Nintendo confirms possibility of 3DS region locking photo

Last week, it was suggested that the 3DS would region lock its software, and today Nintendo has stated that the 3DS will not be a universal device. Instead, there will be three versions of the system -- one for North America, one for Japan, and one for Europe/Australia.

"Nintendo has developed different versions of Nintendo 3DS hardware to take into account different languages, age rating requirements and parental control functionality as well as to ensure compliance with local laws in each region," states the publisher. "Nintendo 3DS also offers network services specifically tailored for each region.

"Additionally we want to ensure the best possible gaming experience for our users and there is the possibility that Nintendo 3DS software sold in one region will not function properly when running on Nintendo 3DS hardware sold in another."

The general message seems to be that, while some games might not be region locked, others could be. Nintendo helpfully suggests that you don't buy games outside of your own territory to avoid confusion. This is, of course, great news for European customers who get to pleasure of waiting anywhere from six months to a year before Nintendo bothers to give them games.

I don't really care either way, but region-free would be nice for some folks, I expect.

This statement is a giant contradiction. It's almost funny. Except it's kinda sad, but whatever. I'm not much of an importing person. (I've only imported Ikaruga and Shenmue 2.)

best possible gaming experience? lol as much as i like the 3DS the region locked is really a downer. wouldn't it be cool if you were traveling from japan just to buy some cheap 3DS games so that you can play them anywhere you want at anytime?

parental control? really? wow just wow

They make the damn thing yet they can't give a definitive answer as to whether it will work or won't? It's a possibility?

I expect it will be up to the developer, a bit like how there are a few DS games that are region locked for the DSi.

I'll probably buy the import games I want, then use the inevitable jailbreak/R4 thing that'll be released to actually play them. People may call bullshit on my "plan", but I honestly couldn't care less. People are too cynical these days.

That, and we all know that most of the great Japanese games are to "Japanese" to warrant a translation. Unless it's from Atlus or NIS.

Since most of the games on Nintendo consoles worth playing are published by Nintendo, the most important thing will be whether they themselves will implement region locking for their titles.

Does anyone know of any 'DSi enhanced' DS games that are published by Nintendo?

That's no fun. I live in the U.S. and had to import the Tingle game, and am looking at importing the Hotel Dusk sequel.

i still dont understand the idea behind region locks, sony has no issues with it.
and wouldnt you want your consumers to be able to buy as much of your products as they like?

@Ujn Hunter

Here it's "confirmed as a possibility".

Kotaku would be "REGION LOCKING DISSAPOINTINGLY CONFIRMED"

I swear they border on tabloid levels of headline fuckery at times.

People shouldn't get upset at Nintendo for doing this. Be upset at stupid ratings systems and copyright laws. This is a game of CYA for Nintendo. If it wasn't necessary, these things wouldn't happen.

Buying a US model. Games are cheaper and still a lot earlier.

I dislike the whole concept of region locking, it just makes it harder for a game to reach potential buyers, hoping that this ends up either not being true or only being on a few games.

Buying a US model, and if there's an import I really need to play, I guarantee that a flashcart will cost less than buying a whole other 3DS from another region, so I'll probably go with that.

I hope they know that if people can't import games they'll pirate them right? Why is piracy always easier than being honest? If you look at the Wii, I modded it to be able to play imports and as a result I would be able to pirate games. I don't do it but a lot of people do. If I could run imports from the start I wouldn't mod my console.

It's the same as an invading DRM on a PC game, if you pirate the game you have no problems but if you buy it you get the invasive drm in your pc. Why...

Europeans can easily import North American systems and software, I heard it's cheaper than getting them locally anyway.

"Additionally we want to ensure the best possible gaming experience for our users and there is the possibility that Nintendo 3DS software sold in one region will not function properly when running on Nintendo 3DS hardware sold in another."

The second part of that sentence directly contradicts the first. How exactly is making my software not work "ensuring the best possible gaming experience"?

Meanwhile, if Nintendo was looking for a way of driving law-abiding consumers to investigate the dark corners of the internet, well done.

Tabarnaco: Yeah, you're sort of right really, but it's hardly convenient is it? And there are games that slip through and come out in Europe first: remember Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap?

I mostly hope this doesn't affect DS games. I can live with only buying European 3DS games, but I've imported loads of DS games and I won't be able to justify purchasing a 3DS unless it will act as a replacement for my DS Lite.

@SkullLeader: What makes you think it's necessary? The copious amount of media playing devices legally shipped universally that do not feature regions restrictions? Region restrictions aren't a real. They're arbitrary and completely Nintendo's decision.

Im sure since Nintendo wants the "bext experience" for every gamer, they will bring each and every game to Europe and there wont be something like Chrono Trigger that never saw an EU realease untill the DS. Or many of the Atlus games for the newer time beeing.

The one for North America will automatically apply a brown bloom filter to all games.
