What's next, are they going to start releasing multiple versions of the same console every few months with slight upgrades (or, in some cases, possible downgrades) screwing over the people that bought the previous one just a little sooner?
Or, gosh, what if they spend a good portion of their next console release trying to push a brand new optical disk format?
Those sneaky, money-loving bastards...
Honestly, I still can't believe this nonsense is out there. Grandmas aren't the ones keeping Brawl, Kart, Galaxy, etc. selling like hotcakes. I know a few casuals who have the Wii, but they just use it for WiiSports like once in a blue moon. The gamers are the ones actually fueling Nintendo's riches. Nintendo needs to realize this as well....
I don't get all the bitching. I'm not a Nintendo apologist, I'm just the sort of person who thinks that you're better off letting your wallet do the speaking for you, rather than pissing and moaning like a bunch of children.
If you think that Nintendo sucks for not sending Reggie to your house to personally give you a hand-job, then sell your Nintendo products and take your business elsewhere. And if you don't own them, and wouldn't be likely to buy them given that they don't appeal to your particular sensibilities, then you have even less of a reason to flap your lips.
Seriously, I get that some of you are disappointed. I don't necessarily disagree with much of it. It's just the negativity that you people perpetuate is very fucking tiresome. Just because the internet affords you the ability to be cock-holes about every fucking thing, doesn't mean you have to. You can express your disappointment without blowing things out of proportion. Save the fucking theatrics.
Fucking hell.
Nintendo did even say that Mario, Legend of Zelda, and Pikmin games are in the works, so they haven't abandoned core gamers completely, just kind of forgot about us as they swam in their huge vaults of gold Scrooge McDuck-style.
That being said, they still fucked up E3, and really need to get their shit together in the PR development to stay on top. The thing about the more family-oriented-Wii-Sports-esque games is that that audience won't stay interested forever. Those soccer moms will move onto a new Oprah-sponsored fad, and when that happens, there might not be much a core fanbase left to cushion the fall.
It's like someone who drinks Red Bull for breakfast - that caffine and sugar is not going to keep you functional throughout the whole day.
People treat Nintendo's games as some sort of berometer with which to measure how worthwhile the Wii is, as if third parties don't exist, and aren't releasing product for the thing. That's why Nintendo is being crucified by the so-called hardcore crowd, despite some really interesting stuff being in the works for the Wii, a lot of it which seems like it ought to directly appeal to them.
Hell, take Madworld for instance. It might not be a game that everyone is gonna want to play, but you can't deny that it appeals directly to the hardcore crowd's sensibilities. Yet they ignore the existence of games like this, because to admit that they're out there would mean that they couldn't bitch anymore about that particular matter. People love to whine about shit, and so they'll be more likely to re-write reality for themselves than acknowledge anything that'll put a cap on that shit. It's fucking mind-numbing.
Though when you cut down to it, a good game is a good game, regardless of its hardcore sensibilities, or lack thereof. Only the hardcore crowd is so far up it's own ass collectively, that they can't, or don't want to, see that. They want games that are brutally difficult, and that are filled with "Mature Themes". I would argue that the hardcore crowd has long-since lost track of what gaming is really about, and that if they were as devoted to the hobby as they claim, they'd stop being so divisive about it.
To quote some random dude, STFUAJPG.
How did I draw your ire? I pretty much agree with everything you say....
So while Nintendo may or may have not abandoned the hardcore crowd; something that's dependent on the subjective, ever-mutating definition of what makes a game hadcore in the first place, what does it matter? You're still gonna get your hardcore-gamer tezzies tickled, even if the fingers doing the tickling belong to a third-party.
And hell, aint it a good thing that Nintendo is laying off their long-established franchises a bit? I mean, the fact that you guys are myopic about the role of sequels in the industry where Nintendo is concerned, and that you seem to believe that whatever problem that they represent is something to attributed solely to Nintendo aside, you guys do in fact bitch about them. So it would seem like it's a good thing that they're not cranking out another Mario or Zelda sequel, wouldn't it?
Of course that would rely on you fuckers remaining consistent from one bitching-session to the next, but that's another matter entirely.
