Nintendo can appeal to the BioShock/Halo crowd, apparently photo

Despite presenting stuff like Wii Music as the future of gaming, Nintendo of America is still adamant that it has what the hardcore crowd is looking for. Good old Cammie "That Woman" Dunaway is here to explain how!

"I feel there are titles that should make that group stand up and pay attention next year," explains Cammie, when talking about Call of Duty/BioShock/Halo fans. "If you look at something like [Sega-published FPS] The Conduit that’s really pushing the edge of graphic capabilities on the Wii and doing things that people didn’t think were possible. And I think, one, that makes other developers stand up and take notice. And two, that makes consumers say, 'Huh. Maybe there’s something to this.'

"Or if you look at [Sega-published brawler] Mad World, just the sheer creativity of that graphic style and the impact of the black and the white and the red."

I think it's ironic indeed that the best looking stuff on a Nintendo platform is being published by Sega. Between The Conduit, Mad World and House of the Dead: Overkill, it has been left to a former arch rival to put some really compelling stuff on the system.

As far was what Nintendo was offering that didn't come from a third party, Dunaway had very little to say for herself: "I would assume that a title like Sin & Punishment -- and bringing that  to the U.S. for the first time — would start to get at that action-seeking, thrill-seeking need that that audience has. Punch Out, while it may be more of a Nintendo fanboy [kind of game], still, I think, gets at that need for action."

Yeah ... try harder or don't try at all, Nintendo of America.

NoA has a lot to account for. Of course if they drop a wicked new Zelda on me, where I can use a classic controller instead of that Wii-mote nonesense, then I'll love them forever again.

Sega makes the most compelling games for the Wii confirmed. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself this when I was six.I would blow my own mind.

I've kinda given up on Nintendo.

They truly, truly have forgotten us.

And with such loyalty I've had over the years, this makes me angry.

No disrespect Jim but since when were The Conduit, Mad World and House of the Dead: Overkill the most compelling stuff on the Wii?

The Nintendo's offerings that didn't come from other a third party, while Dunaway didn't say it, are some of the best 1st party games games around. Mario, Zelda, Metroid Prime, Brawl as well as Mario Kart are quality titles through and through.

How much harder do you want them to try?

I see no issue on the Wii having more 3rd party games than 1st party now, it was always the other way around and peeps bitched as hell.

i play games for more than 20 years now and i see no forgetting the core thing, i played The force unleashed, megaman 9 and chocoboīs dungeon, moved to deBlob, CoD WaW and i am on tales 2 now, have unopened, Wario, lego batman, disaster and monster lab and i am waiting for NFS and tomb raider, that was the immediate past and future, so there is love, we are only wanting them to shove a Zelda a year, when PS360īs offer is mostly 3rd party, why should Wii be different. :D

GOT 'ER!

gamecube = ssbm + some other ok crap

wii = same shit, different name

The only difference was the wii's "shock" value in the beginning that jump started all of this casual madness. I think it'll be good for the industry in a couple of years once the 10 year-olds grow some cajones, but right now its just fucking annoying. At least Sega's starting to realize they need to make other games besides those starring their mascot.

Well as long as you're making fun of NoA that's cool. Nintendo as a whole though has probably put out more quality games in about a year exept for those who have taken over quite a number of companies ie EA.

On the other hand...they've yet to reveal they're poker hand for the coming years and I can understand why people have started to call their bluff.

MadWorld looks amazing btw. Must get!!

Does everyone always need to turn anything with the word "Nintendo" in it into a flame war?

I'm a rabid Nintendo fanboy. I admit that right now. But you know what the next 3 games are that I want to look into? Fatal Frame IV, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and Disaster: Day of Crisis. NONE OF THEM ARE COMING TO THE U.S. Nintendo of American truly sucks now, and that's what Jim was trying to say.

Well its true that Sega is doing some great stuff on the Wii in 2009, and its for the hardcore gamer. Will the hardcore gamer respond to that, and buy those games is another question. We'll just have to wait, and see if that happens, but if it doesn't than hardcore gamers should just give up, and stop whining. Because you just won't see a hardcore push like this again on the Wii from one single company. Which could anyone really blame Sega for going back to the cash-cow casual family friendly games if any of those "hardcore gamer" games fail?

