Nintendo apologizes to real gamers: Sorry for the 'misunderstanding' photo
     Nintendo

While ham-flavored Reggie Fils Aime was adamant that we should have been happy with Nintendo's horrifying E3 press conference, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has taken a classier approach and actually apologized for leaving "hardcore" gamers out in the cold. He claims that Nintendo's "abandonment" of the core gamer is a misunderstanding, and suggests Nintendo intends to clear up that conception.

"We are sorry about (the E3) media briefings, specifically for those who were expecting to see Nintendo show something about Super Mario or Legend of Zelda," stated the soft-spoken prez. "If there is any perception that Nintendo is ignoring the core gamers, it's a misunderstanding and we really want to get rid of that misunderstanding by any means."

A far cry from Reggie's beefburger arrogance, proving our theory that Nintendo of Japan > Nintendo of America. I still don't expect much from Nintendo anymore, and don't hold any grudges against the company for that, but if the big N is willing to put in the legwork to make real gamers happy again, I certainly wouldn't complain. I'm just not holding my breath.

Thing is, when Nintendo has tons of 1st party releases, 3rd parties complain that they can't compete. When Nintendo fails at putting out 1st party games, gamers complain.

Fuckers can't win.

The sad thing to me is that Nintendo seems to think that all 'core' gamers want are reiterations of the same stale franchises over and over. The LAST thing this world needs is another video game starring Mario or Zelda.

Nintendo - how bout growing a set of balls and come up with a new IP?

I'm more disappointed by Iwata's statement than that of Honey Ham Aime. It seems as though Iwata believes core gamers only care about Mario and Zelda, which I think makes him seem more out of touch than anything.

What did "core gamers" really expect? Nintendo has been developing a market strategy based on accessibility for years now; nothing about E3 should have been a surprise. Personally, I still enjoy playing a Wii game every once in a while. I think the better games on the Wii deliver a gaming experience reminiscent of old favorites, but with added style and mechanics.

If a core gamer bought a Wii with the notion that it would be their only console, they clearly haven't been following Nintendo for the last ten years, which, one could argue, doesn't make that person very "core" at all.

Yeahhhhh, less Mario and Zelda and more original games that aren't glorified tech demos or 'lifestyle' titles, please. This fixation on the same handful of franchises by both Nintendo and fans is getting really tiresome.

Imagine how many unique classics Nintendo could have generated over the past 10 years if they weren't putting all their energies into the same franchises, the only game that I can think of that was a genuinely strong new franchise was Pikmin, and now even that is going to be milked to it's grave.

As someone who has played Nintendo games his whole life, it's gotten to the point for me where making a good game isn't good enough when the concepts, characters, and setting are so utterly done to death and depleted that they've even been robbed of their nostalgia factor.

If the best Nintendo can come up with is 'okay we'll give the nerds Mario and Zelda and Pikmin so they'll shut up' I can only hope that Microsoft or Sony's motion controllers will provide the games that the Wii should be.

I think people love the idea of the Wii more than they actually love the Wii itself.

Nintendo told gamers "It has precise motion control and seriously innovative design"

We believed it would be like: "Holy crap! I just mauled that guy with a 50 hit combo by acting like a ninja in my living room!"

Nintendo sold gamers: Carnival games, Bowling, and a fitness game.

We reacted with: "Wii music? WTF is this shit?Where's my living room ninja games?!"

That's just the way I feel personally.

Despite the fact that the show floor waS full of other games. If Nintendo didn't show it in their breif speech, it doesn't count.

Note to Nintendo: If you read this do not misinterpret it and bring out "Living Room Ninja" a game about a young ninja forced to do chores in mildly ninja-esque ways.

What was that game called that looks like a black and white no more heroes that's in development?

is just a lack of variety, or re-release. it's sad when they just surf trough the most selled games in another console and just add waggle moves. RE4, Okami, Dead Rising....what's next... Mass efect?, Bioshock? dont make me go there...

RE4, Okami, and Dead Rising are ports. Lots of systems have ports. Most of the 360 and PS3 libraries are identical with eachother or with the PC. Don't even give the Wii shit for getting some ports. As a sidenote, RE4 started as a Gamecube game, so, if anything, it was just coming back home. You kids always complain about how the Wii is just a glorified GC, right?

