Night vision goggles in Modern Warfare 2 are 'a bad idea' photo

While many of us are still trying to decide what to make of night vision goggles being included with the Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition, one man has already reached a firm conclusion -- this is going to go horribly wrong. The Philadelphia Inquirer's resident game correspondent, Rob Watson, has warned that he feels some will use Infinity Ward's gift for evil instead of good.

"I hate trippin' over games with a violent angle because I know there are many people out there who believe that these videogames are the product of Satan or some such nonsense, but [night vision goggles are] a bad idea," professes Watson. "I would say 99.9999% of gamers who buy the Prestige Edition will have a blast with these new goggles, innocently playing around at night with them.

"Yet, it is also like giving away a free race car with Gran Turismo or Forza - someone is going to cause a highway wreck. In Modern Warfare 2's case, I shudder (just a bit) to think of someone, who may have a hard time with reality anyway, donning these goggles for real mischief or even worse.

"Infinity Ward should know better," he concludes. "They are great at fake realism. One of the best. This maybe be crossing that line, however."

Watson does actually bring up a rather salient point. While I disagree with the idea of forming rules based on the minority instead of the majority, I do think that if something does go wrong with these goggles, it'll be a PR disaster. Just imagine if some idiot kid trips on a traintrack while wearing these things -- you just know there'll be a media circus, and the "ban this sick filth" debate will start all over again.

On Infinity Ward's head be it, I suppose.

On second thought, NVGs would be great for breaking into someones house.

...How much were they again?

Speaking of which, didn't EA send you guys brass knuckles or knives or something alongside The Godfather II? Whatever happened to those?

I can use a hollowed out Master Chief helmet to rob a bank, beat someone to death with the GTAIV Steel box and/or stangle a baby with a Dead Rising shirt.

The link? Pre-order stuff.

I want those NVG and if they don't like it, they can eat a Prey pewter figure.

think about it how good are the googles ? what if there a novelty at best like green tinted glasses you know ha yes i do agree they might get into the wrongs hands but if there was a sicko already out there and he wanted nv googles woudnt he have bought ones anyway ? its not like a sicko is goin to buy the prestige bundle and toss the game and go all out in a attack frenzy !

@unangbangkay, they were asked to send the brass knuckles back to them as they got in trouble for it (obviously as it was completely retarded in the first place). Somebody blogged about it, one of the editors I believe. They got 'em, but had to send them back straight away I believe.

I think these will be helpful, they'll help gamers stop tripping up over things in the night if the lights are off when playing horror games or MW2 until the early hours of the morning :]

Aside from the fact these items are most likely cheap quality knockoffs for the sake of promotion and some extra cash, and that it's extremely unlikely anyone who buys these will be able to do anything sinister with a slightly greener view of the night sky -- I don't mind this guy's caution about Infinity Ward's choices here.

While I respect his opinion, he says it's like "also like giving away a free race car with Gran Turismo or Forza". Actually, it's like packing in a crappy version of something people can buy in real life that provides almost none of the benefits of the real product other than the novelty. It would be more like packing in a really expensive Hot Wheels car with your Forza or GT. People will think it's cool for a week or so, run around in their house with the goggles on, accidentally hit their knee on the coffee table, finally go back to playing the game and never use their expensive toy again.

You could also cut someone's throat with a game disc. it's about time we start making people responsible for their actions and not blaming some scapegoat.

What's next? are we gonna ask kitchenware companies to stop making knives because someone stabbed some other guy? It's the people we should blame not the product.

You can buy these without the game. And do the eeeevil than.

BTW I've asked some friends that're interested in military tech more than me - and they say it's probably going to be very cool gadet, but not more. Considering the cuts they could get if they managed to bypass middlemen and got it straight from the source - it still is not enough for what army guys use now. Though it will probably be fully funcjonal, only with limited FOV and range.

While his argument is rather dumb I agree with Sterling's comment at the end of this article. Video games and the issues some people believe they cause are a hot button issue right now. Yes we all know you can go out and buy a baseball bat and beat someone to death with it. But that won't garner any media attention. All it would take is one idiot doing something stupid and either getting hurt or worse killed because of this product and it would be a media circus. MW2 is a huge release this year, the biggest really, so all sights are set on it.

It's actually a pretty valid point. You wouldn't want to be throwing NVG goggles to some of the lower rungs of society.

On the other hand, I actually work for a company who manufacture the optical filters that go into nightvision googles, cockpit conversions and such and when I told the technically minded chaps of the googles, the price etc they literally burst out laughing. They'll probably be Gen 1, and therefore, shit. Work is actually pre-ordering a copy so we can have a play around with them.

