Nintendo announces DSvision, official DS download service photo

It was inevitable. All these kids setting their R4's afire with all the latest games and figuratively flipping off the economy could only run wild and free for so long. Nintendo's more than aware of what's going on, and it's been rumored for a while that they were considering some way to offer a service that could draw the attention away from piracy and towards legality. As of today, the rumor has become a reality with the announcement of DSvision.

AM3 and Dai Nippon have joined forces and signed an agreement with Nintendo to produce the product, which will launch in Japan in January. It comes with a 512 MB microSD card and a high-speed USB adaptor to connect to your PC for file transfer. All this will retail for the rough equivalent of $36 US dollars. DSvision, the download service, will launch shortly after in March.

Now, this all sounds fine and dandy, but the question is whether or not this will slow piracy on the DS. It's currently one of the easiest systems to pirate and R4 users are abundant. While it sounds as if the DSvision service may offer a really cool range of downloadable content (books, comics, movies and music will all be available,) it's hard to talk people out of getting games for free, illegal or not.

The service would have to make it to the US first to do well here, ya know.

I can rattle off 3-4 download services that Nintendo's tried in the past that didn't make it outside Japan.

BS system, Famicom Disk System, DD64, for example. Nintendo's been all over this shit in the past, but we never see it leave Japan.

It's all well and good, but it's nothing more than just fluff unless it launches here.

Also, I'm not paying $36 for a 512MB MicroSD card, no way.

I think the $36 is mostly covering the cart that the card plugs into. The R4 doesn't come with a card at all, and it goes for around $45. And you have to import it from like Hong Kong (although I got free shipping).

What Im wondering is how long till someone writes a new OS for the card that turns it into an R4

Unless I'm misunderstanding I don't see how this is being made to counter the R4. Does the service offer games for download for a discounted price over retail? If it does not offer games for download I don't see how this is intended to be competition for the R4. Sure some people use the R4 for legitimate things, but I'd say the majority use it for pirating.

Books, comics, movies and music.
Products that personaly don´t sound good for a DS. A book will always be a book for me if it has pages and smells like pages and ink, as well as comic books.
Movies and music sound good for a DS, but the 512 mb sounds ridicolous.
I think it´s nice move from Nintendo, but poorly adapted to teh reality.

Well now I know what the R4 is. Good to know my Games 'n Music isn't the only retail thing that does this. :)

How on earth will this slow down R4 sales? It sounds like Nintendo is stabbing their own anuses with this one.

@ShadowXOR - Most places I've seen the R4 at have it bundled with at least a 1GB card, normally around a 2GB, and running around $50-$55.

Dude you wont be upset, when I learned of the R4 (few months back) I had to have it. Best thing Ive ever bought. Before that my DS kinda just sat, and my girlfriend used it to play Mario. Now that I have it, I play it all the time. Hell I even talked my buddie into getting one for him, and now we play so many games WiFi style.

That was one of the biggest selling points, is that everything stays the way it was originally. And I love the fact I can selected a bunch of different games and then be able to use a soft reset and play another without having to turn the fucking thing off.

And to everyone that bitches about pirating, stfu.

Im 25 years old, I pay a morgage, and bills. Wait till you get out on your own, you keep trying to buy all this shit haha

Spencers: If you pirate, fine. But don't make sad excuses for why it's OK. I pirate sometimes too (rarely) but I know what I'm doing is stealing. You can lie to others but it's really sad when you have to lie to yourself. And yes, I pay tons of bills too. Just because you can't afford it doesn't mean you should steal it.

And as I said, I pirate things too but not very often and I try to buy them when I can. No one is perfect but at least be a man about it, not a bitch.

Why can't you download it via WiFi from the Wii? Way to use the technology you already have in place, Nintendo.

They stole this from the Internet.

I don't get it. How will this hinder piracy, and not help it?

R4 is the number one reason to own a DS, ignoring the piracy you can encode video to watch on the ds (its okish) you can play music files and run homebrew apps. Some of the apps are simply stunning and have to be used to be appreciated. The best for me is Colors http://www.collectingsmiles.com/colors/ this drawing app is VERY good even at the ds resolution. I think the DS has payed for itself by now and any attempts to thwart piracy remind me of the ps1 modchip era. It is just too late.

I think it is cool that they are taking the initiave towards other features available on other portable consoles. They are already waaaay ahead of the game IMO in both portable and console. Adding the ability to have the internet on it was a plus and something I hoped for. Its too bad i bought the third party usb flash drive micro sd thing, and encode my own videos to watch on it as well as mp3s. So i dont think i would by the one specifically made by nintendo since mine is already legal.

Ummmm yeah, this is just making something that will be hacked and be a licensed product for doing it. When you give access to a system through a standard flash media format... well look at the PSP. And considering Nintendo doesn't really force firmware updates on their system, it's going to be even easier.

Coincidentally, I love this product and hope it comes out here =D.

I love the idea. It might mean good homebrews from the N.
(Alien Hominade should be on the ds damn it.)

I use my R4 mostly for comicbook ds and music. Read more alpha is great for books but maybe nintendo will make a better book reading app.

As for games I mostly pirate games to demo. If i really like a game I'll buy it. It has saved me from buying some games I thought would be good.

Viewing dpg movies is ok. I occasionaly use it to watch tc shows during lunch that i missed the night before. Tonight i got off late so I'll be using it to watch smallville at lunch tommorrow.

This damn sure ain't going to stop piracy it will greatly help it.

1. Download rom
2. Decide if you like the game
3. Buy it
4. Continue playing the rom on your R4.

works for me.

The R4 you say?

Depending on the pricing, I'd be willing to get this, not as a replacement for my R4, to compliment it (as in.. legal)

I have to admit, I have a R4 card for my ds... I got it bundled with a 2gb sandisk for 35 bucks. I would feel bad cept... showing off my DS at work (with all those games on it) convinced 4 other people there to go out and get ds lites.

Now if this had something like a) a bigger card, b)demo-to-buy downloads, and full game time sensitive demos at that. No cut up limited featured BS c) full homebrew app support (love my moonshine) .. then I'll go legal eagle, promise.
