The Wii has become infamous for the poor sales of traditional games that appeal to traditional gamers, but it's always been considered a problem for third party publishers only. However, the sad fate of Metroid Prime Trilogy seems to confirm that even the Wii's creator is having trouble selling good games.
According to reports, Nintendo has ceased the publication of Metroid Prime Trilogy and won't be shipping the game collection anymore. After a mere four months since launch, Nintendo would only confirm that "you may still be able to locate a copy via stores that specialize in previously played or used games."
While Nintendo hasn't given a reason for this decision, the fact that Metroid Prime Trilogy only managed to sell half a million copies might have something to do with it. With the Wii's install base as high as it is, there is no reason for games of this nature to sell poorly. The ignorance of the majority of Wii owners is quite astounding. When not even Nintendo can ship a good game but titles like Carnival Games still chart, there is something severely f*cked up with the console's install base.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Of course I don't see the God Of War collection burning up the charts either, so maybe people just don't want to re-buy old games, that they have already played. All the other Metroid Prime games sold over 1.5 million, so Metroid: Other M will probably do at least that as well. Let's hope so, because if not than the Metroid series could be dead come next generation!
Truer words have nay been spoken.
Oh and piracy.
This is sad news, I am planning on buying a Wii again so I will be picking this up just to be sure I have it. I'd really like to replay the trilogy even though the third one wasn't fantastic.
How is it the systems fault that "some" great games for it, aren't selling well? It's the people who own a Wii, but don't buy the good games for it fault, not the system itself. The install base is over 65 million now, so its not going to just go away anytime soon LOL.
That really is the problem of modern game industry, a lot of games look hardcore, but in fact, they're more casual than some 'casual' and kiddy games out there.
I mean Call of Duty is like Cooking Mama of shooters.
They thought they'd make a mint by producing a cheap-to-manufacture, under-spec'd console that appeals to everyone in the world, and it's not possible. They got their licks in before word got out, but now even soccer moms see that it's a shovelware dumpster and the nursing homes just aren't investing in copies of Metroid Prime.
In short, fuck Nintendo. They've made this bed, they can lay in it.
@ Nicojay2
A better example would be God of War Collection, which has already surpassed Metroid Prime Trilogy in sales despite only recently coming out.
My theory is that they are going to take it off the market now and then release the "Metroid Prime Trilogy: Citizen Kane Edition" in the lead-up to Other M's release. Yup, that's what I think.
LOL what are you smoking? Do you honestly think Nintendo cares if MPT only sells 500,000 copies for $50, when their selling 30,000,000 units of the WiiFit's for $100. I think you need to come back to reality, because you're the one who is out of touch here! Nintendo is making money hand over fist on the Wii, so why would they get out of the console space, just because people like you don't think the system is hardcore enough for them? GreatRedneckHope is right the arrogance of the hardcore gamer is just disgraceful.
I mean your avatar is sonic, therefore I can safely assume that you wouldn't know anything about franchises getting better with age.
Oh and I created my account like 5 minutes ago just to say this I shit you not.
Anyway it's a damn shame that this game is being discontinued like this because idiots would rather play "wii flail our arms around like a retard 40", but at least Other M is still on the horizon.
i dont think wii owners are ignorant
it is just that wii is referred to a more casual audience and children will play something else rather than metroid
Also Jim, I know you're not a journalist, so I'll try to help. Nintendo said before it even launched that it will be shipping a limited number of copies. Notice how they're telling us to buy the game second hand and not from the shelves.
I'd be willing to bet that a lot of the market didn't bother because they already own all the Prime games. I really enjoyed re-playing MP1 and 2 with the new control scheme, but a lot of people would rather have something new.
Seriously, WHAT GIVES? Are Wii owners just THAT IGNORANT?
What I can't understand is why you can't express an opinion without someone accusing you of being a troll, im sure everyone has a particular game series that they dislike for whatever reason and just because it happens to be on the Wii doesn't then reflect on the console or Nintendo.
Again, I have to point to God of War Collection, which has already outsold Metroid Prime Trilogy in the short span of time it has been out. Also, it stands to reason that a lot more people have Wiis than people had Gamecubes last generation. As such, there should be a large number of Wii owners out there who never got to experience Metroid Prime I & II - a lot more than the PS3 owners that never got to experience God of War I & II.
Maybe I'm biased, but I even consider Metroid Prime Trilogy to be a much better set of games than God of War Collection. Considering the Trilogy has gone on sale for as little as $20 at places like Best Buy - and they still remained on shelves - it's not exactly encouraging for either Nintendo or third-parties like Capcom, Ubisoft and EA.
(1) Spellchecking your name, before issuing it, is a good thing.
(2) You're getting backlash because you expressed a poor and uninformed opinion
(3) You're sporting an avatar for a franchise that has been poor quality for over a decade then come in to say Metroid Prime Trilogy "bad."
Sonic hasn't had a good console game since the birth of the Dreamcast. We've bad more fond memories from Samus and the five adventures she's had the last eleven years of shovelware from Sonic.
Moral of the story here is Nintendo's core users fail again. They're even neglecting core franchises now. I guess it needed Mario or Link in it for them to buy it :/
I hadn't gotten around to getting a Wii, but I wanted to pick this up when I did. Guess I'll have to hurry up and get a copy while the getting is good.
Maybe one day I'll find a copy discarded in a stray bin somewhere, begging for a new home.
@Bluemeep
The Prime games on the GC never clicked with me either, but I loved the hell out of MP1 on the Wii. I think it had something to do with controls, specifically being able to aim instead of just use lock-on.
But selling about a third as many copies as MP3 is a bad thing? Most compilations don't sell a lot regardless of the system.
It's not the Wii's problem or Wii owners. It's people thinking these kinds of games should sell more than they do.
