Home #Xbox 360

Some people get off on this kind of thing, and if you're one of those oddballs, then please enjoy the above video which shows off the new Xbox 360 dashboard, as featured in the upcoming Fall Update.

The video shows off the new game installation feature, and displays that you'll need a hard copy of the disc in order to run anything. There was already talk of this, and the new footage seems to confirm it.

Everything looks all flashy and swish, but is anyone convinced that this is the right step forward for Microsoft? Personally, I think the new dashboard appears rather decent, but I'm mostly pleased that The 'Soft still apparently gives a stuff about the Xbox 360 and isn't looking to cut-and-run, as I'd originally considered. I hope forced installs don't become prolific, however. I really don't fancy shelling out extra bucks for more storage. Wait, hoping MS won't find a way to force more cash out of us? What am I saying?

[Thanks, Detry]

Microsoft not doing everything in their power to have all of our money is something out of some alternate dimension.

Was wondering if someone around here was gonna pick up on this. Still not happy with the new dashboard, but at least it appears as though they are not completely dicking around.

I don't understand why you would do an install of a game if you still need the disc? Seems like a waste of space to me. I don't want to buy a new hard drive.

Lessen load times? Otherwise its an exercise in MS BS.

@CALkulon

Well some games are worth the wait. Lessening load times takes the feeling of suspense out of the game.

You install the game so it doesnt need to read the disc (just check that its there, proving you own it). This makes it faster to load (and should be more so than on ps3, assuming im correct that ps3 installs are not full) and probably more importantly to 360 gamers, makes it not make so much god damn noise.

It shouldnt be mandatory for consoles, but its a nice option. Hopefully MS wont start to force it on us.

Im looking foward to the new dashboard because from a usability point of view, the current one is pretty bad. The new one looks better so far.

You could install it for shorter loading times, like CALkulon said, or choose not to. Too bad you still need the disc, otherwise a new HDD would be worth it if you could just dump discs to your HDD and play them for free ;)

Pft. The wait before GTAIV nearly killed me! Likewise DMC4.

This is a brilliant idea, my xbox DVD drive is so noisey!!PLus you get a bonus of quicker load times. MS have obviously been listening to complaints of noisey boxes and tried to rectify it for everyone not just newly made boxes.
I doubt installs will become manadatory otherwise you alienate the arcade/core owners.

Meh, having to put the disc in is kinda lame.

What's infinitely lamer is that I want to copy stuff to the hard drive because the DVD drive is so noisy, but can't justify paying for the 120GB extorto-drive for it to be worth doing.. Fucking Microsoft.

I think the new dashboard looks crap, I hope we are not forced to use it and have a choice/setting of using the original one instead of being forced to use this one.

P.S. What happens to peeps who have purchased wallpapers for there dashboard in the past (are they now useless)?

not too impressed with the dashboard,i would have liked to see how long to took to play GTA4 from the harddrive.

I don't think the new dashboard is crap, I think it's just going overboard on the whole "minimalist" look. It looks easy to use but boring as hell. They'll probably throw some themes and such out there to remedy that though.

Your old themes work with the new dashboard!

@Timmeh

If you didn't have to put the disc in the tray, people would just rent games, copy them to the HD, then return them back.

Uh, 360 gamers constantly bitched about PS3 having installs... its awesome of course now that they get to do it...I love the idea myself, since my 360's drive was by far the worst part of the machine noise wise....Only problem I see is MS's redicky price on their HDD's. Redicky.

I'm not really digging the new dashboard. It looks way too bland. I'm not a fan of the layout of Media Center in general, which this is obviously based on. This new layout is somewhat confusing, just as the last layout was, and this time it has the extra spiff of also being boring.

I like how on my Xbox 360, when I leave a game in the console, or put one in after start up, I go straight to playing the video game and not have to worry about dashboards and such.

It would be cool to have the full install for Culdsept Saga.. Everytime it shows a card on the screen (and when it shows you the cards you won at the end of the match) it has to load each card and the disk spinning up can sometimes freeze the game somewhat I've noticed.

I agree with the likes of nintendoll and others. Seem they went overboard on the whole minimal aspect. Seems like screen space is being wasted compared to the old dashboard.

Time will tell of course but I have some doubt

I was happy with the blades they should have just used the damne space that was doing NOTHING on the blades.

now I have to have this ugly ass windows vista aerog lass wannabe bastard step child, with it's ugly Xii mii wannabe things.

and you have to download the upgrade.
Soon enough your xbox 360 disc will h ave the upgrade on it and force you to upgrade if youw ant to keep playing games like they have been.

nintendoll, it maybe for future 360 games, with more and more games now needing larger disc space and 360 having no blu-ray. They may start needing to release future titles on multiple disc. Such as MGS4 on 360. Which could come on 3 disc. By storing disc 2 and 3 on your 360 HDD. There's no need for disc swapping.

I like your attitude, you will get far in life.... You answer a question I asked in which Kryptinite had already kindly in a nice manner gave the answer along with a nice screenshot. I do not undrstand why you felt the need to go over this again... we are not blind.

My other question of is the new dashboard a choice or is it forced upon us, as far as I can tell, Is not provided with your link to Major Nelson blogg.

So basically you have been of no use at all.

Please can you STFU or change your attitude. thankyou.
