Sony might be loading its hype cannons with all sorts of 3D promises, but at least one developer is skeptical of the PS3's ability to provide decent three-dimensional visuals. That developer is Ninja Theory, explaining that the PS3 lacks the processing power required to impress our eyes.
"The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye. And at least a 720p resolution [per eye]," states co-founder Tameem Antoniades. "So in essence that's 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second, and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec.
"I think the technology's limited now, so you won't be able to play stuff that looks like Avatar -- the movie -- in 3D. Every generation has to be at least five-to-ten times more powerful than the last, so I think we'll get there in the next generation. I think that will be totally revolutionary for games."
So, if you're expecting to feel as if you're really nestling between Solid Snake's arsecheeks or that Nathan Drake could literally slap you in the face with his scrotal scrapings, I'm afraid you're out of luck. At least, that's according to this guy.
PS3 3D will be 'limited', say Heavenly Sword dev [CVG]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
So in short: PS3 will have 3D movie support, limited 3D game support, only from to the games that are designed for 3D or fit well with the tech. Hasn't there been a very good playable version of Wipeout HD with 3D? That is a good game for 3D, uncharted and GoW3? Think not.
Made my day, lol.
How?
People said the same things about color televisions.
I can see you think 3D won't be a big thing, but the technology has to move forwards, because LCD/LED or even OLED TVs aren't the last step. So every little step away from the ordinary is a little revolution.
I myself just think more powerful machines will be 'revolutionary' for the gaming business, but not for the technology itself.
There will likely be sets just like the IMAX ones that ship with production models. Big, goggle esque deals that you can wear glasses underneath. The ones that look like glasses that we see in all the marketing are probably more expensive, but they do demos with them because they look less ridiculous and make better PR images than a big ass pair of goggles.
No it doesn't.
You need 120HZ (that's why you need 60fps for each eye) to achieve 3D.
It's not that I don't think 3D will be a big thing, the opposite in fact and I am fully willing to embrace it. Indeed, it is the next natural step towards the ultimate goal of simulation/video games - virtual reality. I'm just really unsure how this step is going to be 'revolutionary' to how we play games. You mention 'little revolution[s]', I would just call that progress. When a developer tells me that something is going to be revolutionary they better fucking mean it, yet I have seen no real evidence - or even any decent speculation - as to how 3D displays will be a revolution in games.
Another not: I use the term virtual reality as one of convenience and because I have yet to decide on/see anyone else come up with a better term for what I am trying to describe (if there is in fact one).
This article hurts my head more than wearing those shitty glasses.
Also, is it just me or does Ninja Theory REALLY hate the PS3?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
YEAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I really think that God of war will be 3D capable, because too much scene was like ( made of 3D ). Like the intro, titan fight and flight moment.
Their some rumours of Killzone 3 will be 3D capable, too ( seen here or kotaku ).
But i would NOT buy a tv for this, but it look cool. GT 5 3D would be soooooooooo nice. 2000$ is not nice.
So Sony had something early that benefitted the user, but not themselves (at least in the short term as they bled money for it).
You look at their arcade offerings compared to Xbox. Things like Flower, Flow and PixelJunk stuff. Some truly weird things, but attempting to be more than another Double Dragon.
Oh, they have those too. Point is they have both. I can't imagine Flower was a huge seller. Yet it's there for people into something a bit different.
Make sense from a pure money making perspective? Not really. If they were purely going for the cash, Flower is the opposite of that goal.
And then there's the PSPgo, which it feels like, looking at threads at Destructoid anyway, most don't get it. Why it's even out and Sony must be completely stupid.
Here we have a handheld capable of doing much more than just games which makes them less profit than if they stripped the hardware and features down to ONLY playing games.
And Go is a deluxe model for people who have early adopted into the digital only world that will be more mainstream in about five to ten years.
But your old PSP works fine. The Go is just the Elite version for the digitally embraced.
So again, Go isn't exactly the mainstream Nintendo DS, but the consumer who can afford it, it's a quality product. (Although I agree it's priced too high.)
3D gaming, all developers seem to think it'll be huge and a regular thing in the next five to ten years. Here comes Sony yet again to lead an early charge first giving you an option to play a game with it. Or without.
Killzone 2 comes in both versions, for example. It's not like getting an avatar, where Sony has thrown in something at you that you have to take whether you want to or not.
Even their new motion thing won't take over games, it'll be an optional feature or games specifically for it. They aren't stopping making the tradional games.
And yet it's all moans and groans for both 3D and the wand, despite the fact nearly no one in the threads has played or used either one.
I'm not saying Sony are saints who never do wrong. But I am saying that here you have a corporation, moreso than Microsoft or Nintendo, that actually adds things of high quality to gamers even when it's risky profit-wise.
Yes, they want your money, just like the other two. But they continue to show more of an actual support and appreciation to gamers and games themselves than the other two (Microsoft ever and Nintendo in the Wii-years).
I guess I'm just in a certain mood. I'm all for attacking when corporations do rotten things. But in this case, Sony does things that either benefit the gamer with more choices that they can just as easily ignore and they get put down for it.
Really, isn't the corporations bothering and trying to give you more something you want to encourage? Or should we all just sit in place with what we have?
Attack Sony for the many wrongs things they do every so often. But implementing features and possibly (we won't know till the end of the year) improving on them and simply getting put down for it?
You are gamers, right? Because it seems like it'd be better for all of us who are on the playing end of the industry if all the corporations would keep trying to improve and evolve, even if they stumble here and there.
That should be ENCOURAGED, not condemned.
since the PS3 is the only system to do true 1080P
sony had 3D telivisions two years ago that didn't need the special shutter glases and just used the glasses that theaters used.
I think the ps3 3d will certainly be watered-down somehow, but next-gen will be glasses-less (lol) HD 3d, and it will be glorious.
Hence the "ADD COMMENT" button.
FFFFFFFUUUUUUU
Well said. And I tend to agree with you. I've often wondered how real actual gamers can be so destructive, verbally, about their favorite hobby. Every generation of gamers so far (as few as there's been) are always afraid of change. I guess they forget they still have their old games that they can play anytime they want.
@ Corduroy Turtle,
At least this guy actually added a decent comment. What have you ever contributed other then hate, insults, or sarcasm?
I love how 1251 is all supportive though, since what he said was in defense of Sony. That may be the nicest thing I've ever seen him post.
You would think with all that HD in the PS3 Sony would see how pointless 3D is from a mass market consumer perspective.
This is a really good point, I think. I'm certainly intrigued by the idea of 3D, but I wonder if the mass market is even close to being there yet.
I know someone has to do it first. But maybe now's not quite the time. Maybe the "next" gen?
The crappy Wiimote and this crappy 3D 'tech' will leave a horrible imprint in all of our minds, so when the time comes, when this stuff actually works at reasonible prices. Most won't take.
