Here's a nice, long five-minute look at Star Fox 64 3D, coming soon to the Nintendo 3DS. This Japanese trailer is a full rundown of what to expect. You'll see the graphics, use of both 3DS screens and some of the updates. The only thing you won't see is the 3D effect. If you're like me you're going to play Star Fox 64 3D with the 3D slider set to off anyway.
The middle section of this video shows off the game's gyro sensor controls. They look to work well. If you're a purist, or would rather not tilt a system that displays 3D, the video shows that you can switch the game into a full button mode instead. The end of the video shows off multiplayer and how your friends faces will show up over their craft onscreen. All neat. Gimme now.
Japan gets Star Fox 64 3D next month. Thanks a lot, Peppy.

Good thing I'm not like you at all. I played Ocarina3D with the 3D slider all the way up. The graphics(lol) were amazing in Ocarina3D as well, so as long as this gets the same amount of love, I'm in.
"But Ramm, doesn't the slider set to max hurt your eyes/give you a headache/cause cancer?!?"
I agree with Rammstein. I've been playing(Ocarina) with the slider cranked high, as well. I've yet to have eye strain or fatigue... So, I will be playing Star Fox 64 3D with the slider up and the motion controls down. Can't wait!
At least they're not like Kotaku, who desperately peddle their hatred of the 3DS's 3D, backed up by random Japanese celebrities that only they know for dubious reasons.
But yeah, playing Ocarina without 3D feels wrong. And am I the only one who can move his head in conjunction with the 3DS?
I play every game with 100% 3D. The only game I turned it off for was BlazBlue CS2, but I played that for 30 minutes before I realized it was a completely shit port and threw it in my stack of games to trade in next month. The 3D wasn't even correctly presented, it caused the characters to float on top of the backgrounds they were supposed to be standing on.
But Ocarina, Ridge Racer, DOA, Mercs and every other game I have has been much better with the 3D on. The colors popped and in some cases the graphics were cleaner and had slightly more detail (Ocarina). Plus the 3D effect makes it feel like you're staring at a larger screen then you really are, which is cool.
SF64 will be no exception, unless Ninty completely botches the 3D. But other than some ghosting on solid black surfaces, they did great with OOT. And SF seems like it will genuinely benefit from the 3D effect.
Why didn't the Wii do this shit? The 3DS is already doing an awesome job of repackaging classics to me, and honestly, I've been having more fun with the handheld than I pretty much ever had with the Wii. Nintendo did it last generation with the Gamecube - hardly ever used my 'Cube - gamed all day and night with my GBA and DS.
@Ramm, Artemus
YAH BABY! I've been playing Ocarina with the 3D slider up all the way 100% of the time, and I've yet to have eye fatigue. The graphics are MUCH sharper with it on, and honestly, I can't imagine playing with it off ever again.
@Master
During tricky arrow shots, sometimes I'll turn down the 3D, if I'm lying down playing it. But that's for about 5 seconds per play session.
I love how the water gets an extra shine when 3D goes on with Ocarina of time, I hope they add some exclusive shines and other things with 3D with Starfox.
But did anyone notice that random Asteroid disappearing completely?
I don't think they're going to fix that.
"The middle section of this video shows off the game's gyro sensor controls. They look to work well."
I get this weird feeling, Dale, that people are going to complain till they get the feeling for it, if only because they won't get it at first.. I mean, even I complained to myself a little about the sensitivity of those controls in Ocarina before I got used to them, so I can see it being 100 fold for a game where a slight turn means potential death.
i actually dont mind the gyro feature. when they first said the 3ds had one i was pretty meh about it. but after playing ocarina3d i love it. i prefered it to the circle pad aiming surprisingly.
@tgbeowulf
I'm glad, for one, that the 3DS's big releases so far require no stylus input.
Stylus is old tech. Apple proved that multi-touch can eliminate the need for any peripherals, and hopefully Nintendo can get on board with multi-touch sometime in the future - or just keep trucking with tactile controls, and gyroscopes.
I tried playing Ocarina of Time with the slider at maximum; however, I get some really bad ghosting when I do that. It's easier to just slide it down to 25% or so, rather than have to deal with whatever kind of sweet spot they had in mind.
It may just be that my eyes have difficulty seeing that degree of 3-D though.
I kinda' like the 3D myself. It's that tipsy-doodle control bullshit that I can't stand. Can I just fly the fucking ship with the control pad for fuck's sake?
When was the last time you got in a plane and the pilot was trying to control the trajectory goddam, tilting clipboard. Jets have CONTROLS, cars have CONTROLS. Can I just fly Fox's fucking ship please?
