Nintendo can appeal to the BioShock/Halo crowd, apparently photo

Despite presenting stuff like Wii Music as the future of gaming, Nintendo of America is still adamant that it has what the hardcore crowd is looking for. Good old Cammie "That Woman" Dunaway is here to explain how!

"I feel there are titles that should make that group stand up and pay attention next year," explains Cammie, when talking about Call of Duty/BioShock/Halo fans. "If you look at something like [Sega-published FPS] The Conduit that’s really pushing the edge of graphic capabilities on the Wii and doing things that people didn’t think were possible. And I think, one, that makes other developers stand up and take notice. And two, that makes consumers say, 'Huh. Maybe there’s something to this.'

"Or if you look at [Sega-published brawler] Mad World, just the sheer creativity of that graphic style and the impact of the black and the white and the red."

I think it's ironic indeed that the best looking stuff on a Nintendo platform is being published by Sega. Between The Conduit, Mad World and House of the Dead: Overkill, it has been left to a former arch rival to put some really compelling stuff on the system.

As far was what Nintendo was offering that didn't come from a third party, Dunaway had very little to say for herself: "I would assume that a title like Sin & Punishment -- and bringing that  to the U.S. for the first time — would start to get at that action-seeking, thrill-seeking need that that audience has. Punch Out, while it may be more of a Nintendo fanboy [kind of game], still, I think, gets at that need for action."

Yeah ... try harder or don't try at all, Nintendo of America.

Change Wii Need

Honestly if anything the Wii has outperformed every game console in history when it comes to lame pun opportunities, until the Nintendo NO U is released.

This whole notion that nintendo has changed is really ridiculous. If you look at the evolution and history of gaming Nintendo has maintained its philosophy throughout. Nintendo has always desired to bring gaming to the whole family. There were mature titles in the past-but by the standards of the 21st century they are not where we are at now. Yes they were revolutionary due to their time in gaming. Yes there were some great mature games but by and large the nes and snes libraries were full of shlock(yes you liked it back then as you now reminense to your childhood, but isnt that what all the kids are doing today with the wii who have never experienced video games before? I scratch my head when I hear people talk about nintendo like all the games they made wer Goldeneye or Ocarina. THey made some great games but by and large 80 or more percent of the 1000s of titles were very similar to what nintendo is doing today. But with technology other companies have picked up the mantle and are utilizing technology to its fullest to focus on those more mature games while nintendo is still putting out its classic "hardcorish stuff" in similar proportion as they did back in glory days. Its been two years and they have put out a zelda, metroid, smash, mario galaxy-that is about par for the course-so proportionately they are the same. Hardcore has never been their mainstay. Old timers get grumpy when IPs from their childhood dont come out every year but is that what they did in the beginning?
Now the powerhouses(xbox,ps3 focus on the mature games and nintendo fanboys soemhow think thats how nintendo used to be? No the powerhouses always put out 80% mature and 20%family while Nintendo has always done the oppossite.

Jim, I'm not missing point of the article, I realize it's not a shot at my precious Wii. And I agree that Nintendo doesn't care about me, someone who has grown up with Nintendo consoles. But I don't take it personally. Nintendo has never cared about any of us, they are just a corporation making smart business decisions.

@ Jim

His post seemed to be a general assessment of the site to me, and you know what? He's not exactly wrong. I don't know that it's something to get bent out of shape about, but yeah, it happens just the same.

Anyway.