He said himself, 99.9999% of people will use them safely and responsibly. Just because you can use them to watch little girls sleep doesn't mean they should be banned. It's not the night vision goggles' fault if somebody does something stupid and/or illegal with them.

@ Swizzler121

while i doubt the goggles will be particularly high end, the video unboxing made a fairly big deal about how they would be "fully functioning" so if they end up being cheap fakes then people will not be happy. like class action lawsuit unhappy.

Well, that makes sence. It actually does. But, come to think about it, isn't the game itself on some kind of plastic disk? You can break those and cut yourself (and/or others) with the pieces you know. But, wait... You can also suffocate by trying to eat the plastic casing. Oh, and what about setting fire to an orphanage using the paper box as fuel? Ohhh my god... MISCHIEF...! Now that I think about it, they can solve all that by putting the following sticker on the box of... well, everything I guess. The sticker will read "not to be used in case of intended mischief". See...? Problem solved. Also, ban fish. Why, you ask? Because I used to know someone who had a friend whose granny choked on a fish bone once. And ended up choked. As in dead. So, it seems only logical to assume that we should BAN THIS SICK FILTH...!

Maybe instead of stupid night vision goggles they could use their resources to make some more maps for the game itself?

Seriously if I wanted garbage toys I'd buy them.

I understand when they have "Deluxe" editions that include stuff such as a miniature helmet or a figurine, even a shirt, shitty night vision goggles are just a waste of time and money.

I can already see a problem with the night vision goggles. Driving. I've had to do night driving convoys using NVG's and let me tell you, it's EXTREMELY hard. You know at least someone is going to do it (I'm sure I just gave the idea to half of you know).

Am I the only one still feeling jipped by the Halo 3 Legendary edition, especially now when compared to this. :\ You couldn't even put the damn helmet on and here we're getting working NVGs?

Let me just be the first to point out that night vision goggles were not invented for this game and anyone who wants them for mischief might have picked up a pair from their local NVG retailer. Oh, four people pointed that out already? It must be a very obvious point.

I bet they're similar to these.

I'd probably be game to grab one of these things if the goggles were of decent quality. Too bad we'll never know (spoiler: they'll be comparable to $60 NVG toys at best) until the things are sold out. That or they'll be stacked a dozen high at every store and I'll wake up late the morning they go on clearance for 50 bucks, making me regret missing out for the rest of my life.

So, his point is that no one should get them because .0001% of people will misuse them? This could be said about almost anything. Should we stop selling matches and kitchen knives? I'm sure a higher pecentage of those have been misused.

If someone wanted to buy a $100,000 special Forza bundle that came with a race car, more power to them. People are allowed to buy racecars, hand-wringing notwithstanding. And people are allowed to buy infrared imaging tech. Creeps do not have to wait for MW2 to come out to buy creeping gear.

Oh shit, people will be able to see in the dark!

This is insane. If someone uses these for 'real mischief, or worse' then the only difference to their normal behavior will be that they might do it at night. Nothing is anyones fault, these days, its always something or someone else. Pathetic.

Also, his (ridiculous) analogy alone should be enough for any rational person to ignore him. If IW were giving out a free gun with MW 2, then maybe he'd have a point.

You can spend several thousand pounds on Night Vision Goggles and they'll still be shit.
A pair of Night Vision Googles that you get for around 70 dollars on top of the price of a Video Game are going to be pure garbage, and will not work in the slightest.

Big Deal the average camcorder can do the same thing if you have a larger IR source. It will still throw enough non-visible light so the camcorder or goggles will work. These are a gimmick item and while they may be used for evil, again, big deal, people have robbed banks with Toy Guys.
They have been selling real night vision in gun stores for many years now.
This is more like what you'd get at Toys R Us for night vision.

Are you kidding? This is one of the stupidest arguments I have seen in a while. While you are at it, why not get rid of all the tools in the world. Anyone can go to the hardware store and pick up a hammer. That person might smash windows or heads with it, so why not ban the sale of hammers? - On another note; no one should expect these goggles to be top-of-the-line. However, I read somewhere that these should work at least up to 50 feet. But whether they work or not, you should be buying the Prestige Edition because you love the game, not because you want quality NVG's.

This is a ridiculous accusation. The author of this article is writing this article as if night vision goggles are a controlled product. They are not! You can buy a pair of military-grade NVG's off almost any sporting, hunting, or tactical products website with nothing more than a credit card and several hundred dollars to spare. Hell, you can even buy low-grade NVGs from your local Toys R Us for a lot less that $160. Yes, I'm sure there will be people out there who will cause mischief, but it's not mischief that hasn't been around anyways.
