Ninja Theory got death threats over DmC: Devil May Cry photo

Just when you think gamer melodrama has peaked, something comes out of the woodwork to knock our community down another ten pegs. Ninja Theory's Tameem Antoniades has revealed that some gamers were so distraught over their development of DmC: Devil May Cry that they sent in death threats. How classy.

"Alex Garland warned me about it because he experienced a similar thing with 28 Days Later where people were upset that it didn’t feature real zombies. And now with his upcoming Dredd movie,” he revealed. "So I was half prepared for it, although I have to say that it has been pretty eye opening to see some of the creative ways in which people have chosen to vent their hatred. We didn’t expect death threats in comic book form or anti-DmC death metal songs!

"It’s pretty hard for me to back the decisions we made without showing actual gameplay to the public. So until that time comes, and it will come soon, I just have to put up with the rage. Though I must say, lots of people have come and said that they are now interested in DmC whereas they had previously lost interest in the series. We’ll see how this plays out."

The rage over DmC has been utterly pathetic. While I don't begrudge anybody the opportunity to be concerned about it, the sheer depths of lunacy that some people have sunk to are shocking, to say the very least. This level of outrage would be stupid even if these nutters had played the game, but it's not even out yet.

And we wonder why gamers are still portrayed as psychopathic manchildren on TV!

No, simply no. There is NO excuse for death threats. I don't care what your stance is about this game. Death Threats is not the way to "protest" a game. It's no laughing matter.

It's like people think they are owed a certain type of game. News flash fuckers: unless you're making the game yourself you have no reasonable right to demand or expect anything about that game creatively.

You can vote with you bucks and not purchase a game of you don't like the changes made or the direction taken, but that's the extent of your role in the process. If SEGA decided tomorrow that from this day forward Sonic is going to be a transvestite aardvark with an Uzi and an exagerated pimp wall who throws headless kitten grenades and foghts wave after wave of faoling mouthed, rabid , swearing, kilted scottsman to save the kindom of bumfuck from their han fisted rule, you have no say so beyond voting with our bucks.

Deal with it, and drop the drama queen bullshit. It's a fuking hobby, not life or death, and it's not the end of the company, the world, or the universe if they don't have your god damn approval about what color a ficticous characters hair is.

2 massively ridiculous 'controversies', both relating to the Devil May Cry series. The 'don't make DMC4 multi-format' controversy was hilarious, this is just moronic.

It's Metal Gear Solid 4 all over again, except there Kojima caved in rather than what Ninja Theory is doing here. *sigh* Gamers man, we should just kill them.

Murderous rage over the redesign of a protagonist who in my honest opinion looked like MORE of a tool before said redesign? First world problems. I would like to hope the slugs in question were your expected 12 year old fanboys whos nonfunctional balls are the source of all their butthurt. Unfortunately, it's probably a grown man who, likely suffering from butthurt from similar reason.

how many death threats are we talking about? seriously. 3? 10? 100?

Every collective is bound to contain idiots and sociopaths, I don't remember taking a mental competency test when I bought my last console. They just sell them to anyone, should I be demonized because some idiot did what idiots do? meh, nothing to see here

Thing that always got me about all this is that people got bent out of shape over Dante, who earned his name on saying unintentionally funny things and has never had that interesting of a story.

He is an game action hero, his brand of gameplay is far more important than the character itself.

Also, in before the stupid "first world problems" meme - oh wait.

While I appreciate people being upset and concerned about this game for the right reasons (totally unnecessary reboot, cheap publicity stunt, etc), there's absolutely no excuse to start putting out death threats to people who are still trying to do this job.

The game still looks like shit though.

I wonder what people would do if Master Chief wore a My Little Pony themed armor in Halo 4.

It's not pathetic. DMC was a game where you could play as a cocky, know-it-all, loud mouth teenager-demon, who carried a sword big enough to match Jim Sterling's ego.

People escape into games to pretend they are someone else. Someone cool, or cooler than yourself. Why would i want to play a game where 'i' play as a scrawny kid who looks like a crack addict? Agh...i wish this reboot trend would just die out already.

Also, a 90's MLP Tales themed armor for MC in Halo 4 would make me buy the game.

Honestly ninja theory deserve to die, I just saw the gameplay footage and it looks way too fucking slow, like assassins creed slow, it's ridiculous and why the fuck did capcom hand this game to a studio with no experience in fast paced games with characters that don't look like suicidal emos we shall never know

Still don't see this as a Devil May Cry game, but whatever, not a huge fan of the series anyway.

Death threats? Over a GAME? For fucks sake, some people need to check their priorities. If you don't like the look of the new game either look the other way and get into something new or just do what I do with something I don't like happens in a series/franchise I enjoy - declare it non-cannon and move on. i.e. Star Wars prequels - non-cannon! Ah, sweet rage cleansing.

I understand people getting pissy over a ICONIC character being changed so much (heck newest video confirms the whole background of the character so i not visual change it full change). Death threats too far but i understand NT will play this up as much as they want, they must know NT might be in trouble if the game bombs

If people put an ounce of this creativity and effort into something meaningful, say like getting SOPA blocked, then perhaps we wouldn't have to worry so much. But no, instead they send death threats to a great developer about a fictitious character who has never done anything on a personal level for anyone. You know, because he's not real.

I was also concerned as dmc has been one of my all time favorite franchises. Not based on looks, it is the gameplay. The recent vids of this reboot have given me a more hopeful view of this, but I still need to play it. I'm worried NT won't be able to deliver the action/speed/craziness I expect. At least if it sucks we have hd collection coming. That being said, Wtf people? Death threats? Over a game design? Some peoples kids......should be killed. Clean up the gene pool, we got turds floating.

Man, this post is funny. "Death Threats? We should kill those people because they send rude letters!"

The fact is though, this game looks like complete dogshit, on a gameplay level. Not death threat/homophobic remarks from YouTubers(which isn't just gamers but people in general, just to stop the thread of self-hating we got going on here), but honest crictism regarding the videos. The animation transitions, the airtime, the whip, the camera, the framerate, its all inferior to DMC3 and even DMC4. Its a step back for the series, and I think DMC fans have a right to be angry.

But oh no, you're emotionally angry about a video game, what a big anti-social baby you are. Kinda reminds me of the weekly reaction to Jim Sterling's name around the internet. The phrase "fat, whiny manchild" gets thrown around a LOT. No wonder TV portrays us as psychopathic manchildren, derr herr

I wouldn't worry about any threats being acted upon. They'd have to stop fucking their body pillows and their adult onset diabetes really hampers their physicality...also, the exhausted, mouth-breathing would give away the would-be assassin's position immediately.

What I'm trying to say is, 9/11 was an inside job.

Sounds to me like these people should relate more to the new super emo version of the character. Then again I never had interest in the originals because Dante looked a bit too sassy for my liking. I'm looking forward to seeing that they make I really like Ninja Theory and how they go about things. Change, embrace it you cowards.

@ninja: wait a minute, its ok to want to kill game designers because the franchise we love is heading in a direction not many of us like, but its not ok to come down on those making the threats? An intelligent or even angry response is one thing. Threatning someone's life is another. Especially over a fucking game. I'm going assume you misunderstood what I said, or I didn't make it too clear. Otherwise I'd have to think you're one of the turds that needs flushing.
