Nine Inch Nails: The Game would have been awesome photo

Digg recently invited Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor to participate in their Dialogg feature so readers could ask questions and get to know more about the man himself. One of the questions that made it to the top of the pile was "What are your favorite videogames?", giving Reznor an opportunity to speak a bit about the game that got away -- one that he and art director Rob Sheridan planned years ago.

Reznor criticizes the lack of creativity in games, saying that WiiWare and Xbox Live yields some of the coolest and most creative games out there. He also says that when he pitched his game idea to some publishers that the response was "disheartening" -- to sum up, the response was "Well, it costs so much to make a game, we're really only interested in sequels or movie tie-ins." Not a surprise, is it? You can check out the full video of this part of the interview after the jump, by the way.

Reznor also names titles like Tempest and Robotron as long time favorites. I'm not surprised -- the first time I saw the man's full arcade cabinet collection in his home/studio, I knew only a deep love for games could fuel such a wonderful gathering of memorabilia. And if you're wondering how it is I got to check this stuff out with my own two hands, well, that's a story I'll only tell in person...

The ultimate post, Renzor, Colette, games.

Seriously I would love to see Reznor do a game, even based on Year Zero concept album...I actually love that album.

I have a feeling one of my close friends will be showing up in this post very shortly...

Actually, Year Zero would make a damn great game. At least for the story and atmosphere part.

I agree with everything that has been said in the comments. Also, NIN will be here in May and I can't wait.

I'm coming off the greatest NIN high in my life after seeing them a few months ago. This dude would have made a great game no doubt.

Its sad to see NIN taking a break, but he won't disappear. Nah, Trent is going to do something and maybe, just maybe a game will be one of those things.

Interesting interview. He had some insightful things to say about the games industry, in relation to his experience with the music industry, and I suspect that he's right on/

I'm sure it wasn't part of the tour of antique homes in New Orleans that Trent's pad was a part of, and something much more mysterious and intriguing, right Colette? :D

Man, it's kind of disheartening that even somebody like Trent Reznor can't get his game made because nobody wants to take any chances. Then again, Trent Reznor is a musician and not a game designer...

Trent is one musician that understands the Internet though, it's a shame he can't get a game up and running. If you're a big NIN fan and have an iPhone he has a bad ass app coming up for it.

He could always just lock himself up in a room for 100 days and refuse to come out until someone publishes his game, I'm sure that will work...

I didn't realize he had bulked up that much. Although I prefer Pretty Hate Machine/TDS/Fragile over the newer stuff I still love him as an artist. Unfortunate his pitch for a game never went through, knowing him though he'll find a way to be able to do it just how he wants it. What a rad guy.

I can see doepfer, metasonix (including the wretch machine !), AS stuff in the background, and like, a minimoog over the digg guy's shoulder, or maybe a voyager ? Dale North, wanna take a stab at it ?

"All the pigs are all lined up, I give you all that you want" Expect a video game mr. Reznor :( Hes fucking jacked and I would of liked to see this game. Oh well looks like Rock Band is the only way to get a NIN heroine fix.

I've never really been into NIN and I wasn't expecting to watch the whole interview but 40 minutes on I've got a lot of respect for Trent Reznor. What he had to say was really interesting and it's refreshing to see a musician who truly cares about the music and wants people to experience it, and uses technology to his advantage rather than suing as many people as possible and hoping it'll go away.

So, Colette, when do I get to meet you in person in order to hear your tale of meeting this god of music and of his awesome arcade collection?

Also, people, play the original Quake, Trent did the music for that game. When you pick up ammo for the nail gun, the crates have NIN logos on them. This may be as close as we will get to a NIN game.
