New Suikoden gets a story, still not Old Suikoden's story photo

If it wasn't clear already, fellow fans, it looks like the days of Viki, Jeane, and "DIE PIG!!!" are truly over. Suikoden: The Woven Tale of a Hundred Years, the recently-announced PSP installment of the series is set in a new setting, with a new story.

As for what the story is, it seems to sound a bit like Final Fantasy X. Every hundred years or so a giant monster comes out to wreck the world. Your guy, an orphaned swordsman from the future, is whisked back in time by someone named Zephos, and must now wreck the monster before it can do its own wrecking. Presumably 108 people will be needed to do the job.

If you'll excuse me, I'm off to replay Suikoden V and cry.

Every Hundred Years a monster rends the world in PSP Suikoden [Siliconera]

Sadface.

Maybe the portable ones all get their new little fun story, and when we get a proper console game it'll be following in the steps of 1-5.

Maybe? Please?

Suikoden 5 was brilliant. The scale of it was phenomenal. Its the world that makes them Suikoden games! Buf I guess now that theres two games separating us from the Ps/Ps2 ones, we arent going back there anytime soon!

I've got a left-arm sleeve tattoo of a bunch of the Suikoden runes. I'm now pissed off forever.

That's depressing. The interconnected story was what made Suikoden so compelling. Suikoden 2 is one of the best games I've ever played, and Suikoden I and III aren't far behind. In fact, discovering Suikoden I at the local rental store, when I'd never heard of it, is one of the most important moments of my gaming life.

Suikoden 5 is a great RPG that was underrated. Among the other games in the series, I like it the most.

1,2 are also great, especially 2. But you can skip 3 and 4.

Definitely will give this one a chance but for me, Suikoden 5 still remains the best iteration.

Suikoden 3 is the under-rated gem of the series. I still rate it as one of my all time favorite RPGs. It was able to maintain the feeling of a Suikoden game while taking chances and experimenting with the core gameplay. Also, it has the strognest characterization, unlike Suikoden 1 and 2 almost the entire cast feels important; very few characters feel neglected. Such a great game...

Suikoden 2 and Suikoden 5 are also amazing; but that is fairly common knowledge as both of them get a ton of love.

Suikoden 1 is still a very fun game, but many aspects of the game just haven't held up all that well. That being said, Pahn is awesome.

4 is a horrible game.

They need to finish the series! I need a conclusion! Goddammit Konami, you owe the fans this one!

A just don't get how anyone could ever consider any other Suikoden than II as the best in the series.

Many people share your opinion...

I love Suikoden 2 and I understand why some people see it as the pinnacle of the series. However, I just like Suikoden 3 more.

I like the characters more, I like the story more. More importantly, I like how the story really makes you question who was in the right... A perfectly legitimate interpretation would be that your characters are in fact the villains who in the end thwarting the "true" heroes.

Suikoden 2 definitely had some great grey area morality within the story; but Suikoden 3 took it to a whole other level.

Another aspect that I loved was the large amount of character development; much more than half of the cast of playable characters in Suikoden 2 were fairly insignificant story wise, while Suikoden 3 made almost the entire cast feel necessary (or at the very least justified in being there). This is a huge feat and was largely accomplished through having multiple perspectives throughout the game.

So yeah, I understand where you are coming from; I hope this helps you to understand where I am coming from... :)

Suikoden II is the best in the series. Suikoden V is right behind it.

After that it's a bit of a wash. I think Suikoden III is the better RPG, but the original Suikoden is the better Suikoden, if that makes sense...

Suikoden IV has a few highlights but was mostly a rawful trainwreck.

I will say I did really love the way Suikoden III's story played out... it just seemed to have a different 'feel' to it. The 108 Star bonus was fantastic.

Loved Suikoden 3. Easily put 110 hours into my first play through. I agree on the it being underrated as I didn't get to play the second one. I feel like 3 is a lot like FF7 is to FF6 except no one played FF7 in this argument. I really did love 3 though.

