New York City schools using Wii Fit to help kids lose weight photo

AP is reporting that 25 New York City middle schools are using Wii Fit in afterschool weight loss programs. Five of those schools were graciously donated a Wii and the game by Nintendo.

The article mentions that the kids are bowling and playing games of tennis. That’s not exactly Wii Fit, but hey, WiiSports has just as much real fitness value. Which, by my estimation, is around zero.

Here’s the thing, NYC schools. The key to losing weight is making solid, healthy food choices and exercising. Virtual bowling or balance board hula hooping is neither of those things. Get the garbage food out of your cafeterias, preach that McDonalds is a sin, and get a treadmill, guys. It’s really that easy.

So you're saying that technology can't magically solve all our problems? Crap!

There was a guy on another site who reportedly lost weight "seriously" playing both WiiSports and WiiFit. Yeah, here we are. Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

I mean, you're doing actual work as opposed to sitting on your arse all day playing games normally, so it has to count for something, I presume.

Oh, shit, forgot to mention this in my last one.

A few years ago, I read that some schools in my area actually had DDR machines (not the actual arcade cabinets, such a shame XD) but had the pads and PS2 or something, and that'd count as their working-out. Why does all of the cool stuff have to happen eons after I leave?! Grr.

I'm still bitter after having no recess after grade school. That was my favorite part of the day!

With something like Wii Fit, you get out of it what you put into it. If you're an adult serious about being healthy, anything can help. But for school kids? Put down the controller and play some fucking dodgeball.

Don't talk about my awesome hometown like that.

No wonder so many kids are overweight and obese; even the adults running schools don't know shit about weight loss.

Is Wii Fit or Wii Sports as good as doing the 'real thing'? No I don't think anybody is claiming that though. The key is that doing exercise while playing on a Wii is far more engaging to most people than playing actual real sports.

Take the conclusion of this study

Too often people look at regular exercise as a
chore. Our hope is that new exergames like Wii
will entice non-exercisers to get up off the couch
and realize that fitness can, in fact, be fun.

Playing Wii Sports Tennis for half an hour is probably half an hour longer than most people have actually played tennis for in their life.

If they are stopping at using a Wii to help get people fit then they are failing, if they are using it as a way to get people interested, as a steppping stone then I don't really see the problem.

@power-glove sorry to offend . i grew up in rochester NY. but i used to do Telecomm work in NYC/Manhattan(the main parts im talking about, not all of NY state is bad) and i have seen the worst conditions from street to roof levels i can think of.
walking down the street to a job and smell nothing but piss and shit wafting from alleys that are filled with smashed/empty beer bottles. old decaying electrical wiring that you cant walk near for fear of getting electrocuted. buildings with more wood covered windows than glass ones. yeah some parts are nice. but face it its a shit hole. ive been there. alot.

I also remember that many during the recess spent the time trading Pokemon or playing cards.

Brad, sooner or later, Broccoli will give you Cancer.

Nothing it healthy anymore. So just leave it.

Besides, they're beginning to outlaw dodgeball. WHAT THE FUCK ELSE are kids supposed to do, cause you damn well know they won't do push-ups and sit-ups and run all day....

I agree with Brad too. Also, If a child is "obese" it means one of two things: A) They are born that way and there really isn't much you can do about it or B)There parents fail at nourishing them properly, which you can't fix either. I don't see how this helps.

What they need is DDR.

I'm in the "Anything is better than nothing" crowd. Until the schools wise up and give children recess again and let them run around and play outside some, this is the best we're going to get. It's better than shoveling food in their faces and sitting them back down at a desk to study.

I agree with Gen Eric. This definitely isn't a bad thing, but you are right... The junk needs to be taken out of the cafeteria and actual exercise needs to be suggested.

Yup, DDR is what they need. That actually works you know.

Let's face it. DDR is strictly aerobic. Wii Fit includes yoga, strength training (which really *does* work), aerobics, and some really cute balance games.

From a pure gaming standpoint is DDR going to have a larger "fun" factor? Oh, hell, yes. But if they're looking for a more rounded exercise and strength platform, Wii Fit is the winner there.

Yup, DDR is what they need. That actually works you know.

So does Wii Fit. I and several other Dtoiders are proof of it.
