Japanese news source Nikkei has confirmed at least one of the many Project Cafe/Wii 2 rumors. They say that the controller will feature a six-inch touchscreen at its center, allowing for tablet-like controls of games. As rumored, there will also be buttons to be used alongside this touchscreen. A camera will also let you snap pictures of your face, much like you can on the Nintendo 3DS.
It has also been confirmed that the controller can be used as a stand-alone game device, as it's equipped with a battery that will support play on-the-go.
Finally, Nikkei says that this new console could launch as early as the middle of 2012.

Regardless, I just can't wait to pay more for the controllers than the console itself. All so nintendo could have a VMU ripoff.
I Echo mrandydixon
Huh.
Slick.
I wouldn't suggest it. It's not like controllers are very portable. Imagine carrying a classic controller, but bigger, everywhere you go. And it's not like the controller will have a lot of in depth games. considering that nintendo seems to ever be the only one that takes advantages of their own gimmicks, I would imagine you would only get a couple of minigames that erase as soon as you turn the controller off, or something.
I guess nintendo can try and prove me wrong though. Unless they manage to strike gold with the bottomless casual market, I'm actually kind of worried for nintendo as a console manufacturer
Holy crap, he can travel through time.
In any case, as always, can't judge until I see it. Even then, can't really judge until I use it.
Then again, I'm someone who has been played the Wii just as much as the PS3 this generation. I like 360, but I don't use it at much.
Right there with you, man :D
I'm not going to believe anything about Project Cafe until I see/hear it right from Nintendo at E3.
And I think using a stylus on a controller with buttons like that would be weird. So I think multitouch would be the way to go as well.
But what do I know.

The camera? I'm guessing still under even 1 mp. The screen will be resistive of course, not capacitive, and basically we'll have some inexplicably redundant setup of portable yet not gaming.
I dont know about you, but that sounds pretty awful in theory.
Also, in order to pack that controller with the parts to make it powerful enough to power a game while on the go, it would essentially make it it's own handheld gaming console. Which wouldn't make any sense since Nintendo just came out with the 3DS. And it would cost at LEAST $250. I just don't believe it at all.
If this thing is gonna have a screen at all, I couldn't see it being any bigger than the 3DS's bottom screen.
Wish you all the luck Nintendo, but you are way to gimick centric for me.
GET ME IN E3!!!!! :)
Tuesday can't come soon enough.
The touch screen is going to drain the battery crazy fast.
6"? That bigger that the NGP, that thing is going to weight a ton.
All for a screen that you will look at 0.1% of the time.
@Garison is right, Nintendo is notorious for having unbreakables. Doubt this'll be any different.
No way in HELL I am not buying 4+ controllers at $100 a pop so my friends can come over, get drunk, cover them in pizza resedue and wreck them.
I thing Nintendo dropped the ball here.
oh, wait
"Japanese news source Nikkei has confirmed at least one of the many Project Cafe/Wii 2 rumors."
It's probably a tablet with a small row of "select" and "power" type buttons, with game controls handled on the screen. Actual "classic" controls will probably be on a sold separately classic controller. Most of us here will probably weep quietly, while the casuals will go crazy for it. Call it the WiiPad or something.
I cannot WAIT for E3, because I'm hoping Nintendo will be able to make us all go "OOOHH" and breathe a sign of relief that this is not the train wreck it sounds like.
