Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger has been complaining that there are not enough rock bands in the world, and that people should stop playing Guitar Hero so they may lend a hand.
"I feel like there's not enough rock bands out there, especially when we go on the road," Kroeger explains. "It's tough to find other bands out there, because either they're making a record, or they just got done touring. So kids: Start rock bands. Set down the Guitar Hero, learn how to play an actual guitar and start a band, because it's hard to find more bands to put a solid rock-and-roll package together, to get out there."
I've always loved that "go play a real guitar" argument, mainly because it's deliciously stupid. It's essentially telling an FPS fan to join the army, or a racing game player to buy a Formula 1 car. I should think that anybody with a real interest and talent in guitar playing would already be playing guitar.
People who have no interest in being Nickelback, however, are busy having fun with their videogame.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The more you know?
Nickelback isn't in any fucking position to tell ANYONE what to do musically.
I'm absolutely certain that there is no shortage of rock bands in the world.
Are hard ass rock bands losing contracts to milquetoast button down shirt rock? (you know what I'm talking about)
Absolutely.
Also, screw Nickelback. Every one of their songs sounds exactly the same.
Put down the guitar, pick up a noose.
Here's to this hopefully keeping Nickleback out of Guitar Hero and Rock Band!
ANYWAY... if anyone wants to see what people think of nickle back, or see them get hit with rocks see BELOW

That said, I think his statement was less of an attack on Guitar Hero and more of a "Hey guys, if you like Guitar Hero and are into music consider actually learning how to play." There's a huge difference between what he said and when uberdouche John Mayer said something like Guitar Hero made untalented people think they were as good as him and it pissed him off.
I think it's retarded when people say shit like "OMG WHY PLAY GUITAR HERO WHEN YOU COULD PLAY A REAL INSTRUMANT ROCK BAND SUCKS", but I think it would be equally stupid to not take advantage of the fact that games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero have the potential to get kids/adults actually interested in learning to play a real instrument. There's nothing negative about learning to play the guitar.
Wrong. It IS much harder to learn to play a guitar, but most people that learn to play the guitar play covers. If I'm going to learn to play other people's songs I'd rather have something that is not too hard to learn and extremely fun. Also, real guitar lacks the ability to be competitive in the way guitar hero is. Yeah, people should learn to play a real instrument, but it doesn't mean people can't play guitar hero.
plus, nickelback sucks balls.
Also: This is a guy from Nickelback. Really? Him telling people to play music is about as useful a politician telling people to be honest.

Did you read anything in the article?
My roommate always tells me to quit playing Rock Band on the occasion that I play it, he says in the time it took to get good at that game I could be playing real guitar.
Well fuck you roommate, again, thats not the point of the game, and I could never play Nirvana exactly how Nirvana plays Nirvana.
It's shallow if anyone doesn't see the appeal of this game and simply tosses it aside as a poser's guitar. FUCK YOU ALLLLLLL GAHDFLKSJADF
Anger.
I play both keyboard and guitar. I enjoy playing them. But sometimes I just want to play in fun, and that's exactly where RB and GH come in.
It's pathetic that some people just can't get it into their heads that one is a real musical instrument and the other is a game.
Seriously, Nickelback might as well be playing Rock Band, at least they'd be playing some good songs.
also dmgi:
"It IS much harder to learn to play a guitar, but most people that learn to play the guitar play covers."
didn't I just say that? well I mean the first part.
I'm pretty sure I've considered Nickleback to be rock-a-billy, rather than hardcore rock for...well, forever.
I'd love to see some sort of scientific study on the matter (but it's probably impossible to do).
HA HA HA HA GET IT!?
I want to apologize on behalf of all Canadians for letting this blithering idiot loose on the world.
I could say more, but I've already posted my views about this general subject already.
