Nintendo and Sony: what could have been photo

You can consider this photo (if indeed real) a turning point in videogame history of disastrous proportions. Remember when Nintendo and Sony were holding hands, and doing even more behind the scenes concerning a joint console that never saw the light of day? Well if you somehow forgot, allow me to refresh your memory a bit. The year was 1989, and it was the day that Hiroshi Yamauchi was to announce to the world that Sony and Nintendo would be working together on a project to bring a CD-ROM add-on to the Super NES.

Unfortunately for Sony, Yamauchi had just read over the previous legal agreement and was stunned to see that it basically called for Nintendo to relinquish all control over any titles written on the SNESCD-ROM format. It wasn't long after this that the contract with Sony was canceled, and it was the surprise of the century -- even to Sony -- when it was announced at CES that it was now Phillips Electronics that would be working with Nintendo.

Fast forward a few years later to 1995, and it is obvious that Sony is the clear winner on the failed deal when it releases the original PlayStation to much applause. The PlayStation brand would secure two generations of gaming consoles as the clear cut winner, while the Phillips CD-i (with a few Nintendo spin-offs of its own) was but a distant memory.

Nintendo managed to survive (they are experts at remaining profitable), but found itself in the unfamiliar position of not being the market leader any more. It could be argued that they never truly recovered until recently, thanks to the DS and Wii. The rest, as they say, is water under the bridge. However, take another look at the picture and think about what could have been if Nintendo had not backed out of the deal on that fateful day.

Would Sony and Nintendo have ruled the console market together, or would the relationship have self-destructed over time regardless, considering how starkly different the two companies view the videogame market? One thing is certain ... the videogame landscape might very well be a lot different than it is now.

[Thanks MJK and D

I never really thought about it before, but it is an interesting thing to think about. Would Microsoft have even attempted to make a game system? Would they have gone ahead with the Wii? Will Cassandra really tell Luke that he is the father? And what about Riley? Will Riley do something? Something risque or thrilling? Who the fuck are these people I'm talking about? Tune in next week for the next exciting episode of Dragonball Z...yugioh..

I've been thinking about the whole Microsoft angle as well. Something tells me they still would have entered the mix, but how would this have affected the timing and ideas behind the Xbox?

@free_touch

Believe me, I do my best. However, we can't catch everything. Why didn't you send us a tip? I would have gladly added your name to the post, like I did the guy who sent me the tip.

Sorry :-(

Shouldn't it say 'Nintendo' somewhere on it?

It says SuperFamicom on it. Close enough.

I swear I read this issue of Marvel's What If? before. Uatu the Watcher says it lead directly to World War 3 and caused pancakes to be called "cakepans"

"but it is an interesting thing to think about."

I agree. It's a great wonder... right up there with "What if LucasArts had never made Masters of Teras Kasi or if Sega had popped the Dreamcast out sooner.

More on topic, one of the best benefits would be MGS4 for PSWii!

I'm guessing that Sony and Nintendo will come back together after this console generation. They both want to beat Microsoft into total submission and get them out of the market. The PSWii would do that.

I don't think it would have had a very positive impact on the gaming market as a whole really... While the early games would probably have been bitchin' (yes... bitchin'), it would have probably caused the market to stagnate. Sony and Nintendo wouldn't have been giving each other any competition. Coupling this with Sega's exit from the hardware biz (assuming that still occurred with the Dreamcast launch), that would've left only the SNES-CD.
Sure, Microsoft could've still come along and shaken things up, but the monopoly that the Sony-Nintendo console held on the market would have likely caused them to focus on the PC gaming market, if they took an interest in gaming at all.

In short children, monopolies are bad, mmmkay?

Do we really need to wonder what a CD add-on would've done for a 16-bit system? The real question is whether Sewer Shark would've had as amazing controls with the SNES controller.

I always felt that Nintendo Helped create the Playstation whith this little maneuver.

I also believe that It was Sony who spurred the Xbox into existance by claiming that the PS2 with it's CD, DVD and games comptability would take center stage in the home entertainment setup, replacing even the PC. My guess is Microsoft had a reaction to that last bit.
