Nikkei confirms touchscreen for Project Cafe controller photo

Japanese news source Nikkei has confirmed at least one of the many Project Cafe/Wii 2 rumors. They say that the controller will feature a six-inch touchscreen at its center, allowing for tablet-like controls of games. As rumored, there will also be buttons to be used alongside this touchscreen. A camera will also let you snap pictures of your face, much like you can on the Nintendo 3DS.

It has also been confirmed that the controller can be used as a stand-alone game device, as it's equipped with a battery that will support play on-the-go.

Finally, Nikkei says that this new console could launch as early as the middle of 2012.

You sure it's 100% confirmed or just very likely?

Regardless, I just can't wait to pay more for the controllers than the console itself. All so nintendo could have a VMU ripoff.

I wouldn't suggest it. It's not like controllers are very portable. Imagine carrying a classic controller, but bigger, everywhere you go. And it's not like the controller will have a lot of in depth games. considering that nintendo seems to ever be the only one that takes advantages of their own gimmicks, I would imagine you would only get a couple of minigames that erase as soon as you turn the controller off, or something.

I guess nintendo can try and prove me wrong though. Unless they manage to strike gold with the bottomless casual market, I'm actually kind of worried for nintendo as a console manufacturer

Holy crap, he can travel through time.

In any case, as always, can't judge until I see it. Even then, can't really judge until I use it.

Then again, I'm someone who has been played the Wii just as much as the PS3 this generation. I like 360, but I don't use it at much.

I honestly hope this is one rumor that is untrue. Those controllers will be too expensive if that's the case. On the flip side, they'll be as durable as a tank because Nintendo made them, which will decrease the need to buy replacements, but still...

I don't believe this. For one, do you know how big a 6 inch screen is, it'll look stupid and the controller will be huge. 2, if this is true and Nintendo is trying to recapture the hardcore audience this screen better do something amazing.

I'm not going to believe anything about Project Cafe until I see/hear it right from Nintendo at E3.

Seems... I dunno. Six inches is REALLY big for a screen on a controller. I could see them using maybe four inch screens (the same ones they use in most Android phones now).

And I think using a stylus on a controller with buttons like that would be weird. So I think multitouch would be the way to go as well.

But what do I know.

Damnit, I don't want it to be a standalone gaming product because knowing Nintendo's track record it will receive little support. I really hope Nintendo knows what they're doing because I'm not liking this so far. I'll still give them the benefit of the doubt because the own my soul, but I'm very cautious with this.

Oh, there's no doubt now that the hardware of these controllers is going to be just awful.

The camera? I'm guessing still under even 1 mp. The screen will be resistive of course, not capacitive, and basically we'll have some inexplicably redundant setup of portable yet not gaming.

I dont know about you, but that sounds pretty awful in theory.

Plus with a screen that big, do you guys realilze how freaking breakable that will be? Nintendo has always made their shit extremely droppable (especially home console controllers). I could see a kid chucking one of these at their brother in anger and smashing the screen to bits.

Also, in order to pack that controller with the parts to make it powerful enough to power a game while on the go, it would essentially make it it's own handheld gaming console. Which wouldn't make any sense since Nintendo just came out with the 3DS. And it would cost at LEAST $250. I just don't believe it at all.

If this thing is gonna have a screen at all, I couldn't see it being any bigger than the 3DS's bottom screen.

I'm curious about the design. Will it have handles, grips? Will it be flat, and tablet like, but with buttons like on a DS? Will it have actual analog sticks, or slider pads like the 3DS?

Tuesday can't come soon enough.

So controllers that cost over $200?

The touch screen is going to drain the battery crazy fast.

6"? That bigger that the NGP, that thing is going to weight a ton.

All for a screen that you will look at 0.1% of the time.

@Garison is right, Nintendo is notorious for having unbreakables. Doubt this'll be any different.

A six-inch screen is fucking massive. The NGP is only 5 inches, and they're all puffed-up with pride over that. Setting aside the obvious break-ability factor of such a device, which would humorously mirror the wiimotes-breaking-tv-screens situation of a few years ago, I can't see how this is going to be comfortable to work with.

I have to agree with what others said. Even tho I think a controller with a build-in touchscreen sounds interesting, 6 inch sounds quite massive. At that size, you can almost keep the TV out of the whole equation - which might be what will happen. Alternatively, it could be that the Touchscreen is just kind of on the "free" space between the buttons and not actually "square". So instead of an actual screen, you'd have programmable touch-buttons and surfaces scattered all over the controller. For example to display ammo, do some swishing movement, scrolling, what have you... Oh well, we'll know on tuesday. :P

Eh. I can't ..

It's probably a tablet with a small row of "select" and "power" type buttons, with game controls handled on the screen. Actual "classic" controls will probably be on a sold separately classic controller. Most of us here will probably weep quietly, while the casuals will go crazy for it. Call it the WiiPad or something.

I cannot WAIT for E3, because I'm hoping Nintendo will be able to make us all go "OOOHH" and breathe a sign of relief that this is not the train wreck it sounds like.