As for Nintendo of America what do you expect Cammie to say? She's only going to talk about what's been announced already which was Sin & Punishment 2, and Punch Out!! Its not like she's just going to say oh yeah by the way you guys are going to love the new Zelda, StarFox, and Kid Icarus games coming out next year. I'm sure Nintendo will reveal their 2009 games more in time, but its not like they're going to just blurt them all out in a MTV Multiplayer Blog interview!

Pretty fucking typical, Nintendo. It's like they do only enough to say, "See, we totally didn't forget about you! Here's a couple of games!" And then they don't do shit. Nintendo is really only doing as much as they need to do in order to not completely chase us off.

It's like the abusive boyfriend/husband who acts like a neglectful dick to his woman, but keeps convincing her to stay just a little bit longer by buying her flowers and saying, "Hey baby, I'll change. I promise." And then he never does.

Also, I love that Sega is doing the heavy-lifting for the hardcore. I always preferred them to Nintendo.

You do know that Nintendo has absolutely nothing to do with Tatsunoko VS Capcom right? Its a Capcom property, and as such Nintendo couldn't have that game come on the Wii in North America even if they wanted it to. Its not they're decision to make!

I shared garison's opinion as soon as I heard Club Nintendo was announced, but the light soon left my eyes.

While I'm closely watching The Conduit and Madworld, I realized that I'm not going to buy nearly enough Nintendo stuff to net me some of the upper echelon coolness that Club Nintendo will have.

I'll soon be the Tantalus to Nintendo's so-called 'reward program' if they ever offer up the Super Mario Galaxy Soundtrack...

Why is it that whenever someone at NoA is interviewed about core gamers, it feels like they are completely and utterly disgusted by us(the core)?
Even this interview is full of that disgust. She never ever uses the term core gamers or anything of that kind, even though Nintendo were the bastards whos caused that stupid division into core and casual amongst gamers in the first place.

No she won't use it! Instead she referst to them/us as "that audience". Did someone ever tell her that it is impolite and borderline offensive to refer to someone as "that guy"? Same rule aplies with a whole group of people.
But then again we refer to her as "that woman"...

Whatever the argument still stands because she is in PR and that means her job is to be as nice as possible to every potential customer.

But whith this current attitude of NoA I feel more like a horrible monster that is fed a bone in order to keep it from feasting on the sweet an meaty flesh of Mr. Reggie "The Hamburgler" Fils-Aime.

As far as I am concerned, Nintendo died a long time ago.

When these guys released the Wii I was like "You know what? Maybe they aren't dead". We saw Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Kart Wii but that was it.... all of it. They were the only games worth buying.

What a crock of shit Nintendo, how about you actually start making quality games and make good descisions instead of releasing your DSi and your Wii2 in the future. You guys seriously need to look at yourselves, you guys aren't popular for a reason.

Since when is Nintendo not popular? The general public doesn't whine on blogs because Wii games aren't "hardcore" enough. Most people are pleased with their Wii Sports. Nintendo of America isn't going to abandon a marketing philosophy that is clearly working for them because Jim Sterling doesn't have enough video games to play on his weekends.

"Yeah it's popular with the new 'casual' market but abandons all us old Nintendo fans in the process."

You spouted off a list of some of the games that Nintendo put out over the past two years on the Wii. Which is more frequent big Nintendo games than they have ever put out that fast before so what's the difference between now, and the GC days? The difference is Nintendo has found a new audience to help replace the loss of core gamers, and most core gamers are just whining over it. I just don't get why! Everyone was fine last-gen when Nintendo was the redheaded stepchild of the video game world stuck in 3rd place.

No one complained this much about Nintendo only putting a game out every 3 to 6 months back then, and contrary to what everyone believes Nintendo is still putting out a title a month from August through November. Which that's not even including the 3 WiiWare ArtStyle games they put out as well so really Nintendo is putting out more than a game a month. Sure its a mixture between core, and casual titles, but why should they pick one over the other. Core gamers are just pissed off because they don't have Nintendo all to themselves anymore. Its like a jealous sibling when a new baby comes into the house!

Oh, so now Sin and Punishment and Punch Out aren't good enough? This isn't Reggie saying that Animal Crossing should hold over the core market - these are games that we all flipped out about like 2 months ago. Now, we're complaining. Seriously. Everyone. Shut. Up.
