NieR director disses the Wii, demands an HD solution photo

NieR director Yoko Taro is working on a game that undeniably looks sexy in the graphical department, but it seems like too many hi-def visuals can spoil your eyes. Taro recently spoke of his personal experiences at the Tokyo Game Show, describing the various Square Enix trailers he saw and outright claiming that he found Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers "painful" to watch.

"I wanted to see the NieR video at TGS, so I watched the Square Enix booth theater continuously," explains Taro, who apparently isn't allowed to look at his own trailers. "It was looping, so after FFXIII came Crystal Bearers. To be honest, the graphics in Crystal Bearers are hard on the eyes ... Bearers' graphics are well done, I get the feeling that you could call them the highest level for Wii. However, SD graphics are just painful."

"Nintendo should use their profits to make a backwards compatible HD Wii, or release an optional upconverter for the Wii, or give the television industry money to properly handle SD video."

I find certain Wii games hard to look at, but a well-designed title can look pretty good. I personally think a lot of Nintendo's first-party games are actually quite good looking, at least for what they are. What do you think, though? Do you find Wii titles hard on the eyes, or is that a complaint for the graphic whores only?

Action needs to be in HD?

Tell that to No More Heroes, or any PS2 action title: all of which are better than anything the 360/PS3 has to offer so far.

I think the NieR Director is just bitter that the game looks like a half-rate Devil May Cry with a transvestite.

Sounds like a complain for graphic whores only.

There's a fair share of great looking Wii Titles: Muramasa, Mario Galaxy, Metroid, Zelda, RE4, Little King's Story.

Strange. I've been gaming since 1982 and never knew I needed HD. Or that SD was for some reason painful to my eyes. Sure am glad I got his guy to let me know these things, though.

Oh wait.. what I meant to say is.. that guy is a graphics whore.

I'm not a graphics whore, but I understand the complaint about some games. In an age of high definition graphics, a modern title with poor visuals is slightly disappointing. It's not a huge deal, of course. I'm jus' sayin'.

@Camiwaits: Try playing RE4 on an HDTV. See, a lot of good looking games only look good on small TVs. My friend got RE4 for the Wii. He has a 61'' plasma. When we first saw it, we honestly thought the game was broken, or maybe the Wii itself. We tried different cables and another Wii, but the problem was that RE4 is just a terrible looking game when blown up that big.

Relllatively certain displaying a Wii game in 720p isn't gonna do that much. A bit less jaggies and blurriness, but that's about it. I'd be a bit embarrassed as someone that actually works on games to say something that stupid though. Usually this is the realm of idiot fanboys and analysts that don't know a goddamn thing about the actual tech involved with this stuff.

I just want it to look like there was some effort put into it. I've never been a big graphics guy. I fucking love 'em like my little sister but they're not neccesary (like a little sister).

I mean seriously how many shitty looking PC indie games are amazing?

I had a similar problem when I had been playing Ratchet and Clank Future for a month and then bought Mario Galaxy. I put the game in and thought there was something wrong with the video connection. There were jaggies everywhere and the textures had some blocky gradients going on.

It didn't effect the fun of the game but it was hard on the eyes going from a first party PS3 game down to a first party Wii game.

If SD content looks like a pool of sick on your HDTV, then you bought yourself a lemon, my friend. You mean to tell me that, despite the advances in television technology, non-HD video can't be displayed properly? I thought this shit was advanced. That's fucking broken. Go back to the store and get your money back from the bloodsuckers who played you.

If you happen to be one of those people who delude themselves into thinking an SD feed will burn your retinas after viewing almighty high-definition... shut it. That's nonsense. Stop spreading retard all over the place.

And that is the problem with video game developers.

I'm a paying customer who owns a Wii, and I do not care at all that I'm getting SD graphics on my HD TV. That does not mean I like my games ugly, Mr. Yoko Taro, it just means that I can't really tell are appreciate the difference between HD and SD. Now instead of making beautiful games about transvestites in HD, why don't developers make a game that I can actually play with other people without embarrassing myself, and forget about the things that I, the paying Wii-owning customer, have no interest in.

