Nintendo admits public are idiots, recalls Wii remote strap photo

So it all comes down to this.

After a few weeks of various reports of slippery handed slug creatures tossing their Wii remotes into everything from their televisions to their hamsters, Nintendo will be replacing the "faulty" straps. Free of charge of course for consumers. Nintendo on the other hand will spend several million dollars on the recall. Ouch.

Getting a replacement is easy enough -- Nintendo has set up an online request form that requires your shipping info and Wii serial numbers.

Personally, I'm too lazy to get up to see what my serial number is on my Wii, so I'm going to pass on this one. But for everyone who wants to hit Nintendo in the wallet because you think there's a chance you're also slightly retarded (and might fling a controller across a room), here's your chance.

Stick it to the man.

(Thanks to everyone who sent this tip in. We love you.)

Heh, I guess this is nice to hear. But much like Nick, I'm way too lazy to check my serial number.

Agreed, my laziness is quite a factor in not getting a replacement strap. That, and my lack of retardedness when playing the Wii.

My Wii box happened to be within arm's reach so I placed an order. While I don't have issues holding onto the remote, I can't be so sure that everyone else that plays will do the same. Plus I haven't played while completely hammered yet. Better safe than sorry.

I feel Nintendo owes me another wrist strap anyway since the DS Lite didn't come with one and I didn't keep my strap when I traded in the DS Phat (I assumed the Lite would come with one).

So the thin strap will go on my Lite and the new strap will go on the Wiimote.

By the way, when is Nintendo going to start calling it the Wiimote? Everyone else already does...

The strap is just a minor issue, what worries me is that apparently that pokemon game will have friendcodes different from those on the Wii.

I never knew about that. Yeah, I guess they can't call it a Wiimote then.

I ordered a couple just in case a neice or a drunken brother-in-law gets crazy with it.

And Weemote... Who knew?

Apparently, Nintendo has proper-usage marketing documents that they've sent out and that they dictate the usage of "Wii Remote" among their marketing partners (i.e. anyone selling their console and accessories). So says some commenter over at game|life, anyway.

Nintendo really has nothing to worry about here. They've sold around a million wiis so far. Each one of those is making them around $30 of pure profit. Wrist straps, in mass production, probably cost a couple of cent, plus cheap bulk postage... It's not really going to dent them financially.
That's not even mentioning games and accessories sold, or the DS...

I will be ordering 2 to replace the one strap broken by a friend playing tennis and another just in case. Good looking on the heads up cause playing without a strap is kinda weird, I like how it keeps my wrist warm :P

I think people who break their straps are mildly retarded and don't read instructions.

Just a point of clarification: No matter what the Associated Press is telling you, this is NOT a recall. Chris Kohler explains it better:

A recall by definition require you to bring a product in for fixing. This is sending out replacement straps, so just a tad different.

Anyway, I ordered four straps for my four remotes. I had one snap on bowling and although no one or thing was damaged by a flying Remote, I don't want to take any chances again. Those remotes were just too hard to come by. And yes, the person playing was new to Wii, overly into it, and had sweaty hands so it just slipped out unintentionally.

I was just at Gamestop last night to buy a new remote because the guy told me they just got a shipment in, but the strap is the original thin one. Of course they have to go through back stock before they send out new ones, or this one was just sitting in a warehouse for the last month, but I decided better safe than sorry with my idiot friends and ordered thick straps.
