New Super Mario Bros. 'could' outsell Modern Warfare 2 photo

Reggie Fils-Aime is a big talker, and today he's made one of his biggest statements yet, claiming that if Modern Warfare 2 and New Super Mario Bros. were on equal ground, the latter would have no problem outselling the former. Apparently it's only NSMB's position as a Wii-exclusive that's holding it back.

"Modern Warfare 2 is on two platforms. On a single platform ... absolutely. I say that unequivocally. On one particular platform, I do believe so," claims the savory Nintendo president. "You've got to give me the entire holiday selling season, so let's take it all the way through the January NPD data ... It's going to be close. Modern Warfare is a a great title. As a gamer, I look forward to it. The new Modern Warfare, I think is going to be a fantastic title. Not to discount it, it will sell well. Of course I'll play it ... I play all the content out there."

I have to say that I don't think it would be as easy as Reggie claims. Despite its status as a multiplatform game, Modern Warfare 2 may well be the biggest game launch of all time and is set to eclipse World at War, a game that spent months in the sales charts. I also believe it would depend on the platform. If MW2 and NSMB were restricted to the Wii, maybe it would be a close contest. If they were restricted to the Xbox 360, then I think MW2 would have a very clear edge.

It's very easy for the hamburger boss to say these things while there can be no competition, but the man should put his money where his meaty mouth is. C'mon, Reggie, make NSMB multi-platform!

"Modern Warfare 2 is on two platforms."
So, PS3, PC and Xbox 360 then. Wait, that's three.

Also, depending upon just how much this is like the classic games, which it looks to be rather a lot, I actually hope this sells more than MW2. Hell, it's on the Wii, and it's by Nintendo, so it could happen yet.

Big words Reggie. NSMB has now had the same amount of hype MW2 has had.

Actually I don't think anything has had the same amount of hype MW2 has, and we probably won't see such hype again until MW3. Good lord anything that hyped I find to be automatically overrated. Fun sure but I don't think it's the best game ever.

Actually, New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, a very average Mario game, outsold the original Modern Warfare by 5 million copies. The question is not if New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell Modern Warfare 2, but when will New Super Mario Bros. Wii outsell Modern Warfare 2. After all, if it's anything like Wii fit and the DS iteration, it could take a year to hit ten million copies.

Saying that it could outsell MW2 this holiday season seems a little much though, as Nintendo is very good at making games that sell in large amounts over long periods of time rather than huge amounts all at once. I would guess that Modern Warfare 2 will outsell New Super Mario Bros. in the short term.

Well, the PS3 and 360 combined installed base isn't that much bigger than the Wii install base. In fact, let's say for the sake of comparing sales of the two games they're about equal since MW2 isn't really going to sell in Japan and dual-console owners aren't going to buy a copy for their PS3 and 360. As far as comparing the two games I think Modern Warfare 2 will win.

And I'm not going to buy either game anytime soon but MW2 will be the biggest release of the year and has a lot of hype carried over from the first game whereas a lot of NSMBWii looks recycled from the DS game. Even the name "New Super Mario Bros. Wii" just makes it sound like an enhanced port of a DS game.

I would be willing to wager that even on whichever platform MW2 sells the least, it'll sell more than NSMBWii. Not that NSMBWii will sell poorly, just that MW2 will be untouchable.

You know, the guy works for Nintendo, he can't go on a publicized show and say "No, this Nintendo product will not sell better than our competitor's game."

The man's just doing his job. He sure as hell knows it's not true.

Mario Kart Wii has outsold the original Modern Warfare. NSMBW will indeed outsell MW2 on all platforms combined. Perhaps not out the gate, but eventually. Really, guys? Is that even a question?

Guys, I know it sounds laughable but, you have to remember, Mario games are famous for being slow-burners. Just look at NSMB DS, it sold MILLIONS more than Modern Warfare.

For now, I'm not going to say one will obviously sell much more than the other, there a bunch of factors that could play in (ie. MW2's insane hype, NSMB Wii being one of the first really good looking exclusives on the Wii in a while, holidays, etc.) Now I'm no analyst, but I think in the end NSMB Wii will win out, but NOT during the holiday season. The holiday season undeniably belongs to MW2. However, Mario games have immense staying power and I wouldn't be surprised if NSMB Wii was still selling millions even a year after its release.

Yeah it probably sell more than MW2. There are 50 plus million Wiis out there, and this is the only other blockbuster that the Wii will have for 2009 (Wii Soorts Resort); the 360 and PS3 have had 2 to 3 a piece for 2009, and there is maybe 60 million console between the both of them.

Anyway, just because NSMBWii will sell more doesn't mean it's better than MW 2.

As others have said, through the rest of '09 Modern Warfare will likely outsell NSMBW by a few million. But lifetime sales are heavily in NSMBW's favor. Likely by the end of next year it will outsell MW2.

That said, we seem to forget that NSMB was released during the Spring. Considering NSMBW is being released so close to Christmas, that may give it the edge it needs to outsell Modern Warfare 2. I mean, it'll be an easy sell for Mom to get it for the kids.

Does Reggie need to pick up one of his brain training games to remember how to count? I know that, crippled as it is, the PC release probably won't amount to much, but it still technically counts as a release doesn't it?

I had seen Reggie's comments on this. I think if you look at New Super Mario Bros. for DS, and the fact that it's been on the top sellers chart for like 3-4 years straight, that it could outsell Modern Warfare 2.

Most very amped-up, highly publicized games like Modern Warfare 2 will be on the top seller charts for a number of months, then slow down. But if you can make a game that stays on the charts for over a year or two, that's a massive hit, no matter how you feel about the game.

Look at GTA IV, analysts like Pachter claimed it would be the best selling game ever, and Mario Kart Wii beat it in overall sales.

We don't know what'll happen just yet. But I think in overall sales in a years time (or more), it very well could.

I think NSMB has a huge possibility to outsell MW2 in the long run. My friend just finished paying off his and my pre-order of MW2 today. I've never been interested in the Wii, in fact I would almost say I hate the thing with a passion. But this game would seriously make me buy one if only to play NSMB. And that's saying a lot.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Excite Bike World Rally, and Metroid Prime Trilogy. That's gonna have to tide me over for a long while...

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to have broad appeal and potentially become an evergreen title like the New Mario Bros. DS title which as we all know, went on to sell 18 million copies worldwide.

That is not to say that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will necessarily be as successful as the DS title but I expect the game will sell more than Super Mario Galaxy (8 million copies worldwide). Besides, the new addition of 4 player co-op should give a big reason to pick the game up for fans of the franchise since it is not just a single player title.

I really wanna believe that. Just because MW2 is such a behemoth that it would be comforting to believe it's just the hype machine.

Seriously it's a little scary how big everyone acts like this thing is gonna be.

@ Dusty - Write this down: You're an idiot if you think MW2 will have the staying time of a mario title. People will buy NSMBW in 2010. People will still be buying it in 2011, long after Treyarch has canabalized MW2's hype. Shit, super paper mario and mario galaxy are still selling. Who the fuck is buying CoDMW? No one. Those douchbags are buying Halo ODST.

It could outsell it in the long run. Probably not in the first year, although I do expect NSMBW to sell quite well.

Who knows in the long run though? If nintendo re-release it (as it has done for the original super mario brothers), then yes, over the many years it could rack up more sales than MW2.

And TheStripe: way to go, lumping everyone who has played Halo or a COD game into the category of "douchbag". Because liking one game really does tell you everything about someone, hm?

I play MW. I own Halo 3. And I also enjoy Super Mario galaxy. Funny how people can enjoy more than one type of thing, isn't it?
