If you live in Japan, chances are you eat a lot of sushi, drink a lot of sake, and play a helluva lot of Nintendo DS and Wii games. According to the latest sales numbers, Nintendo is just printingYen by the boatloads. Take a look at the chart:
Mandlebaum123: No. The Wii kinda sucks. No offense, of course, but six months and all we have is the pack-in and (an admittedly very good) Zelda? That just doesn't cut it. Hey, I played Altered Beast on my new Genesis as much as the next guy, but it wasn't exactly NHL 95.
I'm wondering if anyone's getting sick of reading about the weekly japanese hardware sales. No matter how hard I try, I just can't make myself give a shit about them.
I think the Red Flag should be raised that neither the 360 nor the PS3 with Flashy graphics and "sophisticated" game play can even crack the market. If people choose to play thoes games that is what people choose.
The real question should be why no other games are selling. But then we would have to examine flaws in other companies other than Nintendo, and where is the fun in that amirite!
Because the way I am looking at it right now, no console is doing very hot. So if people want to keep things in perspective you might want to check out the industry in a whole and wonder why many places just aren't giving a damn.
Why should it raise any flags? Wii sports is, with good reason, the most popular on the console and wii play comes with controllers. It's perfectly understandable that these would be the top sellers for the wii. As to why there aren't more wii games, 2 reasons:
1.) Waaaaaaaaay more people have DSes than Wiis, so it's only natural that DS software sells better.
2.) Super paper mario wasn't released over there until today.
I think it raises a huge red flag..... of victory.
This might be the beginning of the end of the "fantasy" game (meaning games for teenage boys' power fantasies) being the industry standard.
Games used to be cool in the Atari era. Everyone played them. Then as graphics got better and controls got more complex, games got nerdier. Adults became ashamed to play them. Girls started to see them as excluding and stupid. Only teenage boys remained.
Imagine how much that would have sucked if it happend to the film industry, if the only kinds of movie that made money and won any acclaim were made for the Sci-Fi channel. That would suck. And that is what I have seen happen to gaming over the years. It has been sad to witness.
The Wii is taking things back to the old school, the not just for nerds school, and it is awesome.
Red flag? Perhaps there's only a minority complaining about the Wii's "lack of games" because Wii owners still love the games they already own. Nowadays I play Wii Golf more than Tiger '07 and I paid $50 less for it (and Tiger is by no means a bad game).
And if you don't own Elebits yet, you're cheating yourself.
Trons right, What was cooler than combat the Wii sports of its day? And who didnt love sitting down with Mom and Dad and little Sis to play Pitfall or Asteriods late into the night?
Why would anyone be "concerned" that there are only two Wii titles in the top ten? I didn't see any PS3 or 360 games in the top ten. In fact, I only saw one PS3 game in the top FIFTY! Wii Sports sold more copies this week in Japan than any ten PS3 games combined! In what reality is this a "red flag" for Nintendo!?!
For those that lack the cognitive capacity to understand even the most basic of concepts; these sales figures are good news for Nintendo, and bad news for Sony and Microsoft. The fact that anyone could put negative spin on it regarding Nintendo is laughable.
"Is the fact that Wii Sports and Wii Play are the only two Wii titles in the top 10 a concern or red flag to anyone else?"
Like others have said, why should this raise a red flag? Shouldn't the fact that there's not a SINGLE PS3 or 360 title within the top THIRTY raise a much greater flag?
Summa, are you "in character" whenever you bash Nintendo like this? Are you like the Steven Colbert of gaming blogs? I find it hard to believe you could be this stupid.
I'm just glad to see there aren't any knuckle dragging shooters creeping into the japanese consciousness. The fact that the US market has degraded to exactly 2.5 popular genres is mortifying. I just hope the success of the Wii pushes more interesting developers to localize their games stateside. I would kill for a Wii-sports sequel with racquetball or a more fleshed out version of Wii-play ping pong. There is nothing else like games that actually use the movement capabilities well. A classic dual shock style controller honestly feels antiquated after you get used to the 'mote. I put in Battalion Wars the other night to freshen up in anticipation of the coming sequel and the game seemed so disconnected. I wanted to be able to point at the screen exactly where I wanted to go and shoot and it just got frustrating, it was like there was this invisible barrier between myself and the game. I can't wait for the new BWii.
I think the "not enough new games" complaints towards both the Wii and PS3 are way overblown myself. I've got plenty of stuff to play on the Wii (granted I did get it very late), and quite a few PS2/PC titles I still need to go back to. Are gamers just too impatient nowadays and want instant gratification?
I think some of you just have to much damn time on your hands that's why everyone's complaining about a lack of games. Hell I know buying games is fun if they sold them on the side of the street from guys who wear shadey clothes I'd probably be gamewhore.
