Nintendo ceases to publish and ship Metroid Prime Trilogy photo

The Wii has become infamous for the poor sales of traditional games that appeal to traditional gamers, but it's always been considered a problem for third party publishers only. However, the sad fate of Metroid Prime Trilogy seems to confirm that even the Wii's creator is having trouble selling good games.

According to reports, Nintendo has ceased the publication of Metroid Prime Trilogy and won't be shipping the game collection anymore. After a mere four months since launch, Nintendo would only confirm that "you may still be able to locate a copy via stores that specialize in previously played or used games."

While Nintendo hasn't given a reason for this decision, the fact that Metroid Prime Trilogy only managed to sell half a million copies might have something to do with it. With the Wii's install base as high as it is, there is no reason for games of this nature to sell poorly. The ignorance of the majority of Wii owners is quite astounding. When not even Nintendo can ship a good game but titles like Carnival Games still chart, there is something severely f*cked up with the console's install base.

"there is something severely f*cked up with the console's install base." Jimothy dear, thats common knowledge, or it is for us normal people who have a non-nintendo piece of hardware.

Well its nice to see people finally realising how bad this franchise is, admittedly I have only played the newest iteration and the pinball game (which was actually quite good) but thats all I need to say with full confidence Metroid Prime is a failure!(in the FPS genre, it may still have a future in pinball).

Well what can you say? If people don't want to buy one of the best value in gaming last year, than there really is no pleasing them. Nintendo couldn't of done MPT any better. Its three great games, made into a collectors editions, at a value price, and they even had a good pre-order bonus with GameStop. So what else could Nintendo have done to get people to buy it?

Of course I don't see the God Of War collection burning up the charts either, so maybe people just don't want to re-buy old games, that they have already played. All the other Metroid Prime games sold over 1.5 million, so Metroid: Other M will probably do at least that as well. Let's hope so, because if not than the Metroid series could be dead come next generation!

No surprise, I mean no soccer mom ever played Metroid Prime and the fact they are like half of the owners it comes as no surprise. Also same case with old people, small children, people who just don't care about it and teens who have there Modern Warfare the game doesn't have that big a market.

Oh and piracy.

Blue Oddeyssey, you are a genius of deduction. Did you spell odyssey incorrectly on purpose?

This is sad news, I am planning on buying a Wii again so I will be picking this up just to be sure I have it. I'd really like to replay the trilogy even though the third one wasn't fantastic.

"The Wii is an annoying joke, I wish would just go away."

How is it the systems fault that "some" great games for it, aren't selling well? It's the people who own a Wii, but don't buy the good games for it fault, not the system itself. The install base is over 65 million now, so its not going to just go away anytime soon LOL.

Fucking retards who can't recognize a good game even if it danced on their faces. I love my Wii, it sits proudly beside my other consoles (except for handhelds, of course. No sense in leaving them in front of my TV).

Oh come on, why so harsh. I myself have Metroid Prime 1 & 2 on the Gamecube and 3 on the Wii, but felt little desire to get them again with 1 & 2 added waggle. Who here had Halo on the Xbox and then bought it for the PC just because that version had keyboard & mouse control? Although an out of date example I used it because Halo is so popular.

What Nicojay said. I probably bought MP3 not even 6 months before the trilogy came out, and I already owned both MP1 and MP2. Having them all on one or two discs in a tin box isn't enough for me to go drop $30 on it when there are a ton of games I haven't played yet for the same price.

It's not about the ignorance of the Wii owners, man, quite opposite, it's the ignorance of 'hardcore gamers'. But the fact is, Metroid Prime is much more hardcore, than Call of Duty ever will be. And Zelda is much more hardcore than Mass Effect.
That really is the problem of modern game industry, a lot of games look hardcore, but in fact, they're more casual than some 'casual' and kiddy games out there.
I mean Call of Duty is like Cooking Mama of shooters.

I bought it, simply because replaying mp1 in progressive scan with bloom lighting and the wii pointer was too appealing to ignore at the price it was retailing at. and having played it I don't regret it a bit. I have around 40 ps3 games and barely any come close to metroid prime in terms of pure awesome. Jim is right, something is severely fucked up when this doesn't sell.

Nintendo's bullshit strategy has turned around to bite them AGAIN. Will they not learn? Maybe they should give up on home consoles entirely and just go into handhelds, because after their last 3 generations of consoles, they've proven they've completely lost touch with the market.

They thought they'd make a mint by producing a cheap-to-manufacture, under-spec'd console that appeals to everyone in the world, and it's not possible. They got their licks in before word got out, but now even soccer moms see that it's a shovelware dumpster and the nursing homes just aren't investing in copies of Metroid Prime.

In short, fuck Nintendo. They've made this bed, they can lay in it.

