Nintendo: 3DS price will 'fit' with current DS structure photo

Nintendo has remained coy on the eventual price for a 3DS, but at least one UK spokesman has suggested that the price will be very reasonable indeed. According to UK marketing manager James Honeywell, the price should fall in line with expectations based off previous system iterations.

"We haven't made any kind of announcement at the moment, but the Nintendo DSi is available for around £129.99. The Nintendo DSi XL, with the larger screens, is around £159.99," he explains. "So obviously, it's going to fit, kind of, somewhere within that kind of architecture."

This hint certainly falls in line with the predicted $250 price point that analysts have been predicting. Nintendo's approach to the handheld market isn't (thankfully) the same as Sony's, so hopefully this will be a device we're more than happy to spend the bones on.

I'd be surprised if it's more than $200; regardless, it's a given this thing is going to "print money," as they say. I don't think I'd pay more than $250, though.

250$ a bit of a stretch, and I'd wait a bit before diving in on that price.

Honestly though, I see the $250 being some sort of bundle, while $200 is just the 3DS itself.

if the DSi XL is $160, the 3DS will probably be around 200 dollars, I think.

Yeah, I'm with Daxelman. 250$ is too much for a handheld for me, so I'll probably wait a bit as well. Not sure if I'll be capable of doing so :(.

It is going to be $200.

People are just brainwashed. The DSi cost MORE than the DS phat did at launch 5 years before it. I'll bet the DS lite costs about $30 to make at this point, and the DSi about $50. The 3DS probably will cost $170 to make, and they will sell it at $200.

The leap in processing power from GBA to DS was about the same as DS to 3DS, maybe even more.

At $250, that sounds reasonable, but of course $199 would be great. If Nintendo could get it in, at that price. I can see Nintendo announcing a price drop for the DS line this September by putting the Lite at $99, the DSi at $139, and the DSi XL at $159. It would be a $30 price drop for all current DS's and could effectively clear out all Lite from the market.

That would only leave the DSi/XL and the 3DS available for purchase by next year. That would give Nintendo enough room to put the 3DS at $199, or maybe go as high as $229. That would make the PSP go look like even more garbage, then it already is, if Sony still continues to keep it at $250. Talk about a rip-off, at least the 3DS at $250, would be worth it!

$250 would be tolerable, but $200 would be amazing. I'd probably hug the Gamestop employees and send Nintendo a love letter, at that price.

I'd pay $250 if Nintendo guaranteed I'd have it for at least two years before they start selling a new-and-improved model in a year or two. I still haven't gotten over GBA "you can see shit on this one" SP.

at $250, i think that only the "first adopter" crowd is going to bite. i really don't see that meshing with nintendo's strategy this gen. they're going to set this thing up as the next hottest system. think wii launch, with hours waiting in line. to make that sort of demand happen, they'll need to keep the price down. no way can they get that sort of must have, rabid consumerism with a pricepoint that rivals the wii. with that in mind, i'm expecting a pricepoint between $200-$220. of course, they could do an across the board price cut on ds hardware in concert with the release of 3ds. this could bring down the msrp on the 3ds, and would be a bit of a double whammy for the market. let's hope this is the case, because i'm not looking forward to dropping $250 on a handheld, no matter how awesome.

I spent $250 on the epic failure that was the PSP when it launched with less features than the 3DS has so I would most definitely get this for $250. I would love if it was $199 and under though.

Also, I have 2 friends buying one at launch as well so I can eBay them for $$$ Mwuahahah. I only wish I knew the Wii was going to be as successful as it was. I wouldve made a killing on my launch Wii.

I would love to see this thing go for $200.00, but my gut instinct tells me that would be too good to be true. My guess is somewhere around $229.95-$250.00.

I guess it all really depends on what kind of internal storage the device has. If the rumors of installing games on the device itself are true, then lets say it has like a 20GB flash drive. If that's the case, then there's no way its going to be $199, when Sony is charging $250 for a system with only 16GB of storage. Nintendo wouldn't just leave all that free money, on the table!

I think the prices that you guys are guessing are interesting.