Eh Fuck it I don't care just give me some Suikoden at this point. Sorta glad it's just a spin off due to being on Handheld... if everyone fucking buys this one maybe we'll get Suikoden 6 on the ps3/360

I absolutely agree with the idea that Suikoden III is an overlooked gem. The multi-textured story is one of the best I've ever encountered in a videogame, period. Chris is easily one of my all-time favorite heroines, Geddoe was awesome, and having everyone tied together with Thomas was fantastic. Even the villains of the story were excellent, I loved them just as much as I loved Chris. I have no problem admitting that S3 made me cry at least twice, especially at the end. I think I fell a little bit in love with Sarah. They tried something new, and it worked splendidly, but people complained because it was different.

Had some of the problems with map travel and random battles been handled a bit better, I would have no trouble calling it my favorite Suikoden.

I don't mind a new story, but the main one still needs installments and should at least be "finished" at some point instead of fans being left hanging.

Also... being released on PSP is like a slap in the face and peeing on a new pair of suede shoes. Want another console Suikoden.

II, V, and III, in that order. III got a lot of flak for not having a silent name-optional protagonist, but the unique structure made up for that, I think.

@xyuberx

A slap to the face for YOU, maybe. The PSP is still quite vital outside the US and Europe, and Konami has yet to announce any overseas release.

@Zarwid Thwic

They did that on the DS with Suikoden Tierkris. I guess they found the results favorable :(

@ Ninjabunny: SCEA is full of split-personality haters. 8| They denied a re-release bundle of Suikoden I & II on PSP that Japan was getting because they didn't think it was popular enough to sell. Then they end up releasing the first game on the PSN, but never anything mentioned of II (which was "better" and much more popular). Then Nintendo randomly came out of left field with Tierkreis which was... different... and had awful voice acting, but was still an amusing game nonetheless. Kept reading Konami blogs that there was more work being done on a Suikoden title. I'll just hope this isn't the only project in the works.

@ Josh: Fair enough. It's bias on my part. I angst over the fact that my PSP currently collects dust. I'd love for more worthwhile games to be released in the U.S. for it. This game would actually be one to do that for me. I will still say that I'd love a console game much more though.

The only thing that makes me happy to support this is that it most likely has the composers of the original suikoden. Come on ppl! Tierkries sported one of the best soundtracks i've ever heard on a handheld! Its up there when it comes to the soundtracks!

BTW: Suikoden III and V are my favourite rpgs of all time, V more so because of that badassery that is Sialeeds! The Jowy of V. One question remains, why can't they make VI? V was great without the original director...can't they continue?

Mind you guys, I also liked Suikoden 3. I liked the 3 (+ 1) chapter division plotline thingie. But I gotta say that dual-guy battle system is kinda weird.

Loved Suikoden 1 and 2 (especially 2). Hated 3. Haven't played 4, 5 or Tierkreis. This new one sounds like shit. Shouldn't Suikodens be about battle strategies and war affairs?

I wept as well. Goodbye old friend, you'll never be the same with Japanese George Lucas directing it.

Using this 'Million Worlds' bullshit as a story is just a lazy man's way of retconning every past story, just to create his own bland jRPG world.

Personally my favorites are II, V I, III, and I really didn't care for IV..

I was lucky enough to play the games in order as they came out. The first was fun, and a different take on the RPG genre. I loved it, but going back now I can beat the game in six hours, and really II took everything it did and made it better. I think II is among one of the greatest video game sequels ever.

The third was a mixed bag. On the one hand it had great characters, and interesting story, but the war battles fell short. I also didn't care for the regular battle system. Controlling characters by rows instead of individually.

The fourth was the weakest of the series. Not because of the concept of island nations, or your HQ being your ship. But mostly because of the bland predictable characters. Lets also face it, the True Rune Of Punishment was just a rip off of the Soul Eater without really capturing the same effect.

I think V came the closet to II. Fantastic characters, and story. War battles done right. Just great pacing throughout the entire game. I really wish we could get a Suikoden VI that built on it...

Why don't they remake 4? That would be a noble endeavor. Snow was actually a pretty interesting character, but beyond Snow there was very little to like... Redo the super simplistic battle system, add more variety to the monster types, improve the story, improve the character design for the entire cast, tighten the script, do a complete overhaul of the sailing (which was abysmal). You know, make it good. I hate the series having such a black mark in its history...
