In a financial update today, Ubisoft has revealed that "a new episode of Assassin's Creed" will be released in the companies 2010-11 fiscal year (which runs from April 2010 through March 2011). The kicker -- it will be the first game in the series to feature an online multiplayer mode.
An Assassin's Creed follow up isn't surprising -- Ubisoft is expecting that the game will "reach 9 million sell-in units by the end of March 2010." The report also states that sales of the sequel were 40% higher than the original, which (according to the publisher) demonstrates Ubisoft's "capacity for success in the high-end games market." As a result, expect a greater focus on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles in the company's 2010-2011 line-up.
But back to this multiplayer thing. Wait... really? I must admit, I'm not exactly sure how that will pan out. While it could be interesting to explore the game's huge cities with a friend (perhaps a Desmond/Lucy combo), there is something to be said about the solitary experience of the first two games. It's almost relaxing, in a way. Or is Ubisoft thinking more along the lines of competitive modes?
Surely we won't hear more about the next installment of Assassin's Creed until at least E3, so in the meantime, let your speculation begin.

Multiplayer mode featuring one player as an assassin and the other player as the target?
Fuck Yea!
Though I would say that without some kind of mission structure for the part of the target: something to do, something to complete so that the assassin has a time limit to keep track of.
or a bunch of guys chasing one guy all over the rooftops would be sweet too
Assassin's Creed has always been one of the most approachable and freedom-granting sandbox games to date. Why is it so hard to imagine a cooperative or competitive multiplayer component added? Furthermore, did no one else find the game lacking in difficulty ? The game's AI doesn't (and probably can never) do the series justice, at least when compared to the challenge a human opponent can deliver.
This game is screaming for a well-developed mission-based mode that either pits players against each other, or allows them to work separately toward shared goals.
Given the quality of ACII, I'm going to bet that anything they do for the third instalment will be just as good. I'm looking forward to this game a lot.
Because Multiplayer is a selling point. A big one.
I almost never buy games that do not have some form of Online available. Why pay $60 for a game I will only play through once? That's mental. I could just rent it.
Now, I'm not saying this new games' online will rock or something...Frankly, I don't know how they'll pull it off (unless it is modern and there are guns, but that sorta' defeats the whole "Assassin" thing really...), but I'm just saying.
I used to think like you as well. Then I turned 18 and realized that I was totally wasting money on games that only satisfied me for a few hours.
It's the reason I never bought AC1, will not buy AC2, etc etc.
There are exceptions, though. I *will* be buying God of War 3...
C'mon people. Calm down.
Also, that header is so easy to caption. I love it.
lol jk
No, I'm not.
Now for mine..... DON'T ADD MULTIPLAYER! Ugh! People need to start focusing on what they do best, or make it better! Leave multiplayer for the MULTIPLAYER games, like CoD or Halo! By adding this the budget will be split for the project.
An AssassinMatch mode could be a fun game of paranoia. Is he in the haystack? No, he's opted for Death From Above! Block! A smoke bomb? Get clear... great, he's blended into the crowd... this is gonna be tricky... there! Chuck a knife into his leg, slow him down! Pounce and DEAD NOW, BITCH! Oh crap, guards saw me do it! Time to visit Elsewhereville, ASAP!
It would be interesting to see what they do.
Can't believe I'm saying this, but Home did that mission better than AC :|
As for the actualy mode, I want to see some co-op missions with multiple assassination targets and split-up directions after the organized murder has been done. Desmond goes east, Lucy runs west, GO! GO! GO!