And considering the narrow window through which the 3D must be observed in order for it to be effective, why the fuck do they design a game where I'm whipping the view screen around to steer?!?
FUCKING KIDS and their MTVVIDEOGAMES! Get off my lawn!
To elaborate on my earlier comment, the graphics in Ocarina3D were even better than I remember. I don't know if it was the 3D or other enhancements but god damn if it wasn't beautiful. I can only hope that StarFox3D gets the same amount of love. Oh and I concur with the amount of Touch/Stylus required. Ocarina3D required little-to-zero touch-screen input, everything was mapped intuitively to the buttons and the Gyroscope use was very well executed, as well!
TL;DR: Make every 3DS game like Ocarina3D and you can have all my moneys!
"At least they're not like Kotaku, who desperately peddle their hatred of the 3DS's 3D, backed up by random Japanese celebrities that only they know for dubious reasons."
Japanese celebrity as in bloggers? Hell, even you and me are more famous than them mate in the whole global scale of things! :) (or at least on "life-relevance", we aren't oxygen-thieves like those guys!)
@Rammstein
Your right, I only a few times turned the 3D off but when you see it off the anti-aliasing kicks in more, so everything is alot "smoothed out"...then of course the frame-rate was really nice on Ocarnia3D.
@Dale
Don't worry about playing with the 3D off. Your just getting old, nothing to be ashamed about...
"TL;DR: Make every 3DS game like Ocarina3D and you can have all my moneys!"
Quoted for truth. The Wii, a full console, gets a Virtual Console release after years, which is a direct port; but a little ol' handheld can get a basically re-designed from the ground up classic within a few months.
Yeah totally got everything the dude was saying. Something about Starfox right?
Hopefully it's still gonna be called Starfox over here as Lylat Wars was a pretty silly sounding name. But yeah should still be fun.
Man, when are they finally going to remake this game with RUMBLE? Star Fox 64 was the first game I ever played with a rumble pack, and I just can't bring myself to buy a version that still doesn't have rumble... please Nintendo, can I have a version of Star Fox 64 with rumble please?! Please?
I an not a fan of the 3D. Having posted with it for about two hours on two occasions, I find it difficult to focus from the background to the foreground, and worse yet is how I constantly have to maintain the alignment of the screen so that I don't see a line splitting the image down in two.
I'm not thrilled that the definitive versions of the best games of yester year are coming to a gimmick-based hand held. Considering that I've played HD versions of Ocarina on my PC with texture packs and emulators, I'm not too disappointed.
Y = shoot, B = brake, X = Boost, A = Bomb
If that control scheme is set then it won't be too bad.
The Virtual console version had the most horrible classic controller setup ever.
Made it almost unplayable and they never updated it or anything.
Course that's why we have gamecube controllers.
Needs Online play badly.
Include the two SNES games as extras and it would make more sense as a new full priced title. (Yes I said two as in the unreleased sequel. That crap was amazing)
If you are a gaming vet there's really little reason to buy this game again with some enhanced graphics and gimmicky broken controls (thank goodness its optional)
As much as those explosions do look kinda nice.
As much as I love the classics I can get really tired of remakes instead of remaking every n64 game known to man why doesn't nintendo just start from scratch and create a new epic zelda game just for the 3DS?
@Wally
Honestly, I have yet to have a problem playing Ocarina with the slider all the way up. Can't wait to get RE: Mercs 3D and do the same! I've heard everyone has different reactions to the 3D effects of the 3DS. Don't worry about it, it's just science.
@Artemus: I initially had the slider all the way up, but I found a better spot in the middle. When I have the 3D maxed out, I can sometimes notice images kinda fading/expanding further than they should. The middle seems easier on the eyes for me. I love the 3D graphics, but I have to turn it off time to time since the slightest movement horizontally throws it away.
@Wally
I agree. Moving the system does screw up the 3D effect, which is one thing that totally sucks about the 3DS. Once you get used to the 3D effect and finding the sweet spot, the effect is truly amazing. =)

FEEEST BAMP FOR MANLY MEN!

I don't think they're going to fix that.
As long as alternate control schemes aren't forced (hello Phantom Hourglass you dirty bastard) I generally find them okay.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't use it, but it doesn't seem like it would have been hard to include.
It may just be that my eyes have difficulty seeing that degree of 3-D though.

2) I'd rather they keep starfox command's touchscreen controls. Gyro controls suck
