New Vanquish screenshots

New Vanquish screenshots photo

SEGA has released another 23 screenshots of Vanquish. As you should expect by now, they're gorgeous.

I can't help but find it weird when games persist in using the Russians as the enemy. Particularly in a futuristic setting. I realize that they've regained some of their former strength, but it still surprises me whenever we cling to the Cold War for our enemies. I would think we have enough monsters in the world to work with that we wouldn't have to continue to rely on the old ones.

Problem.

When a games company puts modern "enemies" into games people kick up a shit storm.

Were the Russians ever REALLY an enemy? Or was it just scaremongering (Like the Taliban) and American fear of communism proving how broken and greedy the capitalist system really is?

Sure the Russian's fought back, but who actually started it?

Somebody should put the Americans or British as the enemy. They frankly deserve it.

Also, I would like to see TheOldHouse's suggestion. That would be quite interesting, both story-wise, and reaction-wise.

It is easier to keep one bad guy in mind that everyone knows, than referring to anything else. Devs need to handle the customer as a dumbass, so they have to put a well known "enemy" in these kind of games otherwise the morons can't handle it -.-"

I support TheOldHouse's idea, sounds motherfucking brilliant... they could make a game where you're one of the poor Vietnamese getting bombed to hell and then joins a guerilla-force to chase the american pigs out of your own home country :-)))))

@ Sexualchocolate - If you British weren't such a bunch of pampered little pussies, maybe you'd have real enemies like the rest of us.

Anyway.

Yeah, this game looks awesome.

In defence of sexual chocolate at lest his view point isn't ripped straight from a "rah rah America" fox news broadcast.

America starts more shit than it can handle with it's ridiculous mission to spread its jaded version of democracy and freedom to other nations, then screams blue murder when the "opposing forces" retaliate.

So it's now so popular to jump into the "wah wah we hate those American stupid heads" club that it's been declared wrong for Americans to represent the protagonists at anytime. Even in a work of fiction.

I guess I understand where opinions like Sexualchocolate's come from a bit. We all know how life in Afghanistan was hunky dory before the coalition arrived. A civil war spanning decades with millions of casualties couldn't have been all bad. Having the civilian casualties drop to just a few thousand a year from the tens of thousands was is just too much change. The 30 billion pumped into infrastructure by the US alone must be a horrible thing too. Even India jumped on the wagon throwing in a couple billion. No one likes accepting charity.

I'm starting to think you guys are right. The US and it's allies should have stayed out of Afghanistan and the middle east. They should have just fired a few hundred rockets over the mountains and wiped the place out. Probably would have been cheaper, and members of the club for Haters of America were going to piss and moan no matter what they did.

Russia and Japan have been arguing over ownership of the Kuril islands (occupied by Russia currently) since the end of WWII. Japan gets its revenge by having a few bars with door signs reading "Japanese Only"... written specifically in Russian, and by making Russia the bad guys in quite a few video games.

Is it just me or does that enemy pictured look decidedly female?

It was a pretty slim demo though so who can really know what the finihed product will be like.

Ah, nothing says' 'Smug, insular pap' like young teens in political discussions.

To the greater question, 'The Soviet Union' is basically kitsch. Just like the frequent Nazi set-ups (Vampire Nazi's, occult Nazi's etc.). It's how the Fallout series plays it.

Why developers/writers use the Soviet Union/Cold-war scenarios:

1. Not in the least, Russia's 'Soviet' period saw millions killed, so it's kind of hard to quibble with 'villain' status.

2. It's well-known history. The cold-war has been fodder for black humor for 5 decades plus. Everyone get's the set-up.

3. It's 'safe'. The Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore. The cold-war is such well-tread material in the pop culture poltergeist, you can play out a fantasy scenario without even really pushing any political buttons. It just all looks 'ironic' or tongue-in-cheek. Again, See: Fallout

Nazi/Soviet stuff is kitsch. If you're looking for futuristic Black and Tans, Tamil Tigers, the Zetas, etc., you're over-thinking the intention of the endeavor.

That article is about the rampant corruption amongst politicians in Russia. They're like the mafia, forcing multinational corporations to pay "bribes" so that they don't abuse their political power. It's like paying for "protection".

Only one example of how shitty Russia really is these days.

I would like to mention that the enemies are "The Order of the Russian Star", an ultra-nationalist group that took over Russia right before the events of the game, not necessarily Russia itself. So whether or not that makes a difference is up to you guys.

Game still looks great, on that note.

Im 28 and world politics is a hobby of mine. When the posts turn to politics and the last line of the original article pretty much guides me that way then that's what im going to talk about. I don't know why anyone is complaining about this game using Russians because you're kinda missing the point. I mean, just look at how fucking ridiculous the Russians are in this game in the first place and how amazingly American that the protagonists are. It's pretty obvious that it's a huge satire on the RUSSIA ATTACKS AMURIKA trope that's dominating games through a Japanese lens (or perhaps even a commentary on Western games in the first place).

Besides, it's a god-damn Platinum game. It's p

I'm surprised that Sega is releasing screenshots for a game anybody can demo. Granted, some people aren't connected to the Internet with their consoles, but I would imagine that any people who know enough about games to follow blogs would have the ability to not only see stills, or even videos, but play the game in motion.

First you said, "America starts more shit than it can handle with it's ridiculous mission to spread its jaded version of democracy and freedom to other nations, then screams blue murder when the "opposing forces" retaliate."

Then you said - in response to eternaldeathslayer's news article - "I don't live in America so I am lacking in the pre-requisite to morally judge an entire country based on the deeds of the few with power." You're basically saying that only Americans have the capacity to judge other nation's (in this case Russia, from eternaldeathslayer's article).

So if you are lacking in the pre-requisite to morally judge an entire country (that you state you do NOT live in), why is your first statement above condemning an entire country (America)?

Contradict yourself much?
