Nintendo announces Calligraphy Training DS for Japan photo

I know most of you guys will bored by this, but bear with me. I'm a huge fanatic for both Japan and the lost art of handwritten correspondence, so I ruined pants when I read about this game this morning. Calligraphy Training DS will come out in Japan on March 13th and offers a handy way for people to practice their Japanese calligraphy skills on the go.

The game appears to have a story mode where you control a wandering warrior in a quest to complete 3099 calligraphy characters successfully. You can also just practice your brush strokes (the game actually comes with a special"brush" stylus) or play in multiplayer mode with up to six other people to see whose brushstroke is the most accomplished.

For the average gamer, this will hurtle past the radar without a second thought, but for Americans trying to learn Japanese this ought to be a real delight to play with. The game's official site has some flash demos up if you want to see more. I'm definitely importing this -- gives me a great excuse to get up off my lazy ass and work harder on learning Japanese!

[Via Modojo - thanks, Jonathan]

I know a ton of people here in the US that would greatly benefit from a handwriting training game in English. Like all of our questionnaire respondents...

Aerox - exactly what I was thinking. I realize Nintendo hasn't saturated 90 million Americans with their little device but surely there's enough profit potential for them to do a localization of an existing product. We'd like a handy tool for learning your god damn language, Japan!

Will a DS from the states play an import DS from Japan? I know next to nothing about this and my girlfriend is studying Japanese and is majoring as a Foreign Language student. I think this would be really great for her, so if somebody can answer that for me, that'd be awesome.

Heh, I agree Atheist, but I was actually referring to a game where you write English letters and it teaches you how not to have unintelligible chicken scratch. The worst part of my job is trying to decipher WTF people wrote down.

looks more like penmanship than calligraphy to me--i want to be able to write in the styles that almost no one can read.

Is there any possible way someone who doesn't know any Japanese would be able to make sense of this? If so, it looks worth a shot.

@NegFactor: DS games are region-free, and will play anywhere.

Isn't this more of "learning the order of strokes" instead of calligraphy, the art of writing where angle of brush and how much the brush is pressed into the paper matters. How would the DS implement that?

BO-RING!

Just kidding, this actually seems like a neat idea, sort of like the foreign language teaching things on the DS.

This seems cool. Way better than writing on countless index cards when I was studying Japanese in college.

Whoa, is this going to be the first game to actually use the DS touchscreen's pressure sensitivity? If so, I've gotta get it.

I think this is just Basic Calligraphy, to get people started(and if it hits the US, to learn the fucking language).

Classes for Calligraphy are expensive where I live, and harsh on rules too, so I'd probably get kicked out if I didn't know what the fuck I was doing.

It seems this will just tell you how to make the symbols, while taking a real class will get you into the artsy-fartsy stuff.

Anyways, I want it.

If they provide enough info on the relation of the kanji to the hiragana and definition, I'd really consider picking this up. My kanji sucks.

This will be really useful for learning to write those pesky Kanji.

If you're in an entry-level Japanese class in middle or high school, ask to learn Kanji as early as possible. It will impress your teacher and guarantee special treatment on all future projects.