I got that, actually. And you didn't raise my ire. I just wanted to elaborate, since you seemed receptive to whatever rant I had posted there. :P
Nintendo, you need to start doing something with your library of games for the Wii. So far there have been cock all exclusives, and when they are exclusives they are shit.
other that character design and story is there really a difference between GoW 2 & Resistance 2? i'm getting sick of the same ol grey and brown FPS and nintendo has the cure for my ill
I posted elsewhere earlier about the hardcore/casual divide and how bs it is, so I won't elaborate further.
I will say that sequels bring out the most ridiculously schizophrenic responses in gamers. The same guy will make fun of the Wii's dependence on new Mario and Zelda games in one thread and then masturbate about the next Final Fantasy, Gears of War, Metal Gear Solid, or Resident Evil in the next.
I have no problems with sequels. Some of our most innovative games are sequels. Don't believe me? Super Mario Brothers is a sequel to Mario Brother which is a sequel to Donkey Kong. Super Mario 64 is a sequel to Super Mario Brother. Smash Brothers and Mario Kart are sidequels to all of these games. Donkey Kong, Super Mario Brother, and Mario 64 all revolutionzed gaming, while Smash Brothers and Mario Kart opened up racing and fighting to whole new heights. I admit, not all sequels are innovative, but there is nothing intrinsic about a video game sequel that destroys innovation.
In other forms of media, yes, sequels are usually pretty dumb. With the exception of The Dark Knight, God Father 2 and a handful of others, movie sequels are almost always worse than the original. Video games, however, are, by nature, dynamic. Because of this, most sequels are, at the least, evolutionary, while many are revolutionary.
I love sequels. It means something I like will be made fresh again. The next person I see criticizing sequels will be forced to prove they never liked a single game other than the first in a series....
Really? You consider a generic snowboarding game, a barely different 3rd iteration of Animal Crossing, Wii Sports 2, and Rock Band for pre-schoolers different? If that's your thing then whatever, but different it is not.
Oh come on, you're just concentrating on what Nintendo talked about during their much maligned E3 show. Nobody's E3 demonstration was very awe-inspiring.. besides Xbox getting FF13.
Well, I thought this is what we were talking about since it was the topic. But if we're talking about the rest of the stuff shown on the floor, you guys' are dismissing the other consoles' stuff too like Flower, Fat Princess, Fable 2, Pixel Junk Eden, and what MS showed on stage like that movies game and teh idea of prime time gaming. I'm just saying you guys are being equally selective.
But honestly, none of this matters since the topic was originally about Nintendo's showing at E3 and how they ultimately failed to show anything for the "hardcore" after promising they would. I'm appreciative of Iwata's apology (especially after Reggie's and Cammie's comments) but they should really know better by now. For now, I'll chalk up the "fans of Mario and Zelda" part to him just using an example since he should also know that we expect more than that. We expect something new that isn't meant for the "casual" market.
wii music hopefully wont lead to old ladies putting videos on youtube like dumb twat 12 year olds with guitar hero.
Many of the attendees at E3 DID have hands on with Wii Music and it was unanimous... it sucks ass (but will sell a billion copies).
Having a president that is made of Meat is also quite different, but different isn't always a good thing.
(Yes I'm still annoyed by Nintendo's Conference, but not so annoyed that I think they're teh d00med and I'm not selling my Wii)
$250 bucks is a lot to spend just to feel like you fit in. I guess your friends didn't mind paying the price. Did their dissapointment in the Wii coincide with yours too? I bet it did.
Ah, the lengths people will go to in order to feel like they belong.
Rock Band on Wii looks like garbage, the notes are bland and dull looking and it's harder to tell the hammer-ons if you didn't already know where they were. But maybe that's just because it was an HD flat screen tv, I dunno.
I don't blame Nintendo really, but they did take what could have been an awesome system (even though it had less power than the competition) and pointed it in the waaaaaay wrong direction.
I wouldn't think so...he said the Wii would be a guaranteed failure (watch out for the sunlight hitting your sensor bar folks!), and the sales certainly say otherwise. But honestly though, who gives a flying fuck what Summa thinks? This site is 1000% better without him.
Also, killias2 and Cyberxion, I need to look out for your posts more often. Great writeups.
I just ordered Guilty Gear Accent Core for the Wii, should be coming in soon; don't see the casual crowd all over that one.
Lower your expectations for E3 and you'll be much more content with the announcements made at it.
