Nintendo and Greenpeace are still not BFF photo

One would think that after all the negative press Nintendo got for scoring a 0 out of a possible 10 on Greenpeace's Scale of Greenitude (note: not official name) in 2007 they might be more willing to release the information Greenpeace looks for when judging companies. However, once again they've scored a zero on seven of the eleven points Greenpeace checks for when ranking Greenitude (note: still not an offical word) all because they don't release or keep track of that info. According to Greenpeace's Guide To Greener Electronics (that's official) Nintendo has only moved up to a score of .8. That's well lower than Microsoft's 2.8 and Sony's relatively impressive 5.5.

Again, the low score is mostly because of the lack of information, but Greenpeace does note a few other causes. The guide states that Nintendo "has banned phthalates and is monitoring use of antimony and beryllium and although it is endeavouring to eliminate the use of PVC, it has not set a timeline for its phase out." Following that up with, "Nintendo discloses carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from its own operations and commits to cutting CO2emissions and other greenhouse gases by 2% over each previous year. However, Nintendo admits that an increase in business led to a 6% rise in CO2 emissions in 2006."

This puts Nintendo in last place behind every major electronics company out there. One wonders what the point of not releasing the information Greenpeace wants is or at least starting to keep track of it. It doesn't get much worse then .8, unless the data reveals that for every Wii made a baby seal is covered in oil and beaten with a club.

Greenitude? All Nintendo wants is money, doesn't give a shit about Greenpeace. I don't think many businesses give a rats ass about an pro-green quasi-terrorist organization. Capitalism at its finest.

It is very bad that I saw that baby seal and instinctively thought, "It's clubbing time."

Funnily enough, greenpeace actually gets a 0/10 on my 'Totally not hypocritical assholes' scale.

Co2 is overrated as a greenhouse gas, they should make sure there's less toxic waste disturbing our clean air and water supply, first and foremost. Also, wiimotes should have come with rechargable batteries, no? Correct me if I am wrong but they don't come in rechargable form, as far as I've seen on the net. Selling gazillions of controllers with non-rechargable batteries should take the cake for ruining environments.

Grenpeace should kill themselves for being relative emissors of CO2.

I consider myself a rather standard hardcore game consumer and the fact that Nintendo doesn't keep track of its environmental stats doesn't bother me at all and if their consumer base doesn't care then it doesn't matter. Seriously, what can Greenpeace do? Organise a boycott among people that don't play videogames in the first place?

People still care about Greenpeace? I thought they were just a "hip clothes" label now. You know, the ones that rich fucks buy and drive home on their SUVs thinking how fucking great persons they are for helping the environment.

@ Harris Hatsworth,
The problem isn;t Nintendo keeping track of its environmental stats but not give greenpeace, a worn out group that no one cares about, info they demand.

Anyone who has played Super Mario Sunshine knows Ninty is against the environment. Mario was cleaning up Delfino Plaza and pushing all the pollutants right into the water table.

Hm...I find it ironic that I'm both an Environmental studies major and a Nintendo enthusiast. But, eh whaddayagonado?

Does anybody actually care about the score Greenpeace hands out? Is the point of the score keeping supposed to shame companies or something? I don't know about you guys, but I think Nintendo intentionally tries to get a flat zero on the greenpeace score, just so they can piss off environmentalists.

I think they are more than justified in awarding the scores.... the report is not just fluff. It outlines key areas of improvement and scaling for these companies.

If it weren't for groups like Greenpeace doing this sort of thing for decades.... we'd all be a lot worse off right now.

Nintendo and MS need to learn that Wireless devices need to be rechargable.
It's kind of a no brainer.

Not pooing out dead batteries every few hours is a sure way to minimize waste.

But then again, I know, I know, the recharger packs are another nice little stealthy revenue stream, and if you included rechargable controllers, then you would have to charge a little more and lose a bit of the "CHEAP" sales line.

Capitalism loves the planet. Wouldn't be surprised if MS at least had some "under-the-table" deal with Duracell.

Dammit Dtoid, do you know how close i came to reflexively clubbing my computer monitor? The Cdn seal clubbing genes in me and nearly took over and then it would have been a 'Hulk Smash'! day.

In other news, a seal walked into a club and .... *rimshot*

Greenpeace is no longer the Greenpeace of the past.

They go hand and hand with PETA, bunch of nut jobs that put the mental in environmentalist. Look our planet has problems, but Greenpeace is not the answer.

Greenpeace is an organization full of loons! I hope Nintendo makes a Baby seal bashing game where you see how many baby seals you can kill in various ways.
Greenpeace should be banned themselves and locked up. They are a danger to others and themselves and that is enough justification to put them away right there.
I'm all in favor of companies being responsible, but Greenpeace goes too far. They are pretty much a cult at this point worshipping trees and fish and seals.

Well...
Some of Greenpeace's priorities I am all for...
Dismantling nuclear weapons and creating more renewable energy sources (windmills or solar power) to name two...
However, the importance of how much of a consoles ecological footprint is made doesn't concern me...
I'm sure that can be said by millions of people...

No one cares if their console isn't as economically friendly as another console...
A very small percentage of people would base their purchase on a consoles ecological footprint...

However, the information is a rather curious little fun fact...
