New Wii Zelda aims to be 'player friendly' photo

The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto believes that recent games in the iconic series have grown a little too complex after years of convolution. As often seems to be the case with venerable franchises, the world famous developer has stated that the upcoming Wii sequel will go back to basics with a more "player friendly" control scheme.

"For us, it is important to the to optimise gameplay and make the controls easier," says Miyamoto. "We do our best to make the controls player friendly, since Zelda has become complicated."

The impish designer adds that the game will be surprising, though he won't say how: "For us, two things are important: to meet expectations and to surprise people. How we do it this time, I will not reveal. Normally, we create the video sequences, and these sequences are expanded. But this time we started with the game structure. And then with the video sequences. So this time it was reversed. Therefore, we have had little so far from the game to show. But will publish a lot close to the game's completion."

So far, all we know about the new Wii Zelda comes from a teaser image. Miyamoto has promised that this image will bear relevance at E3, where the game is expected to get its full reveal. Can you wait? We really can't. At the very least, it'll mean we get a new header image for these stories!

I don't know how I feel about this news. I just hope they don't take the whole "player friendly" approach too far.

Suppose when 90% of your exclusive platform's userbase are used to playing nothing more than WiiSports and WiiFit you want your game to be as simple as possible.

As long as player friendly doesn't interrupt the flow the series has maintained what with it's puzzles and all, and as long as the world isn't screwed around with, I'm fine.

I'll reserve judgement. Player friendly doesn't always mean what I think it conjures up in a lot of our heads. Mine included.

However complicated the Zelda games are not. That's why they maintain their popularity.

hopefully simplifying does not mean limiting options or making the game as easy as the DS ones

I thought the last one was fairly simple as well.

Is Zelda getting an auto-attack? I guess simpletons have money too.

Control scheme of Twilight Princess Wii version was little bit uncomfortable, especially when changing tools.

Fishing was fun though.

Zelda is player friendly? Give us puzzles that requires rational logic, not something that we can't figure out unless we read a strategy guide.

How could Zelda get any more player friendly? Being much simpler would result in a nearly one button control scheme.

I doubt this means a thing for the puzzle side of the game, which is where the only real part of the difficulty curve even lies. Spirit Tracks had some of my favorite puzzles since Majora's Mask.

Some of the interaction between Zelda and Link was a little difficult, though. Perhaps next time some optional 2nd player component could be added for co-upish stuff like that.

This probably means tools will handle more like they did in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Just as long as I don't point the wiimote to make Link run. . .

So going off this it explains why I never got far into every previous Zelda game, they hated the people who played the game by pushing it to being unplayable by the controls & just wanted our $$.

Taking it back to the basics? It would be awesome if the game becomes what the first Zelda was. Simple. Giving a bit of instructions as to what to do in the game and they're good to go. I'm hyped for E3.

Nintendo's trying too hard to draw in a crowd that has no interest in any games with any sort of complexity and they're isolating their actual fanbase.

After the train wrecks that were the DS Zeldas, I've lost all interest in the series; this isn't doing anything to restore my faith.

I hope the story will be great! As much as Mario games are gameplay-driven, I see Zelda games as story-driven.

Spirit Tracks, minus the long train rides (after a while) was very simply controlled, and it was one of the harder zelda games I've played in a while so I know Miyamoto can simplify controls w/o screwing up gameplay.

Normally this kind of talk scares me, but considering how awesome Mario's latest offerings have been, I guess I'll give Miyamoto the benefit of the doubt.

Exactly what watwatwat said. Alienating the real gamers by trying to sell complex games to casuals that just wanted WiiSports and WiiFit.

There's a saying in there somewhere, something about trying to spread yourself too thinly, or trying to cover too many bases, jack of all trades, something like that.

It's a wierd situation where going after EVERYONE has paid of for nintendo so far, cash wise, but becomming home of the waggle, home of the shovelware, home of the games that play themselves, they may well alienate the actual gamers that made them what they were, ya know, before this who wii thing.

As far as I'm concerned, Nintendo is now a toy company, who's toys happen to be like toy games consoles, not a company i would look to for my gaming needs.

IMHO.

@Sexualchocolate: I see you been dippin' into that Haterade.

I, personally, would like to hear/read some more about what Shiggie's talking about before passing judgement. I enjoyed Twilight Princess (gasp! No, say it isn't so!), even if I thought some of the puzzles were balls-hard, and would love to see more.

I agree with the bajillion comments above that Zelda's controls are not at all complicated. But then, how long have we all been playing Zelda games?

At first I was like, "fuck that, I like my games difficult".

Then I realized he wasn't talking about that, and was talking about playability. And Twilight Princess had a far too complicated control scheme for a game like it. It didn't need to be anywhere near that complicated.

I have faith in Miyamoto. Unless the word Wii is in the title.

Maybe FF XII control scheme: just press one button to finish the game.

On another note. I find it kind of strange and pretty fucking stupid to design the video sequences first. Honestly?? What a genious ideo to try it the other way round. I seriously can't believe this... *shakes head*

Twilight Princess had balls-hard puzzles. We must have played different games because that was one of the easiest games I have ever played.

This is exactly what I hated about Twilight Princess...it held my hand every step of the way. Never did I feel free to think for myself on how to solve something. Every part if every dungeon had the most generic explanation, not to mention the boss fights. I'm hoping this game holds true to the others in the series, but my expectations are not as high.
