New Xbox 360 65nm chipset = cheaper 360s and a cure for cancer / RROD photo

We all knew it was only a matter of time, and now it looks as if that time has come: Microsoft is implementing codename Falcon in order to reduce overheating in 360s and also greatly reduce the price of manafacturing costs which will translate to a long-overdue price drop across all SKU's. Not a moment too soon either, as Sony has already unwillingly announced the PSDoorstop is getting it's own price rolled back.

Now if only there was a way Microsoft could announce this price cut in a grand fashion, perhaps like a show or some kind of big press event, an expo perhaps. If only...

Falcon is the name for the latest internal electronics in the Xbox 360. It will have an IBM microprocessor and an AMD/ATI graphics chip that are manufactured in a 65-nanometer production process. These are cost-reduced chips that do the same thing as their 90-nanometer predecessors, but they’re smaller.

With smaller chips, Microsoft gets a bunch of benefits. They won’t generate as much heat. So the risks of overheating — one of the main reasons behind Microsoft’s billion-dollar write-off for repairs and extended warranties — are much lower. The chips may also cost half of what it took to make them before because they use less material and fewer manufacturing steps to produce.

Everyone knows that console makers cut the prices and costs on their consoles over time. But you may not be aware that the primary chips – microprocessor, graphics, and the Ana video processing chip – are the bulk of the cost of the machine. Microsoft started making the Xbox 360s in August, 2005, with a 90-nanometer process. It is overdue to switch to the newest technology, 65 nanometers, but that day has finally come. It may be some time — a year, maybe two — before it moves on the a 45-nanometer process.

fo' sho. I wonder if I claim warranty on my box if I'll get a new 45nm box instead of an old 90.

The Elites are more stable anyway. You may want to hold onto your receipt for the impending price drop, however...

Good question, skeeblar. Now that the 360 has a 3 year warranty, will older-revision boards and chips with RROD issues be replaced with newer ones? Which would be more cost effective for MS? Is this part of that $1 billion dollar budget MS has planned?

Microsoft will probably not drop the price too drastically, the machine will sell very well at christmas with GTA, Halo etc not to mention the unknown E3 announcements. I reckon a series of small drops so that it does not offend the masses who have one now.

If the 360 drops to $200, it will be #1 this year.

Unless the Wii drops to $150.

Then, the usual Wii dominance will continue as usual.

I see a 50$ drop, they have no reason to go lower.

Tron, I think the Wii will continue to dominate either way. There are five gamers in my office who will buy next-gen systems (360/PS3/both). There are 50 other employees who want a Wii who would normally not buy any consoles. They'll buy a couple games, get bored with it, and it'll collect dust until the family Christmas party.

If the RROD dropped the amount of faulty 360's to a level of that of the PS3, what would be the 360's biggest flaw? No Blu-Ray?
William Haley's Avatar
William Haley at 07/09/2007 17:38
If people wanted Blu-Ray, they'd buy a Blu Ray player. The 360 plays games, and lots of good ones at that.

The 360 is expected to see a $50 drop tomorrow, except for the Elite which may go as low as $399, in which case Sony will probably take a bunch of pills and lock themselves in the bathroom.

I am still waiting on the 65nm chip before I purchase a 360. It's too damn loud and runs too hot otherwise. C'mon microsoft, you might not screw this one up! (but you probably will)

Buck- Are casual gamers really that lame? I work with too hot girls who are obseased with the Wii, who never liked video games before.

I know it's easy for most of us to doubt the casual gamers taste, but they seen pretty intense about their love of the Wii.

Wii Sports on Monday, Wii Play on Tues, Wario Ware on Wed, Big Brain on Thurs, and Rayman on Friday. They call it their "Force Five", each game for a half an hour on it's day. They don't seem to be getting sick of it.

Tron, I love casual gamers and I'm not taking stabs at the Wii as much as I'm giving my opinion of what will happen to it. Look, I think the Wii will sell the most hardware this generation, but I do expect software sales to eventually start to fade out. For each girl that you mentioned, I can name 10 girls who loved it at first and now aren't even interested in playing it even at one of our Wii parties. How long have they had the Wii? How much will they be playing it next month? What about the month after that?

Well Tron, I personally know Megan Fox. Even though she has a Wii, she doesn't play it as often as Nintendo says she should, choosing instead to model in front of a giant fan and lift up the hoods of cars to expose her sexiness to whoever happens to be passing by.

It is pretty much collecting dust in the corner at the moment. Once in a while I'll bust it out when I'm at her place, but she doesn't buy many games.

I was her date to the Transformers premier in New Zealand, by the way. It was a blast, for those who were curious.

Well, I live in Jessica Alba's vagina, so there.

Anyway, this is good news. I don't think there will be a huge difference to the RROD epidemic, but there will probably be some small decrease.

I swear to god, every single time I buy a console the price ends up dropping within a month or two. It happened with the PS2, it happened with the Gamecube, it happened with the DS, and now it's happening with the 360. And this especially sucks because I went ahead and bought the extended 360 warranty solely so I would be covered in case of the RROD, and then of course 2 weeks later they announce their warranty extension.

I would really appreciate a step-up type program for current 360 owners to get their consoles upgraded to the 65nm glory.

The problem with the 360 is that it was designed by dumb americans.. Giving it an amazing 33% failure rating, american geeks need to leave the hardware manufaturing to the japs. At least they know how to make a goods system. my 360 sounds like a dam helicopter taking off.
