We learned a few days ago that Hyde park Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film will be titled Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, and the main focus of its story will be on ... well, guess who.
Casting has begun on the new movie, and now it's been revealed that Kristin Kreuk will be playing the lead role. I'm not going to pretend that I watch television and have any idea who that is, because I don't, but the internets tell me that she's from the show Smallville.
Prior work and the size of her villes aside, Ms. Kreuk would not have been my first choice, personally. Nothing against her, mind you, but she's not ... how can I say this ... she's not very ... OK, so Wikipedia says she's got some Chinese ancestry, but come on. Chun-Li? Really? What, Ziyi Zhang was busy? Hit the comments and tell me what you guys think.

By casting Kristin, what they've done is reinforce the fear that a lot of people have that this is going to be another movie on par with the original Street Fighter flick. When you cast a chick who doesn't look even remotely Asian to play an Asian, then people gotta wonder what other liberties you'll take...
...I now feel compelled to say either Schwing or Helloooo Nurse...both of which I'm afraid would date me :(

Funny thing, when Smallville first came on I was wondering why they cast an asian chick as Lana Lang instead of a redhead.
Just because she's part Chinese doesn't mean she looks like chun-Li. That's all I'm saying.

But I honestly approve. Mxzyptik is right, she is super hot, and that's Chun-Li's point. And she does look chinese in a LOT of her pictures. I also agree with Mxzyptik about the Lana Lang casting as well. Either way, I hate her character anyways... thank god Lois is a badass and is also a mega hottie.
She got cast for smallville because outside of us nerds nobody knows who the hell Lana Lang is. So they cast a girl who looks an awful lot like Lois Lane instead.
Either way the picture of Chun-li in the link above looks a heck of alot like Ms. Kreuk. Do I think this is a good casting call...yes. Do I think a Chun-li centered movie is a good idea...no.
she would be great as a side character not as a main one. but I was wrong about Heath Ledger as the Joker and he looks fantastic for the part. So with a bit of pig tales she could look the part
Whoever takes the role must have the meaty quads to show for it, or they will be doing the character a great disservice.

I personally don't mind. But I would prefer Ziyi seeing you know...she's more Chinese than Kristen can be. Let alone she speaks chinese. it'd help.
again, I don't mind, but I'd prefer Ziyi easily. I kinda don't mind cause I drool over her ass on Smallville (well...the early smallville seasons at least.)

Should we be cool with that? Nah. We should demand more from our flicks than that they cast the chick who's the weakest actress on Smallville for a role she's only remotely qualified to play by blood, and not at all qualified to play as an actress.
Going into the whole thing thinking that they'll suck is why they do. And we, like idiots, eat it up every time.
Bad casting is half fail for a movie.
My wife is Korean, and we live in Ch1na. It's so hard trying to explain to everyone back home in Maine(super white state) that she's not Ch1nese. Hollywood knows that American's couldn't tell a Ch1nese person from a Japanese from a Korean.
Oh yeah, Antonio Banderes playing an Arab in the 13th Warrior. Also Tom Cruise playing the role of the last samurai alive.
I mean, if I want Chinese Chun Li, I can go look at decent cosplay. Chun Li doesn't look all that Asian either.

Give Allison Mack the job if you're stuck on Smallville. She might not be Chinese, but she can act AND she's stupid hot. I'd hit that so hard, anyone who could pull me out would be crowned King of England.

eh, whatever. I still don't understand what they plan to do with this movie. It's not going to explain anything different than what SFII, or the anime didn't cover. (even if the anime isn't canon, it was done so well i'll take it for a canon in a capcom world.)