@gamadaya: Exactly. The Wii has some beautiful games with brilliant game design and technical prowess that could be very well be PROPORTIONALLY much more impressive than most stuff on the more powerful duo, but hooking it up to a HD TV is begging for disappointment and eye sore. I had it on my 1080p 50' TV and boy, oh boy, is it awful. You don't really notice it with the minimalistic graphics of Wii Sports Resort or the orgasming colors of Super Mario Galaxy, but Twilight Princess looks just god damm awful.

On the guy's statement, it was, at the very least, tremendously unpolite towards his own company colleagues and Nintendo as a whole. Yeah, an HD Wii would probably be great, but there's a hundred better ways to express this point. HOWEVER, the profits point is very well taken. The whole "we depend solely on videogames to keep afloat" talk has grown very bullshitty as of now. I always supported Nintendo, as I still do, but it aches giving them money(lots of it, given their profit margin) that looks like is being absolutely NOT reinvested on my future purchases from the company.

I can't believe we're having this discussion in 2009. People are entitled to their opinions, I personally have no problem with Wii graphics as I'm an art whore not a resolution whore. HD is nice, but the wii games I play on my 1080p 20" screen using component cables look just fine to me. Things don't need to be in HD to be preatty, case in point Shadow of the Colossus. That game is gorgeous, it's only problem is it's framerate which turns it into Shadow of the Power-Point Colossus.

Dead Space on 360 looks amazing, and as hard good a game as Extraction is, it's kinda go back to SD visiuls. It looks all dark and grainy. I sometimes feel like all the people who call me a graphics whore for saying stuff like this (despite it being true) are just lacking a HDTV. Once you get one, you'll change sides in this argument.

Come to think of it, this developer is an idiot.

Does he really think Neir is a title with any potential to travel by word of mouth? I don't think I know a single person who would admit to owning Neir, so his game has no hope of traveling by word of mouth. And he has no comprehension of how to make a game that sells, judging from the fact that he thinks the Wii needs HD. He simply lacks any appeciation of the art of being a salesman.

Wii graphics require style, rather than pushing for only SUPERREALISM.
As such, from a design point of view, a lot of games look better on Wii. Look at SMG for example, and compare it to, say, Ratchet and Clank. There's really not that much difference in terms of graphical quality, because SMG is styled really damn well.

There are still an awful lot of people who don't own HD TVs. And among the people that do own HD TVs, there are a lot of people who don't use their HD TV to game. There are a million more reasons why what that guy said is idiotic, but I'll leave it at that.

Yes, Nintendo is slacking in the graphics department, but hey. How many Nintendo AAA titles would benefit from realism anyway? Metroid Prime? MAYBE Zelda? It would be nifty if Nintendo would go ahead and make motions towards HD, but I'm not going to insult them for NOT doing it. Especially given the number of consoles they're selling...the HD tech-whores are definitely a minority.

Some of the arguments you guys are proposing contradict themselves, my game looks like crap on an HDTV; isn't that because the source itself isn't HD cause the Wii can't support it. I can't admit to liking the Wii; frankly, i downright hate it, but it does have some very fun, decent looking games. But I think we can all agree that it would look better with HD. Art direction is great, but it's even better with a touch of HD.

P.S. If you want an SD game to look good on an HDTV, buy a Samsung or something with a good upscale engine.

I own an HDTV and a 360, but I'm playing games from the 90's and earlier this decade with relative frequency, and the graphics are never an issue with me. I can't stand it when people say things like "Final Fantasy VII makes my eyes bleed." When it was released, the tech was revolutionary - did it make your eyes bleed then?

Actually, the advent of 3D gaming was in many ways a very depressing time for me. All the controls landed me in death chasms by accident, there very few fully 3D games, all of which were very ugly, and the collectithons like Banjo Kazooie left me stuck clueless on the first level.

It depends completely on what the focus of the game is, if the game is trying to be graphics heavy and have impressive imagery then HD is of course much better at that. However that isn't to say a game thats SD is any less playable or less fun simply that it looks different. I've seen some really interesting games that aren't HD and some HD games that aren't interesting so its still up to the game devs to make a playable game and if they choose to take advantage of the capabilities of HD then I hope they use to the benefit of the user.

