One of the surprise reveals from tonight's Spike VGAs was the announcement of a new True Crime game. The game looks to take place in Hong Kong and will see you playing as an undercover cop who's trying to make his way into the Triads.
The last two games in the True Crimes series were pretty, well, bad. The games were an attempt to capitalize on the Grand Theft Auto hype, but they never really took off. Not last generation anyway. The Saint's Row series has done a great job of taking much of GTA's spotlight this gen and maybe True Crime can do the same.
What do you think? Did you like True Crime? Looking forward to the Hong Kong setting?
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

I always wanted GTA to have a decent melee fighting system and slo mo gun shooting and to take place in asia. The first streets game had 2 of the 3 but this one will complete it. I just hope its fun
wow...its prolly cuz im not sober, but that was a great trailer....this and just cause 2 look like very fun games. im a huge gta4 but had no fun with saints row 2. but im def interested in this one now.
I loved the True Crime games, love the Saints Row games... Both are just stupid fun to me. True Crime did have a lot of glitches, but they didnt bother me too much. It would be great to have Nick Kang be the main character again (I don't think thats him.. Is it?) but I'm glad to see this series hop into the next gen. *fingers crossed* for this game to be good
Finally!!!Sand box game with hong kong map. I m from hong kong and I know most GTA fans of hk are lookin forward a sand box game with hk map. but i really hope activision work more serious on the cantonese dialog, coz i heard some bad cantonese in the trailer, which heard like read by an english speaker.I truly want them find some native speaker for the dialog.
haha, i thought this was a stranglehold sequel and i nearly had a heart attack but the true crime games were actually pretty good, the first one was better than the second mainly by the main character but still, i remember a saturday morning waking up to playing that game and it was awesome, will keep this on my radar
Looks good but I doubt the game will look anywhere near that amazing when it comes out, at least on consoles. And no that is not PC elitism, it is just a statement that the tech is only there to produce those graphics at that crisp fidelity on a PC, period.
I wonder if this is even coming to my platform, probably not.
Reminds me of Black Rain, only without the awesome 80s smoke machines.
@ Jordan - Hell yes, that's exactly what I was thinking. Hopefully they'll pattern this after the first one more than the second. They were both good but the original was downright glorious, especially with the dragon and the alternate skins for the player character. My favorite alt was the Oriental lady with the tattoos.
I liked the first True Crime. It went for crazy and off the wall even farther than Saints Row. For it's time (obviously it didn't age well), it was really good.
Just the story was short. Really, really short. Like three hours length short.
And it was the only time I got to be Snoop Dogg shooting up the suburbs (talk about art imitating life).
But they got slammed for it, which is why the sequel was all serious in tone and just a GTA clone and it seemed rushed because that sequel deserved a horrible death with all the bugs it had.
So I'm a little sad that the trailer looks like it's going serious. Because there are SO MANY games of this type, you need personality. Plus, it's a video game! Have fun, go over the top.
Fingers crossed, trailer looks good graphically.
