NHL Arcade Q&A answers all your questions photo
     PS3

February is fast approaching, and I’m excited about that month in gaming not only for Killzone 2, but also for EA Sports’ PSN/XBLA title, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade. It’s been just over a month since the initial reveal, so EA Sports updated the game’s official Web site with a Q&A -- EA Sports Community Manager Alain Quinto interviewed Matt Mahar, producer on NHL Arcade.

We already were aware of a lot of the basic points that the post addresses, but it goes into a good bit of detail on the game’s feature set. For example, the online modes sound pretty robust, with ranked and unranked games available, as well as a Play A Friend mode. Of course, the most impressive aspect of the game’s online features is the previously mentioned full 3-on-3 option, similar to the online play available in NHL 09.

Powerups were also discussed: there are eight of them, and they can be obtained by checking opposing players. There’s information on player types, too, and much more -- check out the full Q&A here.

Personally, I can’t wait for this game. It’s been a long time since there was a truly great arcade sports experience; here’s hoping that 3 on 3 NHL Arcade will be the next one. It’s going to be available for $9.99 (800 MS spacebucks) next month.

Wasn't Wayne Gretsky 3D Hockey an arcade-style hockey game? I remember playing that when the N64 first came out...

There are two NBA Jam style hockey game series I'm aware of:

Wayne Gretkzy 3D hockey..."HE's A WALL!!!"
NHL Hitz.

@Dexter345 & JamnOnTheOne: Yeah, I don't know what the hell they're talking about. I remember Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey very fondly, and I've also played Hitz.

wow, no one remembers NHL Open Ice? It was made by the same company as NBA Jam...came out shortly after Jam. I never dumped asmany quarters into an arcade game as that one.

My apologies, I was talking out my ass. While Hitz Existed to me, I didn't feel the series was that great. I had all but forgotten about Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey and NHL Open Ice, but even then, that's 12 years without a worthy successor (to me, anyways). On that note, I'm hoping NHL Arcade turns out to be a shining example of Arcade Sports at its finest.

If this game is anything like NHL Hitz, I'm sorry in advanced for the domination I'll have over you all online. Hitz is one of two games that I have no equal in wuhahaha.

San Fran Rush 2049 is the other :D

@Celica: Well, if it is anything like Wayne Gretzky 3d hockey, I will murder you all. My first game for the N64, and the only game I have NEVER been beaten in. I've only played 200 people, but still.

I might have to look into this silliness.

I'm pretty pumped for this game. It looks like a lot of fun, and a $10 hockey game sounds a lot easier to talk my friends into buying than something like NHL 09.

After 2008, I'm really starting to love XBLA

THis might be alot of fun. Arcade style hockey will probably help me score a bit more than the usual 0-1, 4-1 I get in sims.
