Nintendo blows off Japan's sales slide, has cookies instead photo

The PS3 has enjoyed a successful few months in the land of the rising sun, beating out sales of the Wii for the past sixty days. The PS3 totaled out at 86,000 units in February, while the Wii was only able to move 76,000. For March, PS3 amped it up even more at 116,000, while Wii sales were only about 70,000. The Wii, losing steam, you say? POPPYCOCK!

It's not like Nintendo to admit anything they've ever said or done is wrong though (kind of like all of my ex-boyfriends), and in a recent chat with Financial Times, a Nintendo spokesperson said that "it is still the first few months of the year when sales are slow for the industry so we are not particularly concerned... we hope to line up strong software to support hardware sales in the second half of the year.” Why be concerned since the loss of a few thousand are a drop in the pond compared to the billions you roll in every night, right, Nintendo?

Eh, I doubt this means anything big for either company. We'll see how system sales fare over there once the two companies have released their A-material for the year.

Nintendo just sold so much that the consumers don't need buy as much, they can go to their friends to play or they already have one in their house. A lot more people have Wiis than PS3s. Sony is just rising up for w/e reason, probably sofware? Maybe because of SFIV lol...

And let's face it, Japan isn't that large of a market. North America and Europe have vastly larger populations to pander to.

i think they are missing the point that almost every house in Japan already has a Wii, there wouldnt be much of a point in buying it twice.

I expect Wii sales to skyrocket in Japan in the following months.

There's 8 million Wii's sold in Japan. That's about twice as many GameCubes sold over there. Japan's population is over 120 million. So yeah, not everyone in Japan owns a Wii or a DS for that matter.

I'm not that concerned about the Wii's situation over in Japan right now. I mean, the market is unpredictable and picky. Japan didn't show much interest in Trace Memory R, Let's Tap or the New Play Control titles.

I'd be surprised if Japanese gamers show any interest in Punch-Out!!, Excitebots and The Conduit. MadWorld hasn't been released there but chances are it would have bombed anyway.

I don't think Klonoa sold well either. However, titles like Wii Sports Resort, Monster Hunter 3 and perhaps Little King's Story (given its similarity to Animal Crossing and Pikmin) may do well.

It still prints money! So Sony has sold more PS3 than the Wii this week, Big deal. How many Wiis have they sold total compared to the PS3? Yea, that's right.

Who cares? Everyone and their and their mother probably owns a Wii at this point, slow sales aren't a sign of anything.

I think people also have to remember that unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo hasn't offered any price cuts, official bundles or even new colors for the Wii.

Nintendo's beginning to saturate the market, perhaps?

I'm not sure why people even pay attention to these kinds of sales numbers. It seems to me that cumulative sales are what is important, and a few thousand more units for a few months is nothing compared to how far ahead they are.

Nintendo can't release new color consoles on Wii because first of all, they'd need a process to transfer all you stats, VC and WW games from one console to another.
