NieR gets new screens and angsty, angsty box art photo

NieR has mostly been focusing its PR chicanery on the Japanese market, but today we got a nice little parcel with screens and box art hidden within as publisher Square Enix turns its eyes toward we Western devils. The game also has a release window now, pegged for a North American launch in Spring 2010.

The game's graphics aren't exactly stunning, but it's still promising to be a pretty solid and brutal action RPG. It's got plenty of freaky creature designs, a load of blood and more grizzled angst than you could shake a stick at. All the ingredients for a fun time, so I'm certainly keeping a hopeful eye on it.

Hit the jump for the official fact sheet.

Does look very angsty. I mean, one of those three characters on the box looks really happy.

I want him to be my friend!

I think it's funny how Japanese versions of making something Western usually tend to make the guys on steroids and look really mad.
That, and be sure to say @$$hole and $h1t a lot. Oh, and if it's the last couple years, we Western types apparently play no other gameplay type other than Gears Of War.

Looks interesting. I halfway enjoyed that Conan game that came out a few years ago, and this looks at least better than that.

"The game's graphics aren't exactly stunning, but it's still promising to be a pretty solid and brutal action RPG."

BUT DOES IT HAVE FUTA ON IT?!?

I am so damned confused. I remember reports that the PS3 version was going to be one game and the 360 version another, both exclusive to Japan and the US/Europe respectively. Now it seems that the guy from the 360 version is on the PS3. Does that mean that the effeminate Nier is on the 360, or was he scrapped? Aaaaah!

I don't understand what they're trying to do with this game. I particularly don't like how it says "franchise."

The more I see of NieR, the more I like it. Granted the protagonist looks like a white-haired S&M deviant, but I also like Conan the Barbarian and Lord Humongous, so that's not a deal breaker.

However, the two different versions are what intrigues me the most. I've gotta say I'm looking forward to playing the 360 version, personally, as it looks to appeal more to my tastes. While both stories seem run-of-the-mill, it's rare that a video game explores the relationship between a father and daughter, one of the strongest bonds in life.

That and I'm a sucker for male power fantasy heroes. What can I say? I grew up on comic books in the late 80's/early 90's.

I thought this product was NieR Gestalt and NieR Replicant. Is it just the one now...? With the one box?

Something tells me that Gestalt and Replicant were working titles/codenames for the PS3 and 360 projects.

Gestalt and replicant exist in Japan. In America, we only get replicant, titled simply "nier," on both systems.

You guys need to make up your minds on whether it's spelled "NeiR" or "NieR." I don't even know what's correct any more.

Nier is dutch for Kidney... makes sense.

Also doesn't anyone notice the two S-runes to the right and the semblance they bear to a certain german party militia from 80 years ago?

Just my lone opinion, but I think that box art is pretty snazzy.
