Newsflash: 3D Dot Game Heroes is not just a Zelda rip-off photo

You know what I'm sick of? The idiots who are writing off From Software's 3D Dot Game Heroes because they have no concept of irony and can only see a "Zelda rip-off." These people are stupid and can't see an inch in front of their faces.

For those who don't know, 3D Dot Game Heroes is a brilliant looking PS3 parody that pays homage and pokes fun at 8-bit adventure games, with The Legend of Zelda serving as a clear foundation. It's supposed to have the same look and feel as an old Zelda game. That's the point and that's the joke. It's looking like it'll be a blast and the design is absolutely gorgeous.

Calling 3D Dot Game Heroes a rip off of Zelda is like saying that The Naked Gun rips off James Bond. Part of the fun of the game is the fact that it does play like Zelda. If you're going to write the game off just because you don't have a sense of humor, you're a fool to yourself. You're also probably the same kind of person that thinks everybody who is British is just trying to copy Yahtzee.

Anyway, there's a new gameplay video that you can watch after the jump. A few of you won't be able to look past the deliberate similarities and whine about plagiarism. Don't worry though, it's just that you're an imbecile. Your mother won't love you any less.

I haven't seen anyone complaining, but it does seem silly to call it a rip-off of Zelda.

First of all: this game looks incredible and I demand it to come stateside. Second: even if we discard all the ingenious irony here, ripping off zelda is not a bad thing. Hell, the Darksiders devs admit to blatantly doing so, and it's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to that game as well.

Thank you for backing this game up, Jim. You're my favoritest dtoid editor evar.

I think we are not understanding the definition of "Parody"

This game is not really a parody. Its Zelda done in a different style. It looks awesome and I would probably pick it up. But it is certainly not parody.

ChristRogue:

The developers have said the game is intended to send up the action RPG genre. So yeah, it's being designed as a parody.

Well it certainly LOOKS fantastic - a unique art direction I've not seen before. Wonderful stuff.

Of course, I'll still have to wait until a review comes out. I mean, how does this game PLAY? How long does it last? How are the controls. Those are blanks for me.

At the very least, though, I think a lot of people are going to be very interested.

The devs can say whatever they want, outside of this giant sword, it doesn't even seem like they've even tried to make it any different from Zelda after having seen that first video. I don't care, I'm definitely going to buy this game, but as the videos stand this game is more Zelda than parody of Zelda, like the Epic Movie of Zelda "parodies". Don't over-extend "parody" to try and cover up the similarities, and even calling them similarities is being too generous.

There's one part in the first video that looks like they're also ripping off Seiken Densetsu 1 (Final Fantasy Adventure in the US and Mystic Quest in EU). The part with the grappling hook in particular.

The only Zelda game I've completed and finished was the one on the Gameboy original (name fails me lol) - this looks like a lot of fun though and I might get it.

I don't understand about the backlash about it though, it's like people saying Castle Crashers is a Golden Axe rip-off. Yes you beat up the little thieves for items, but I didn't start screaming at the television. I was more impressed by the homage.

To be a parody, it technically has to do something different or funny. And it does do graphics differently, but that still doesn't make it a parody because it's not making any comment on the original graphics, they're just different. And they seem to be the only thing that is even remotely different (judging from the trailer, I obviously haven't seen the whole game) Naked gun doesn't do everything the same as James Bond, and then just replace Sean Connery with Leslie Nielsen and add a sepia filter to the movie.

Haven't you heard? THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! (British sounding person on the internet). From now on I shall call you Yahtzee #2.

These are the first clips I've seen that make it seem like parody, as opposed to tribute, or homage. I'm not calling it a rip-off though, it definitely looks interesting.

Now I wonder what inspired this rage that not even fox news can incite from you.

But the game DOES say something about the graphics. The very plot of the game involves the king deciding that he's sick of the world being in 2D and deciding that everything will have three dimensions from now on. How is that not worth even a smirk?

Man I do want this game. Zelda is a great series so a game being likened to that is a big complement. The videos are great. I hope the next one is a 16 bit style.

This game does look awesome but videos and pictures have just been raising more questions. If you check the page on gametrailers you will see character and presumably monster and NPC editors... Is the game grounded in an online user community? If you check the site http://www.3d-heroes.net/main/ you will also see that the characters shown look like class based ones(warrior, prince/princess, wizard) but the item sets look the same. And the game comes out in NOVEMBER in Japan. More details please! I really think it is an RPG version of LBP.

Humor varies from person to person, If I see an old lady fall down because she was being a bitch about a seat on the bus today about how I "didn't get up fast enough and those seats are for seniors" and her wrinkly ass falls down and I laugh and get looks and now my left arm hurts.

so ya, it seems funny to me, looks like a good parody so far. Also total gameplay time we have seen of it amounts to less then 5 minutes so you can't really judge that its a "Ripoff" yet anyway.

This game looks really cool, it might actually convince me to buy a PS3. They're doing a good job of paying homage to the retro style while still making it look awesome.

( also, lol at "Lego Zelda," I'm calling it that from now on )

@Jim:
That doesn't say anything about Zelda's graphics, other than they were 2D. Not exactly side-splitting commentary. To be a parody they would have to maybe say something about how Link can't see past a certain point until he changes screens, or maybe how everybody looks really stout, or something. Zelda graphics weren't that weird or different, other than being an overhead view, which makes them kind of a shitty thing to parody. Much easier things to parody would be dialogue, puzzles, or weapons. It's not in English, so I can't comment on the dialogue, I haven't seen any puzzles, and the sword is cool, but again, not really a parody. If this is a parody, then so is Meet the Spartans.
Springsteen's Avatar - Comment posted on 10/01/2009 11:49

I love it as much as I could and will buy it as soon as it is released. However, it does lend a little too much from Zelda. Not that it makes me like the game less, but the parody seems a little lost among the almost 1:1 transition of gameplay elements.

It's deffinitely not a pejorative rip-off, but it does mimic a little too much, too close from the Zelda series, specially in the first video.

By the way, I can't express how ridiculous, unneeded and stupid I find that huge sword to be. I hope the final game is WAY harder and has more inventive combat options than it seems to be.