I believe that many people who own an HD TV own it simply because they have become standardized and cheap, while SD TVs have become less convenient due to the bulk non-flatscreen displays have. I myself don't notice much difference. And if you are using the standard cables that come with the Xbox 360 or the PS3, you won't notice the difference either; both Microsoft and Sony reverted back to supplying SD cables with their systems, which makes HD graphics irrelivent for every customer that doesn't know any better. Which according to one of the recent articles (within the last 2 months), is more than half the gamers that played Gears of War 2.

oh man, i think the sd/hd debate brings out the most retarded arguments on dtoid :S

i will drop my two cents tho and be part of the lame-dom.

of course gaming in sd is not the end of the world, and there are plenty of beautifully designed games on the wii. that said, it would be nice if the wii output hd like the other two consoles so we could enjoy super-crisp visuals on current tvs.

there is a very noticeable difference in picture quality and its comparable to the difference between vhs and dvd, or dvd and blu-ray. if u dont believe that then i must assume that u own a wii and a sd tv, or a wii and an hd tv (and have nothing to compare it to). thats your choice and theres nothing wrong with that. that used to be my setup.

i have a wii and a 360 and play both regularly on a large hd tv, the 360's video is simply much clearer and it would be awesome if games like mario galaxy, zelda, eledees etc. could be played with the same level of clarity.

haha, i guess im now a graphics whore for posting this comment. oh well :S

The comment isn't stupid IMHO. I agree with him. Most Wii games are hard on the eyes after you've experienced HD gaming on the 360 and PS3. Its hard for me to go back to PS2 games! Most of them look so ugly in comparison. Or else, a lot of the atmosphere is lost, because of how the blockyness and textures just stick out.

Sure, the *gameplay* can still be decent with shoddy graphics. But oftentimes, it can ruin the atmosphere, which is just as important.

Can anyone say that Call of Duty 4 for instance would have been as good with PS2 graphics???

You know what, I agree with him. the majority of you lot have been pussy whipped by Nintendo. There's no doubt in my mind, that Nintendo could have made Wii HD from the get go, but they were obviously too lazy to do so. Its not like japan doesn't have HDTV, and its lack of vision on their part.

The game has changed, and Nintendo are scrubbing the visual barrel. There's a reason why all their games feature simplistic graphics, so that they can't worry about graphics and using new 3D tech. While this is fine, gamers require a certain degree of quality in the 21st century. I too was a fool who bought their bs excuses, but no more. 360 and PS3 are setting the display standard of HD, and for Nintendo to drop this one is embarassing. You'd have thought Nintendo would have learned from, the GC lacking behind and also lacking true online, no hard drive etc etc.

Sure, some Wii games look cool, but if you are a Wii developer, its already hard enough to sell your games. Nintendo, you can't always expect to be right about everything, but it seems many just take their spiel at face value.

Art direction and design counts more on Wii, but still can't find the awfulness of some games.

I also agree, that the new Wii FF game looks like a lot of fun, more so than even FFXIII. Why can't the main FF games get some of that too?

There is a huge majority of "casual gamers" who have Wii's.

There is a huge majority of "normal people" who DON'T have HD TV's yet.

Surely there is no real problem setting your console's abilities to match the majority of your market? Right?

Now, i dislike SD, only because I've been spoiled by HD, If you watch a film on Sky HD, then flip to the same SD channel, it's REALLY noticable, but not painful.

i think a lot of us have been spoiled by upscalers too, my friend is debating the HD TV purchase, but watches a DVD on my PS3 and HD TV, and says that it looks the same as a blu-ray, can't tell the difference, (i can) that is until I show him a DVD on a DVD player plugged into the HD TV, no upscaler = horrible.

i LOVE the upscaler on PlayTV - that update was the fucking bollocks! Now all my TV, even recorded TV, looks not far off blu-ray quality, but not quite. I still love's me those Blu-rays that lovefilm keep sending.

HD is better, it's a step in the right direction, but it's not essential.

(unless you're playing one of those games with tiny type designed only to be readable on HD, my buddy has trouble with some games because of that, about time he bought an HD TV to go with that PS3 methinks)

PLUS FFXIII is really to good graphically and gameplay wise has not differntiated itself from the rest of the FF games, and it is more like a cheep USA MMO.