Seeing as it was a Collector's Edition, it probably would have been discontinued due to that alone. However, seeing three great games in one stylish package sell so extremely poorly does not bode well. I guess now I see why we haven't seen an F-Zero, Star Fox or many other 'Core' Nintendo titles on the Wii yet.

@ Nicojay2
A better example would be God of War Collection, which has already surpassed Metroid Prime Trilogy in sales despite only recently coming out.

I doubt that sales have anything to do with it. I haven't checked, but I'm sure that Nintendo has released other titles that have not done as well that continue to be produced. I can't be bothered to look up the sales history for the other games that they've released because I'm lazy. Also, with all the shovelware and crapware that is on store shelves for the Wii, it seems like they would want to keep quality titles available.

My theory is that they are going to take it off the market now and then release the "Metroid Prime Trilogy: Citizen Kane Edition" in the lead-up to Other M's release. Yup, that's what I think.

LOL what are you smoking? Do you honestly think Nintendo cares if MPT only sells 500,000 copies for $50, when their selling 30,000,000 units of the WiiFit's for $100. I think you need to come back to reality, because you're the one who is out of touch here! Nintendo is making money hand over fist on the Wii, so why would they get out of the console space, just because people like you don't think the system is hardcore enough for them? GreatRedneckHope is right the arrogance of the hardcore gamer is just disgraceful.

Anybody know how Trilogy's sales compare to Metroid Prime 3's?

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the market didn't bother because they already own all the Prime games. I really enjoyed re-playing MP1 and 2 with the new control scheme, but a lot of people would rather have something new.

@Zerofox360 Im not trolling, i'm genuinely expressing my dislike for this series, I am aware of its popularity and was just clarifying that I'm happy to see a game series which does not satisfy me failing. Most of the time im used to seeing my favourite games in the gutter suffering from a lack of sales (Magna Carta, Spiderman WOS to name a few) so its refreshing to see a popular franchise feel the same effect for whatever reason.
What I can't understand is why you can't express an opinion without someone accusing you of being a troll, im sure everyone has a particular game series that they dislike for whatever reason and just because it happens to be on the Wii doesn't then reflect on the console or Nintendo.

Again, I have to point to God of War Collection, which has already outsold Metroid Prime Trilogy in the short span of time it has been out. Also, it stands to reason that a lot more people have Wiis than people had Gamecubes last generation. As such, there should be a large number of Wii owners out there who never got to experience Metroid Prime I & II - a lot more than the PS3 owners that never got to experience God of War I & II.

Maybe I'm biased, but I even consider Metroid Prime Trilogy to be a much better set of games than God of War Collection. Considering the Trilogy has gone on sale for as little as $20 at places like Best Buy - and they still remained on shelves - it's not exactly encouraging for either Nintendo or third-parties like Capcom, Ubisoft and EA.

(1) Spellchecking your name, before issuing it, is a good thing.
(2) You're getting backlash because you expressed a poor and uninformed opinion
(3) You're sporting an avatar for a franchise that has been poor quality for over a decade then come in to say Metroid Prime Trilogy "bad."

Sonic hasn't had a good console game since the birth of the Dreamcast. We've bad more fond memories from Samus and the five adventures she's had the last eleven years of shovelware from Sonic.

Moral of the story here is Nintendo's core users fail again. They're even neglecting core franchises now. I guess it needed Mario or Link in it for them to buy it :/

I hadn't gotten around to getting a Wii, but I wanted to pick this up when I did. Guess I'll have to hurry up and get a copy while the getting is good.

I have a Wii, I enjoy the Metroid franchise, but I have not intention of picking up this collection. For whatever reason, the Prime games never clicked with me. It's one of those odd situations where you can see the quality of a title and can recognize how other players would enjoy it, but it never caught your interest. So, nope, sorry. Won't be picking it up just to appease my Hardcore nature.

The Prime games on the GC never clicked with me either, but I loved the hell out of MP1 on the Wii. I think it had something to do with controls, specifically being able to aim instead of just use lock-on.

I love the prime trilogy. I am currently playing through MP1 on Hyper Difficulty to finally get 100%. This will be my 4th playthrough counting the GC version. It is such an immersive game like the NES/SNES/GB Metroids. But it does take a certain level of maturity to enjoy. I can see why someone used to holding right and hitting a jump button could be intimidated.

I'm the audience for Metroid games. I didn't buy Trilogy because I already have 1 and 2, and bought 3 for full price. The first two I might have considered, but I was not going to buy the third game twice.

But selling about a third as many copies as MP3 is a bad thing? Most compilations don't sell a lot regardless of the system.

It's not the Wii's problem or Wii owners. It's people thinking these kinds of games should sell more than they do.

I wonder if poor sales has anything to do with fans like myself already owning all three games separately. I think to a good majority of people its not worth buying games you already own for motion control. I'm sure the majority of the Wii's install base are ignorant, but there have to still be a the same amount of hardcore Nintendo fans supporting the Wii as there were the gamecube? Maybe not. Who knows.
