Nintendo announces 3DS release date and pricing photo

And here it is. After months of anticipation, we now know (almost) exactly how much longer we're going to have to wait for the 3DS to be in our hot, little hands. At their press conference tonight, Nintendo has set a release date of February 26th for the release of the new handheld, with a more vague "March" release in Europe and North America.

As for pricing? Nintendo says the device will retail for ¥25000 (roughly $300 US). Yeowch. No information was offered on pricing elsewhere in the world, with Nintendo of Japan stating that the information will be disseminated by their regional offices in the days to come.

I hope it's not $300 in North America, but it would not surprise me in the slightest. They seem to be packing a lot of features into the thing. Would you pay that much to get this sweetness all to yourself?

Of course I'll pay that much. Probably not at launch day, but sometime next year I'll probably get one.

That translates into about £180, but my guess is it'll be a lot more than that.

I'm guessing there'll be an article about this, but hey everybody!

Portable Virtual Console! :'D

I, for one, am highly tempted. I know I'll train on one by Feb I'm sure, but I really want one! I also hope it's, at most, $250 here.

300 isn't so bad. Especially if its going to be packing as many features as it sounds like it will.

I will pay 300, even if it means taking a chubby, I will suck it up.

I'm already saving up. It is a high price, but damn. it looks like it is worth it.

Ouch. $300. The Kid Icarus, Resident Evil and Mario Kart titles have already sold me, regardless of the price. Guess it's time to start a 3DS envelope money saving fund.

I called it. I knew folks were completely delusional for a Nov/Dec release. I figured they'd go for March at the earliest. I'm not surprised by the price either. I wonder if the 3DS will fall victim to some of the problems the PSP had, already there are way more ports of older games than new stuff. I'm looking forward to the 3DS but I can wait for the 3DS lite or 3DS XXL Lugia Jr. edition.

Seems a bit steep, I was thinking more like $249.

I mean it seems a bit silly for it to cost more than a Wii and as much as a 360 elite or PS3.

...but I guess that's the average entry point for the iPod touch right? Nobody buys the $229 model do they?

I want it very much, but that just isn't a doable price for me. I will have to wait on a price drop. A portable anything, be it a phone, mp3 player or whatever just isn't worth $300 to me, but I'm sure to a lot of people it will be. Now, $200....maybe.

$250 is my max. I won't spend $300 on am HD console, much less a handheld.

Sorry Nintendo. I have a tuition and bills. And food. And a shitty college freshman income.

Well the PSP Go sells for $250 here in North America, but it launched in Japan for ¥26,800 ($295) a year ago. So I'm guessing that it will probably be a similar situation for the 3DS, where its ¥25,000 ($298) in Japan, but only $250 here in North America. One can hope at least!

I'm thinking this will not be region free, unfortunately, due to the massive anti-piracy kick Nintendo is on. I hope we do actually get these at work for training...I just realized they could just as easily give us packets...It's never really happened like that in the past(We did a class for the pedometer), but it may just end up that way...

Guys, it will be 250 in US, maybe even 230. We always get stuff cheaper and the Wii was 25000 yen and ended up costing $250.

@Royal Swan: Same here on calling it. Was talking to my friend earlier this year when it "leaked" and had to get official announced overnight. He has a fat, said he was probably gonna upgrade within the week but decided to wait for the 3DS since he was convinced it was going to come out this year. Looks like he has to suffer ~6 more months.

Yeah, I bet it comes out in the US for 250, max. Still, even if it is closer to 300 here, there's a lot of value in that package. I'm excited.

If they had released the 3DS in Nov/Dec, it would've been a bloodbath due to the oncoming holidays. Mind you it's gonna be insane in Feb/March too, but there isn't the pressure Christmas puts on you (at least on this side of the globe).

A bit steep, but the PSP was launched with more or less that price (around 25000 yen) so it's not mind boggling either.

Well, par for the course (I had in my mind a March release for some reason). Historically, prices have been higher in JP than the west so I wouldn't be surprised if it was as low as $250.

Right now I want to see it in action more than anything, and if all goes well the desire to own one would follow.

Will wait on a more solid price. Unless I work plenty of OT around that time, I don't know if i can squander that much. Consider taxes and a game or two on top of $300, and it's more like $4-425.

As Royal Swan mentioned, I fear the possibility of a 3DS Lite or 3DSiXL(Lol)... I enjoy the improvements that each system has made throughout the non-3D line of DS systems, but if the price doesn't budge from $300, it'll be a painful blow to experience the slow upgrade curve.

I can already hear parents nation wide wanting free repairs on their $300 3DS that little Billy dropped in the driveway or let the baby drool on. I've actually had people call in for a repair on a DS Lite that was "owned" by an 18 month old! WTF! If you don't want to continue paying $60 to $85 every 3-6 months for repairs to the electric babysitter, maybe you should stop buying multi-hundred dollar toys for them between ages 0-10. Sorry for the rant. :)

Holy shit, $300? I won't pay that for a full fledged console. I'll be damned if you'll find me paying that for a handheld, regardless of it's features. If I'm paying that kind of cash for a handheld, I damn well better be walking away with 3 or 4 games to play on it.

How much are the games going to cost? $40? $50? I'm sorry, but that's just not doable for me. 3D or no.

I'm sorry but that is more than an HD console costs and it's a little ridiculous. Nintendo doesn't need to make mad profit out of the gate. These things are going to sell so well the development prices are going to drop quickly and they could easily stand to lose a little change with it. They lost my early adopter sale unless it comes with a game, some nintendo points, and the promise that they won't release a f**king redesign later that week.

Great handheld or not, $300 bucks for a 3DS that will eventually churn out into the 3DS Lite?

Fuck. That.

I'm going to wait until then to be interested, I have learned my mistakes from the 360/PS3 Slim, multiple PSP reiterations and Iphone disasters.

Sorry Nintendo, I messed up before but even with Ocarina of Time, I just have to draw the line. Besides, I'm sure with the huge AAA games coming out in 2011/2012, I'll be too busy to be worried.

I would be willing to get it when it came down to $199. There is no way in hell I would pay more than that. Also, by the time it actually dropped to that price, there would likely be a slim or otherwise improved upon version.

$300 is pretty hard to stomache for a handheld.. wow.

So, holy shit, they're going to try and sell a handheld for 1.5x the price of their mainstream, current-gen console. Something about that sounds wrong to me.

Show me $250, I'll consider it. $200 and I'm sold. Hell, at $200 I'll still spend $300, I'll just do it buying Kid Icarus and Mega Man.

If its $300 USD then in Australia its going to be a bit more and i have no problem with that, i'm surprised people are complaining about this have you seen the 3DS? Nintendo needs to make a profit $300 USD is definitely reasonable.
