Nielsen ratings are fact, Wii third place in overall console usage photo

Nielsen ratings are awesome, partially because they keep my favorite T.V. show (JAG) alive and well. Nielsen also collects videogame data. The kicker is that the demographic willing to fill out the questionnaires aren’t exactly “in the now” like the majority of us are. The latest console usage chart indicates that the PlayStation 2 is still rocking hard and the super spectacular crazy-selling Wii only nabbed third place.

Charts like this aren’t exactly great barometers, nor can any analysis derived from be taken too seriously. You’ll notice that the original Xbox has netted a few more minutes of playtime than the PlayStation 3. Also, the GameCube is still a threat with a healthy 4.6%.

The “Other” category is of interest, mainly because who the hell knows what people are playing. Do you think the either the Sega Dreamcast or Atari Jaguar is making some noise? What about the 3DO or the SNES? The possibilities are endless.

Only excessive amounts of PCP could make this any better than it already is.

Whodathunk that a few Wii haters on a video game website would not be representative of the country as a whole? It's almost like the people here are OUTLIERS or something?

I believe this list. The PS2 is still the best system on the God damn list, while the PC would be the best if it was on the list. Almost nobody owns a PS3, so no surprises there. The people that do own a Wii probably get a fair amount of joy out of it because they have FRIENDS, which is pretty rare for the solo and online-multiplayer-only people here at Dtoid. The 360 is really popular and has a solid lineup, so they're second.

Honestly, this seems about right.

*yawn* More of DToids typical anti-Wii sentiment.

No, no. Don't mention that the PS2 beat out all current-gen consoles. No, no. Let's not mention that "Other" just barely came in lower than the Xbox 360. No, No. Let's not mention that the original XBox beat out the PS3.

No, fuck that. Let's instead mention that the Wii is in third place so that the anti-Wii fanboys can have a field day.

You're an asshole, Brad.

Not surprising with the amount of shovelware on the Wii. Since there's still tons of good games for the PS2 and most people have one, I can see why it's still at the top.
Superfluous Moniker's Avatar
Superfluous Moniker at 01/01/2009 13:12
Meh. Technically these numbers make sense from a broad point of view, as the PS2 is kind of like the NES where pretty much everyone with any interest in gaming whatsoever got one eventually. The Wii looks to be the successor to that title.

I wouldn't be surprised if 'Other' is essentially all PC gaming, they put it at the end for some dumb reason even though it's third on the list. I'm sure there's lots of people still playing Sims games out there *shudder*.

the system with the most good games? so cooking mama is a good game now? largest set of experiences(?) gamers? i believe that 9 year old kids and soccer moms aren't experienced gamers at all, the latter being bandwagon jumpers and the former being little kids.

where the fuck do you live because as a ps3 owner i even know the 360 has the most good games. yeah, the wii has the most games because most of them aren't really games but crap mini-game shovelware.

the ps3 has the most best quality rated games based on games per system. if could remember the link i would link it.

@-PL-:

Actually, Neilsen operated through several survey companies. I get one of their video game surveys about once a month, and it does get rather detailed.

Their questions break down what consoles you own, how many hours per week do to play each console, what kind of games do you play on each console, were the hours spent in the previous week on each console more or less than the week before, and so forth. So, they do go into quite a bit of detail.

I also noticed that usually the only people who qualify are those who have spent more than 10 hours playing per week. I've been doing surveys for so long (hell, that's how I mostly funded my XB 360 purchase) that I can identify what survey it's for just my the preliminary questions that are asked, and I've found that if I don't say at least 10 or 15 hours for video game pay I'm suddenly hit with "You do not qualify for the remainder of this survey." So, they're obviously making sure that only real gamers take the rest of the survey.

The only thing that I have to question is the "Other". All of the gaming surveys that I've taken also include PC game time, and I can't imagine that there are so many "other" consoles out there to account for 16.2%. I'll bet money that the PC is included in that one, even though they claim it's a "console" curvey.

As soon as the Wii gets more quality online FPSs like the Conduit, expect it to hit number two, then as the install base continues to increase, it'll hit number one. Even though the system has plenty of haters, the Wii still has the most diverse library of games out of any home console besides the PS2.

Just like pop music, the Wii makes everybody (except teenage boys) a little bit happy, as opposed to the 360 which pretty much only has games for one audience-- those teenage boys who hate the Wii so much.

The real news here is the PS3 tanking below even the OG Xbox. I guess that's what Sony gets for putting Blu Ray first and games second.

@Jonathan:

As someone who also appreciates the Wii for what it is, I agree. It does run the gamut from hard-core games (No More Heroes, MadWorld) to kiddie games more than any other console.

The problem right now is one of perception, as is proven every day here on DToid by the "graphics > gameplay". Nintendo has no innocence on that poor perception either. (Don't even get me started on that fscking Wii Music.)

Sadly, I wish I had a magic bullet for this. I am hearing people who don't even have a Wii talk about MadWorld and how cool it looks like it will be. So, maybe that glass ceiling is starting to break.

And you got it nailed on the PS3. They used Blu-ray for no other reason than to build their numbers in order to crush HD DVD. Now that HD DVD is dead, they've done nothing viable to push the PS3 as a gaming platform.

I do like my PS3 but I play my Wii and XB360 far more simply because they have the better games. I've already blown through Ratchet and Clank and Quest for Booty; I'm not a racing fan; and for FPS I stick with the keyboard/mouse on my PC. So what else is there for the PS3 that I can't get on either of the other two consoles + PC? Nothing that I can think of. For that, Sony has no one to blame but themselves.

Possibly, but none of the Neilsen surveys I've taken involve hand-helds/phones except for the question of "What device do you own and on which you play games you actively play games?" or something like that. They probably have other surveys that actively discuss hand-held consoles, though.

This seems about right. The PS2 is much cheaper than the other systems and has a huge library of games. It was the most popular last gen system.

What's funny is that the PS2 has far more kiddie games and shovelware than the Wii and yet no one mentions it. The most popular system is always going to get the shovelware. It's only logical to pump out the shitty games on the more popular system.

I personally think that the Wii has the best library of games for the current gen systems. I play it more than my 360 and I almost never touch my PS3. I can't handle shooters on a non Wii/PC system.
