New study allowed kids to play Manhunt photo

A recent study has been filtering through the Blogocube which suggests that violent games dramatically affect the heart rate and sleep patterns of children. The study charges kids -- aged between 12 and 15 -- with playing a non-violent game and a violent game. They are the studied using science, which provides bounty.

The violent game is said to increase heart rate significantly when compared to the non-violent one. I would consider this a no-brainer, since violent games tend to be a bit more exciting. Slightly more interesting is the suggestion that it's harder to go to bed and wake up in the morning after playing a violent game.

The part that really gets me, however, is the fact that the kids are reported to have been playing Animaniacs and ... Manhunt, an 18-rated game which is not suitable in the least for the children who took part in this study. It has been suggested that studies into the effects of adult games on minors are mostly unethical because of this very fact.

Should we really be allowing children to play these videogames in the name of science? I would warn anybody that wishes to misinterpret and twist this study to "prove" that violent games are bad might want to think about the source material, lest they find themselves indirectly endorsing minors playing adult-rated titles.

It doesn't matter. They did it for science.

FOR SCIENCE!

Of course it's harder to get a good night's sleep after playing violent videogames like Manhunt; it generates adrenaline for gods' sake!

I find that my heart rate only really increases when playing online games. And Dead or Alive.

So that Left 4 Dead demo is pretty scary for both me and my 11-year-old brother, and neither of us are even into the whole zombie subculture.

Let's compare the heartbeat of little kids watching Faces of Death to Barney. Maybe we can get all DVD movies banned from Walmart.

@Reaprar, if only there were some kinds of links between articles to find out. We can dream.

Too bad their heartrate and respiration only increased because of the frustration that the game provides :P

I wonder how researchers will ever do an appropriate study on the effects of violent games without overstepping the boundaries of ethics. While I have few problems with such a study, from a researching viewpoint, this is totally unethical; but without such a study, we'll have to rely on common sense that says it's not for them in the first place. Such a quandary...

See, this is just more terribly constructed research, and am amazed it got through ethical review.

First of all, there is a major distinction between increased heart-rate and, well ,anything remotely interesting or relevant.

Also, Manhunt? Just to measure their sleep patterns? Not even violence?

Hey, I wonder how children react to viewing hardcore porn? Oh, increased heart rate. That was a stupid idea.

Seem's like a kinda ok study. It is using real world situations. 15 yr. olds routinely buy M or 18+ games at retail stores or the parents are buying the games for them and not knowing the content of the game. Might be a better comparison if you used Mario Galaxy or something of the like.

Yes, we should allow them to play these games in the name of science. On the scale of science/medical ethical dilemmas, I'd say this ranks pretty low.

Also, pseudo-scientist-expert thread has pseudo-scientist-experts.