A parallax barrier costs about $20. The computing side of the hardware is components that cost less than the Wii did 5 years ago. The motion controls are probably Wii-mote with motionplus level, but without the infrared camera. The whole thing could probably be sold for $150 without a problem.

But the prices you guys are guessing tells me you all think it's worth well over $150, without doubt.

I wouldn't expect the price to be particularly high, but I wouldn't expect it to drop even a cent in less than 4 years. First party Nintendo never drops the prices of it's software, and rarely drops the price of it's hardware. I don't think the DS had a price cut in two years with the DSi and DSi XL still at their original prices, and we're within months of it's successor.

I think we also have to keep in mind though that the wii is 200 dollars now. Would Nintendo want their handheld device to cost more than the console?

maybe I missed that happen in history already, but it seems illogical.

I could see a customer in the store being like "well I could get this tiny thing for my child for $250, or I could buy this very popular home console for the entire family for $200. Wii it is!"

Hey "Genius", Sony called, the check is in the mail.

I actually own one of these things and have been first-hand witness to its shittiness and lacklusterness(trademark). Just because a lot of people bought something, doesn't make it good. Just look at Glee/American Idol/Twilight.

But I'm glad you got butt-hurt by my opinion. Makes my ego glad to know someone cares so much about what *I* think. This must be what Jim Sterling feels every day times a million.

@Rammstein,

"But I'm glad you got butt-hurt by my opinion. "

What a moronic thing to say. First of all, anyone that says "butt-hurt" should have their opinions become null and void. But secondly, to think that you had any effect on Genius other then making him laugh is presumptuous on your part, and most likely incorrect.

Pointing out your faulty logic does not equate to giving a shit about you in anyway what so ever.

Case in point. I wrote this and I don't give a fuck what you think. I just know you're kind of a prick everytime I see your name.

Anyone claiming that $200 is their limit would totally slap down $219.99. No one is going to let $20 stop them from something as potentially awesome as this!

That being said, my bet is it'll be $219.99 because that falls in line with their current pricing structure.

I would be very surprised if this came out at more than $200.

Also, by the time of launch, that figure would fit in nicely to their "pricing scheme" with the DS Lite at around $110, the DSi at around $140, and the DSi XL at around $150-160.

Nintendo wouldn't just throw away the pricing structure that has made them SHIT TONS of money over the past decade in order to bring out a cutting edge handheld at a high price.

I also can't imagine this system costing Nintendo more than $200 to make. The PSP probably costs Sony about $100 to make, so the extra $100 for the 3DS would go towards the 3D tech and a little bit more graphical power.

By this logic, Nintendo will probably release their new handheld with a very slim profit margin for them (ANY profit on launch hardware is great for a game company) and then really start making bank once the component costs go down.

$250 would completely trash Nintendo's cheap and cheerful model they've had for handhelds since they jumped into the portable games market.

Though, it's not too surprising considering the XL and the DSi's hefty price. It certainly would be harder for a lot of people to stomach spending $250.

Nobody is attacking you for having independent thought. Don't be so melodramatic. One person pointed out that they don't think the PSP is an epic failure. Fuck dude, I have never and will never own a PSP. We actually agree. Which goes to show how badly you're missing the point.

I don't care if you hate all video games. Shit, you can even hate the entirety of Earth and all of its contents. But it's the way you present your opinion in every single thread that I like to highlight and make fun of. You're a caricature. I can't help that I find that funny.

I'm going to agree with Rammstein's original comment. I remember myself and my roommate coming home on PSP launch day with 2 shiny new PSP's and about $350 lighter in our wallets, and 6 months later I still had the same two games that I brought it home with (Lumines and Riiiiiiiiidge Racer). I like my PSP now, but back then I deeply regretted buying it so early. The software was pure fail for a long time. What we've seen from the 3DS so far is already beyond what the PSP had to offer for it's first year.

So yeah, a $250 3DS would be worth it, for me (though obviously I'm hoping for it to be cheaper). I don't see what was so terrible about Rammstein's point, he was just sharing his experience.

Yeah, I'm banking on a $199.99 price point with maybe some free downloadable 3D movie trailers to give people an extra incentive to get used to connecting to Nintendo's Wi-Fi servers. It sounds like they're trying to push the connectivity a bit more with this one.
