? something like that maybe.

Having said that, why shouldn't they make Metroid Dread? I just can't work Nintendo out - "Right, we've got a choice between another Kirby racing game, Mario Party 9 or that complete, fully realised, non spinoff 3D Pokemon RPG everyone has always wanted and would sell by the millions...Mario Party 9 it is then."

How can they not make Metroid Dread? Not to worry, Mario & Sonic At The Olympics has a DS version too.

They're not releasing a 2d game. They're releasing a 2.5d game, yanno, since that DS doodad has two screens and all.

Eh, a new one will come out before too long. It's too popular a franchise to let it sit around, Samus will be back this generation.

Yeah, Prime 3 is fantastic, but it's true that releasing another so soon would be milking. I for one am glad that this isn't planned anytime soon. Though another Metroid sometime within the next 5 years would be good. You hear me 'Tendo?

@deiga,
I love Mario Strikers. If it's not your thing, it's not our job to rationalize you buying a console with games you don't like.

@zardoz,
I think a big reason they might seem hesitant to make tons of metroid games instead of MP9 or brain age 42 is that metroid doesn't sell so well in japan. Mario Party and brain age, on the other hand, sell extremely well worldwide.

For some reason I would rather them let metroid go out with a bang... Then bring it back out some years later.. Cause there is going to be that one year where the games are going to be MEH... What do you really want to play after brawl and galaxy come out and you beaten it to death...

Metroid is an amazing series, but I think Nintendo is going to try new and innovative things before reverting to their flagships.

How about a new punch out guys? huh? hello? Little Mac? If he isnt in the new smash bros. Im just giving up on this franchise altogether.

I think at this point Dread would have a hard time living up to the hype. I can't really blame Nintendo at this point due to the rabid fan base.

But I would totally love for this to happen.

Kid Icarus sucks. Kid Icarus has always sucked. Metroid was a least cool till it went 3d.

I still hope this is one of those "We're saying one thing but we mean another" things. Because a 2D Metroid on the DS would be excellent. I'd buy one.

I call bullshit. They've been saying Metroid Dread doesn't exist since day one so of course they're saying this officially now. We'll see Metroid Dread someday. It takes time to reinvent the wheel, and that's what I see Dread doing... reinventing Metroid.

I personally rather the 2D metroid titles to the newer 3D ones. Something about them makes all the backtracking you do less painful.

It also could be the cool flipping Samus does.

So then what did "Metroid project Dread is nearing completion" mean. Someone should have asked Nintendo what the significance of that message was.
