There's no surprise in hearing that I'm playing more games than before, but I am surprised to hear that this is the case for everyone. Nielsen’s Cross-Platform Report says that time spent each day on a game console increased 14 percent over last year. That's a big jump! What caused that? Better games? More options? Or is it just that gaming is still growing. Whatever the reason, be sure to go outside for a bit and get some fresh air, okay?
Nielsen's report is full of interesting little bits of info. For example, game console use in TV viewing homes is increasing. For some reason Baltimore was found to have the highest videogame console penetration. Here's another strange one: People in Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama spend the most time watching video on the Internet.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Now that that's out of the way, it doesn't much surprise me that the middle south watches so much video on the net. Some soap operas moved to an entirely online format this year ;).
Probably because there are so many rural areas with large populations and no cable company to speak of. I live in a semi-rural area in Alabama and since I have no cable access and satellite TV is so expensive, Netflix and Hulu are easily the best available options.
That said, my console gaming this year has gone down about 90% (I game almost exclusively on PC now), but my Xbox is getting more use than ever since they put all the Power Rangers series on Netflix. My kids are retarded for that shit.
Same here. Pure internet/netflix. Thats all of my movie, tv, internet, and gaming needs for only 40 dollars a month. I'll never go back to cable tv again.
A lot of people don't have a job to go to so they spend their free time playing video games.
Also if I show some annoying 12 year old my ass IRL I go to jail but on videogames I get banned for a week and can get stuff done, WINNING
I'm going to tell you at least one reason why this is. The economy there is sh*t despite what people throw around on the news about growth. The growth isn't where it's needed or counts and the income many people are getting, if they happen to have a job, is still far to low. So people are turning to alternatives like the internet in order to shave off dollars from their monthly bills, which means less cable and satellite and more internet.
Actually, part of that reason that turns into another all together. Its the fact that, in that region, the few TV providers they can get aren't being very competitive with their pricing and things seem to only keep going up. Actual deals are hard to come by.
