So even smaller indie devs are having an easier time of it, though truth told it is doubtful you'll get a game distributed on Steam if you make it in Game Maker.
I fully agree and with things like Little Big Planet as being the kernel of the concept of being able to create levels or even full games within a game, I agree that this concept is sure to grow.
Not just gamers having the ability to create, but better tools available for actual developers and easier access to things storefronts like the PSP mini's and the Xbox Indie games... with increased cross over to the full stores.
I also think that the ability to record gameplay will likely be a part of the next gen of consoles because it's not always about creating games, but also the creative process of what can be done with gameplay recordings.
... and I had a few drinks with dinner... and I rarely, if ever drink, so if this makes no sense at all... just ignore me!
Steam doesn't have to be the answer (though I'd surely love if it were), but I forsee a future where all gaming is done solely on PCs. It would cut down on a lot of needless console wars and would allow more low-budget/indie games to thrive.
Your philosophy of quick and cheap game making, though, certainly fits that bill.
But as a PC gamer I find it ridiculous that you are giving the credit to consoles. Especially when just in the last week or so indie developers have been coming out about what a pain in the ass it is to work with console certification, patches, etc. If anything Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are holding back indie developers.
The PC is where it's mostly originating, partly due to Steam but also independently with games like Minecraft. And indie titles like Super Meat Boy and Cthulu Saves The World did way better on PC.
1. Clerks - instead of finishing school, Kevin Smith dropped out of the Vancouver Film School (same program I graduated from) and put his tuition along with some loans towards making Clerks. Now i understand that a $30, 000 budget might sound like a lot, but there are many 'indie' games that cost triple that...
2. El Mariachi - Robert Rodriquez made this film for $8,000 in his hometown.... look at him now.
3. The Evil Fucking DEAD... Again, peanuts for a budget, Sam Raimi used a wheelchair as a dolly, and taped a super 8 camera to a freakin 2x4, instead of a stedicam...
I guess my point is that while cheap technology, access to dev tools like Unity, UDK, and CryEngine IS making it so that talented people can make something happen, I feel that the emphasis of your parallel should be not on the accessibility of affordable gear allows more creativity, rather that TRUE ingenuity, creativity, AND talent is now able to be showcased IN SPITE of budgets and the current state of affairs...
I'm not disagreeing with you at all actually, just wanted to toss in my two cents! Ultimately, talent is talent. and garbage is garbage...
Also, I completely agree with everyone saying that consoles aren't nearly as indie friendly as PC.
And I'm not totally bullshitting you about blogging. You always seem to have a lot to say, some of it *is* pretty smart, so why don't you put some of it out there as a blog?
You should appreciate that it takes some guts to put your work out there for feedback and critique. Sitting on the sidelines taking pot-shots at people without opening yourself up for criticism is kind of cowardly. And it's selfish, too - if you have good idea, put them coherently together as a blog and SHARE them instead of writing nothing but tirades against other people.
