Next 2K Boston game to be 'something very different' photo

In an interview with gamesindustry.biz, founder and Creative Director of 2K Boston Ken Levine said that the next game coming from the studio will be “very, very different” than BioShock. What exactly will be different? Levine was not specific, but he said that the new game will focus on “story, gameplay and people’s relationship with the game over the long term,” which is great considering that most games have none of the above.

According to Levine, 2K Boston have answered a call to “swing for the fences [again]” with their upcoming title. Levine had this to say about the pre-production process:

The goal for our next project is something very, very different, so it's a little scary - because we don't know what it is, exactly. We're getting a much clearer sense every single day in terms of what we're doing, deciding what's in and out of the game. But it's going to be aggressive.
I’m all about “aggressive” games that tackle abstract concepts like a person’s relationship with a videogame. Bring it on, Mr. Levine. I'm ready to build long-lasting relationships with more oversized monsters in scuba suits and little girls with massive syringes.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what they pull out next, while other 2K studios begin milking BioShock for all it is worth.

Can lightning strike again? One of the things I found so interesting about Bioshock was the setting. Art deco infused with Late 50 - early 60's retro-future influence in a destroyed under water utopia and other elements made it feel likd art in motion to me. The atmosphere and setting of the game is one of the things that keep me coming back. Of course this is a personal preference since I'm drawn to art deco designs and retro-future designs.

Now I'm not saying he can't make something as compeling as Bioshock but it'll be amazing if he can. Who knows maybe 2K will create an IP that even surpasses Bioshock. Of course Bioshock isn't perfect by any means but it is a top notch game. Whatever it is I wish them the best of luck and hope he keeps pushing the medium in interesting ways.

It's kind of weird -- I found my largest complaint with BioShock was that it wasn't immersive. I found I couldn't really tell what the area was supposed to be. I.e. am I in a park? A (nother) corridor? Is this a store room? A kitchen? Everything seemed so ... similar. I mean, you'll go down a metal corridor, into a grsas-filled room about 10x20 feet, and then back into a metal corridor. What was that grass room? What was it for?

I liked the art itself, but the actual putting-together-of said art didn't sway me much. There are still rooms I see screenshots of and go "Is that an arboretum or something?"

@ blackhat you know I had similar thoughts sometimes about how abruptly one area became another. I guess for me it wasn't detracting enough. But I guess different things break the illusion for us. I wasn't a big fan of the little sisters being invincible. Which is ironic cause that was one of the things that Levine called other games out on. He said he didn't like it when games forced artificial limitations on the player/game world but to me that was an example of the same thing. Granted, I understand why it had to be done but nontheless.