Also, I understand the complaints against waggle when it's used horrible, a la Carnival Games. However, there is a consistent pattern here, which involves the following:

1. Define any use of the Wiimote as waggle.
2. Complain that games don't use the Wiimote in ways besides the waggle.

You see the issue here? If anything, Okami's motion controls were not waggle controls. It made use of the sensor bar and the pointer.

We don't know what the Dead Rising port will be like, but I'm, personally, excited. RE4 did a great job in integrating Wii motion controls without changing the game too much. Okami did an okay job, but should've spent more time polishing it.

"another issue is when developers just atopped making any game wathsoever for the wii that isn'nt gimmicky. what about shmups, 2d and 3d fighters. Rpgs, adventure games. "

Shmups come out like 3 at a time for Wiiware. Also there is Blastworks, which has gotten pretty good reviews. Smash Brothers is the system's primary fighter, and it's pretty sweet. Guilty Gear XX Accent Core is also available for the Wii. Zelda, obviously, is the premier Action-Adventure for the Wii, but Okami is there as well.. and this very article implies that the Zelda team is busy. Tales of Symphonia 2 is coming out for the RPG hungry, and Super Paper Mario is there (although it is very much a platformer-RPG hybrid).

There are good games for the Wii. There are also tons of crappily made minigame compilations. I just don't buy the latter....

Then it was cancelled and I began to see music and cooking games getting top billing over action games and I immediately lost interest in the entire console.

They don't really have to apologize, E3 is an entirely different entity now. Why the majority hasn't caught on to that fact confuses me, besides that xxxhardcorexxx gamers are impossible to please and want their IPs handed to them monthly on a golden platter.

Also, as long as developers along the lines of Suda51 stick around to bring fresh ideas to the Wii (making it look like a 360 game or adding 200 liters of blood is not a fresh idea), I don't really care about the "left out" feeling.

When I think about it, Nintendo didn't necessarily do anything wrong with their E3 showing. When it comes to their "core" game franchises, they don't release them like clockwork. There have only been 7 non-portable Zelda games in it's 22-year history (granted, The Phantom Hourglass should be included anyways, because it's among the best of them). Traditional Mario Bros. games have only hit console 7 times as well in a longer span of time.

And this year was no different than last year in terms of announcements. Last year they hyped Wii Fit and the Zapper attachment that makes "lightgun" games harder to play. There only giving us more of the same.

What ticks me off is the smugness about it. Cammie What-Ever-Her-Name-Is and Reggie Meathead-Whose-Name-Isn't-Pronounced-Like-It's-Spelled both went the Holier Than Thou approach to responding to their critics (i.e. us). And that makes me feel that they doubt our importance. And that makes me want to show them that they do need us. Because we'll be the ones still buying video games after this fad wears off.

Actually, I have been predicting this breaking point for a while. Eventually, Nintendo runs out of gimmicks and assumes people will be satisfied with more of the same.

Behold, the final moments of a legend.

It's impossible for me to get into anything on the Wii. I'm a graphics snob, and when I play my 360 for a month straight and then play my friends Wii, it feels like I'm playing an N64 with crappy motion controls. I respect the Nintendo crowd for their love of innovation,(I like innovation too, just not at the cost of a 'complete game'.) but how many hardcore gamers haven't jumped ship yet? Granted, the main reason I have one console, is because I can afford to have one console, with a family and my current pay.
Neonie's Avatar

It's so fucking sad to see what Nintendo was and what they've become. Ya Nintendo's goal was always to try to appeal to family (especially with the original NES which was called the "Famicon" (Family-Console) in Japan.

But for some reason, it's sad to see them finally succeed in that goal. I feel like I should be happy for them but fuck, I remember an SNES I used to play for hours when I was younger, I remember the original NES I had a good few games on, I remember the Nintendo 64 which kept up good course. Then the gamecube came, it had it's fair share of good games but just wasn't popular enough in the long run. Now we have Wii. But what Wii doesn't stand for "Wii Gamers". That Wii stands for "Wii Grandmaws" becuase Nintendo was forced to come up with a strategy that would actually work after the GC.

It's depressing the to see the developer I loved the most, go down the road I can't fucking stand. It's like watching your sister or brother start doing crack.
